Souths make call on Blues superstar as key returns near
Latrell Mitchell will back up from State of Origin for South Sydney, with the superstar fullback a confirmed starter against the Warriors. Mitchell trained freely with Rabbitohs teammates on Saturday morning, just 60 hours after featuring in NSW's series-opening win at Suncorp Stadium. The Souths No.1 had always been keen to play straight away for the Bunnies, after flying home before the rest of the Blues on Thursday morning. But the 27-year-old's injury-affected start to 2025 had left some questions over whether he would be able to back up against the second-placed Warriors. Confirmed starter for tomorrow's clash against the Warriors ✅❤️💚MATCH PREVIEW: — South Sydney Rabbitohs 🐰 (@SSFCRABBITOHS) May 31, 2025 "He didn't have any injuries," Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett said. "It's always good to have him back and playing for us. It brings a lot of confidence to everybody." Mitchell's availability is timely for a Souths side that has been the most injury-ravaged in the competition over the opening half of the season. Cody Walker and Jack Wighton are both set to return next week against Canberra, but will not recover from injuries in time to face the Warriors. Hooker Peter Mamouzelos is also still out, while mid-season recruit at dummy-half Brandon Smith is at least a month away from his ACL rupture comeback. Lock Cameron Murray is still aiming to return from an achilles injury before the end of the season, despite suffering a setback in his recovery in April. But still, Bennett can see the silver lining in South Sydney's predicament. "This week's the first time all season we've been able to pick the same team two weeks in a row," Bennett said. "That's a plus for us. It's looking a lot more healthy for everybody." Despite the injury hits, the Rabbitohs still entered round 13 in sixth spot and appear to have returned to form after losing four straight in April and May. Sunday will mark Bennett's 950th club match in in charge since joining Canberra in 1987, but this year already looms as one of the veteran coach's greatest feats. The Rabbitohs ran 16th last season, finishing only one win clear of wooden-spooners Wests Tigers before Bennett's second stint at Redfern. "They've been so consistent at not beating themselves," Warriors coach Andrew Webster said. "They are going really well. Wayne Bennett's teams don't beat themselves. High on completions, work hard, play the full 80 and we'll have to be on our toes. "It's a good challenge."

Board removes Unicoi Co. Animal Shelter leadership
UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Unicoi County Animal Welfare Board voted on Thursday night to remove the county's animal shelter director. In a 5-2 vote, the board chose to remove shelter director Cody Walker and animal control officer and assistant director Pam Harris from their positions. Walker and Harris were not in attendance at the meeting. With penny blank supplier in Greene Co., leaders respond to treasury halt During a meeting, board members described conditions at the shelter, which was heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene, as 'deplorable.' Board members said the conditions at the shelter were still poor despite spending $72,000 for repairs and cleanup fees. So far in 2025, board members said 102 calls to animal control services have been made, and 42 of those calls went unanswered. The board also referenced a May 13 incident in which a child was bitten by a dog and animal control provided no response. Allegations of numerous dogs being at large in the county were also made prior to the vote. This is a developing story. More details will be added to the story through the evening. Bennett takes Souths into top eight with miracle run
Wayne Bennett's magic dust has worked more wonders on South Sydney, with the injury-ravaged Rabbitohs entering the top eight with a 22-12 win over Wests Tigers. Smashed by injuries since February and still missing three of their biggest names, the Rabbitohs went to a 12-0 lead early on Sunday before holding onto win. The victory did not come easily, with the Tigers appearing to level the scores at 16-16 with five minutes to play when Lachlan Galvin went over on the left edge. But replays showed the departing Tiger dropped the ball as he dived over the line, before Jai Arrow crossed late to seal the win for the Rabbitohs. A desperate tackle from Campbell Graham in the dying minutes sees South Sydney secure the 2 points! 🫣#NRLTigersSouths Telstra moment of the match. — NRL (@NRL) May 18, 2025 Bennett is renowned as one the greatest coaches in rugby league history, but if he is to keep this Souths side in the top eight it would be among his best feats. The Rabbitohs finished 16th last year and were only saved from collecting the spoon by a woeful Wests Tigers. They have then spent the first 11 rounds of 2025 without Cameron Murray, while Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker have headlined big names to spend time out. Even on Sunday night at Campbelltown they were still without first-choice five-eighth Walker, centre Jack Wighton and hooker Peter Mamouzelos. But still, they were clearly the better side, with Keaon Koloamatangi a man mountain in the middle of the field with 329 metres at prop. Siliva Havili got the Rabbitohs' first when he burrowed over out of dummy-half, before Jayden Sullivan laid on their next. Effectively on loan from the Tigers and set to return there next year, Sullivan spotted a gap behind the ruck and went 60 metres before Euan Aitken finished the job. In contrast, the Tigers failed to capitalise on their best chances with Apisai Koroisau playing a lone hand. On the same night he was again overlooked by NSW for Reece Robson, Koroisau almost single-handedly dragged the Tigers back into the match. He scored their first when he spotted a gap from his own 30-metre line and broke down field, The hooker got one-on-one with Latrell Mitchell, feigned a kick, dummied and stepped past the fullback to score while leaving the Souths No.1 falling to the ground. At 16-6 down Koroisau then got Souths down to 12 men when he burst into a gap from a Terrell May offload and forced a professional foul from Tallis Duncan. The hooker then made immediate use of the extra man, dummying out of the ruck on the next set and stepping through the defence to score. But any hope of a Tigers comeback were dimmed by Galvin's error over the line, before Arrow officially killed them off to leave the joint-venture stuck in 10th spot. May also had a big game for the Tigers with another 199 metres from 19 runs, but it will not be enough to win his way into the NSW team.

South Sydney hooker Peter Mamouzelos in agony after last-minute elbow dislocation
South Sydney's horrific injury woes have continued after going down to Newcastle on Saturday without four halves options. The Rabbitohs were missing Cody Walker, Jamie Humphreys, Jack Wighton and Latrell Mitchell among others — and now they look set to lose their best player Jye Gray and hooker Peter Mamouzelos. Gray left the field with what a hamstring problem in the 58th minute, but he later shared a more positive outlook. 'Obviously a bit painful,' he told the ABC. 'I hit it last week in Melbourne, unfortunately got hit in the same spot again there. Hopefully nothing bad, I think it's just a cork.' Mamouzelos dislocated his right elbow with just one minute to go in the match but the agonising situation continued well beyond the siren. Club doctors had struggled to resolve the most immediate concern even by the time Souths coach Wayne Bennett sat down for his post-match press conference. 'He can't get it back in right now so he's in a fair bit of pain actually,' Bennett said. Mitchell is due to return to face the Broncos next week but the Bunnies will still be under-manned. And Bennett, speaking after their fourth loss in a row, insisted injuries cannot be blamed for poor performance. 'We use it as an excuse and we are not going to get any better or improve ourselves,' Bennett said. 'We just have to live with that. We can do better than we did today. 'It's the NRL. No-one is going to give you compensation for that. I don't want our players to use it as an excuse. 'They all get well paid and they all think they want to be first graders. They have got to play like first graders, it is as simple as that. 'It's a concern. How do I fix your attitude? I can't. It's personal. They have got to fix it, of course they have. They have got to own it first.' Super League recruit Lewis Dodd made his first start but the Englishman's kicking game was ineffectual, as was Jayden Sullivan's. 'Not very good,' Bennett said, when asked for an assessment of his team's display. 'The start was poor, 18 points down pretty early, and after that we weren't too bad.' Despite his criticism of the team, Bennett said Rabbitohs fans could take heart from the grit in the squad. 'At 18-0 we could have been beaten by 50-odd,' he said. 'They have got a team that won't give up. We have been in the situation two or three times the last month when we could have been beaten by 50 or 60 points. They will hang in and keep fighting back.'
