More than 10 tonnes of plastic waste removed from Vellingiri hills
More than 10 tonnes of plastic waste, mainly packaged drinking water bottles and polythene bags, have been removed from Vellingiri hills as the four-month pilgrimage season for this year ended on May 31. According to the Forest Department, 10,905 kg of plastic waste collected at the downhill at Poondi have been shifted by Coimbatore-based Recompose Recycling Private Limited for recycling and making of value-added products. The company will recycle drinking bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Multi-layered plastics (MLP) such as biscuit covers and chocolate wrappers that are hard to be recycled will be turned into value-added products such as roofing sheets, covering sheets and paver blocks. Officials with the Department said the pilgrims were permitted to carry drinking water bottles to the hills after paying a refundable fee of ₹20 a bottle at the entry point on the premises of Vellingiri Andavar temple at Poondi. The bottles were collected from pilgrims when they returned after completing the 6.5 km-long trek (one side). 'Though majority of the pilgrims brought back the bottles and collected the refund, littering of bottles and other plastic waste has been noticed along the trekking route. Special drives will be conducted to collect those wastes and bring them to the downhill,' said an official.

Former MD of Coimbatore-based education company booked for forgery, cheating
The Coimbatore District Crime Branch (DCB) has registered a case against the former managing director of Coimbatore-based Indian Public Schools Private Limited (IPSPL), Ashok Kumar, for forgery and cheating. Mr. Kumar has been booked for offences under Sections 336 (3) (use of forged document or electronic record for the purpose of cheating), 340 (2) (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine) and 316 (2) (punishment for criminal breach of trust) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The DCB registered the FIR on May 23 based on a complaint from Sivashankaran Pattanam Singaram, one of the Directors of IPSPL. Mr. Singaram, in his complaint, claimed that IPSPL founded in 2006 has its 80.25 % share owned by Nuevo Agora Centro de Estudios SL, 19.75 % by Mr. Kumar and 0.000054% by Socrates School SL. The complaint stated that Mr. Kumar, who was the MD from 2006, was removed from the post on March 24 this year for working against the company and causing loss. All the administrative authorities held by Mr. Kumar were given to Mr. Singaram and one Jayaram Balakrishnan, it said. After the new administration took charge of the firm, it was found that Mr. Kumar availed loans from a private bank and a non-banking financial company in the name of the firm for the purchase of 45 buses, by charging over the actual price of the vehicles with an intent to gain undue profit. A forged board resolution extract was used for the loans. The forged document stated that an approval for the loans had been made in a directors' meeting held on February 28, 2025, whereas no such meeting was held on the date, it alleged. The DCB is investigating the charges against Mr. Kumar.

Elgi Aims to be Top 3 Air Compressor Manufacturers Driven by Broad-Based Growth
Its consolidated revenue from operations for the March quarter was up 14.7 per cent to INR 993 crore as against INR 866 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. Elgi Equipments aims to be among the top three global air compressor manufacturers by revenue driven by broad-based growth in its key markets. Currently, it is the sixth largest air compressor supplier globally. "India and Europe were very strong, Australia and North America was kind of flat, but Middle East, Africa, India all of them did well. So, that's the top line story. Bottom line was by and large consistent with the top line growth," said Jairam Varadaraj, Managing Director, Elgi. With an estimated market share of around 20 per cent, Coimbatore-based Elgi Equipments is the second largest manufacturer of compressors in India. Its product profile includes portable, reciprocating and screw compressors, sold under the Elgi brand, through channel partners. "We have been for a long period of time in India…we have on average five times more machines installed than in the rest of the world. So, as a consequence, our aftermarket revenue is close to 27-28 per cent of our total revenue, whereas when you take globally, it is only about 12-13 per cent. So, the global markets are in the nascent stage of growing the aftermarket, but once the installed base gets established in these markets, then profitability will follow," said Varadaraj. "So, overall, I think we are on the right track, growing well." Elgi Foundry In a significant leap forward for industrial air compression, earlier this year, Elgi Equipments announced the introduction of its pioneering compressed air stabilization technology, aimed at addressing the challenges of unstable compressor performance, inefficiency, and excessive wear caused by frequent load/unload cycles. In industrial settings, the gap between compressor capacity and plant air demand is inherently dynamic. This variability leads to frequent cut-in and cut-out operations, which destabilize the compressor and impair critical flow and kinematic components. Traditional solutions, such as increasing reservoir volume, altering cut-in/cut-out pressures, or adding variable frequency drives (VFDs), often fall short, introducing new inefficiencies or higher operational costs. The global air compressor market size was valued at approximately USD 26.57 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 34.10 billion by 2030, according to a report from Grand View Research. This represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.7 per cent from 2024 to 2030. Elgi, a publicly listed firm, reported a net profit of INR 102 crore for the fourth quarter ended March, up 34.2 per cent compared to INR 76 crore in the same quarter last year. Consolidated revenue from operations for the March quarter was up 14.7 per cent to INR 993 crore as against INR 866 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. For the full fiscal year, consolidated PAT was down 12.2 per cent to INR 350 crore compared to INR 312 crore in FY24 due to a one-time expense. For the full year, the company's revenue grew 9 per cent to INR 3,510 crore as against INR 3,218 crore in the previous year. "India and Middle East continue to drive sustainable growth. The European and Brazilian business continued the growth momentum. The Australian business saw a return to growth, while the South East Asia remained subdued. The industrials and medical businesses performed well in USA. The automotive business continues to grow, aided by growing domestic demand and through forging strategic partnerships," the company said in a statement during the earnings. On the impact of the US reciprocal tariffs, Elgi said it has "devised certain mitigation measures to overcome the impact of US tariffs, which is expected to be minimized further once a trade agreement is signed at a country-to-country level."

Coimbatore man treks Velliangiri Hill for 102 days to raise awareness against alcohol, drug use
COIMBATORE: In a bid to raise awareness against the use of alcohol and drugs and promote a healthy lifestyle, a 39-year-old Coimbatore-based man has trekked Velliangiri Hill continuously for a record 102 days as on Sunday. B Hari Kumar, a fitness coach, has been climbing the hill since February 1. The Velliangiri stretch consists of seven hills and reaches an altitude of 1,778 metres from the sea level. It is a 5.5 km stretch from the foothills, and there is a temple of Lord Velliangiri Aandavar on the seventh hill. Even though the temple is under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) department, the trekking route comes under the forest department's purview as it is in the reserve forest area. Every year, the trekking route is open for the public from February 1 to May 31, and the trek takes roughly six-seven hours for an average person to complete. However, Hari Kumar completes the trek in two-and-a-half hours. Hari Kumar told TNIE, "Earlier in the season, I trekked for 26 days continuously on the hill. To make an attempt to complete 108 days continuously, I started trekking on February 1. I made the attempt to show the importance of fitness. Every day, I start trekking around 9.30 am and reach the top of the seventh hill, at 6,200 feet, in one-and-a-half hours and return down in 50 - 55 minutes. I complete the trek by 12.30 pm." "As I am a fitness coach, it makes it easier to trek the hill within two-and-a-half hours. My friends admire the speed at which I trek the hill. To create a record, I decided to trek 108 days in the season. So far, I have completed 102 days as on May 25," he said. He said that the motive is to be fit and healthy, and without drugs and alcohol.
