The Coin Collecting Wizard on TikTok gave people an insight into what makes this penny so valuable. "This is the 1933 pre-decimal penny from the United Kingdom, so make sure you check your grandad's old coin collection and keep an eye out for this date," he said in a new TikTok, referring to the year 1933. "Do you have this coin from 1933. If so, you are rich?" He said that while "there are other dates to look out for too," of rare coins, none are "going to have the crazy value of the 1933 penny," and the reason for that is because there are only seven are known to exist. The reason there were so few is because this penny was not intended for general circulation. Instead, it was struck for ceremonial purposes, such as being placed under the foundation stones of important buildings. "So, if you find one, you are extremely lucky, but that doesn't necessarily mean there are no other dates to look for because there is," the Coin Collecting Wizard continued. Coin Collecting Wizard often posts about interesting coin facts on TikTok and in one video ran through the most valuable pennies. Speaking in the video, he urged viewers to "stop what you're doing and listen". Exact dates to spot on the 10 rarest 1p coins worth up to £200k He said: "Did you know there are old pennies worth thousands of pounds?" In some cases, the extremely rare 1p pieces have sold for a whopping £200,000. Bear in mind though, that you might not always get such a hefty amount for a rare coin. The design of the coin, its condition and whether or not the coin is in circulation also affects how much it could be worth. How to spot valuable items COMMENTS by Consumer Editor, Alice Grahns: It's easy to check if items in your attic are valuable. As a first step, go on eBay to check what other similar pieces, if not the same, have sold for recently. Simply search for your item, filter by 'sold listings' and toggle by the highest value. This will give you an idea of how much others are willing to pay for it. The method can be used for everything ranging from rare coins and notes to stamps, old toys, books and vinyl records - just to mention a few examples. For coins, online tools from change experts like Coin Hunter are also helpful to see how much it could be worth. Plus, you can refer to Change Checker's latest scarcity index update to see which coins are topping the charts. For especially valuable items, you may want to enlist the help of experts or auction houses. Do your research first though and be aware of any fees for evaluating your stuff. As a rule of thumb, rarity and condition are key factors in determining the value of any item. You're never guaranteed to make a mint, however. You can easily figure out how rare a coin is, by checking its mintage figures. This relates to how many coins were produced by The Royal Mint. If a coin has a low mintage, it means there's less in circulation and is therefore rarer and it could potentially be worth more than its face value. Either way, you'll want to keep an eye out for some in particular which can sell for big numbers. Plus sometimes specific details can determine how much the penny will sell for - such as if it has an error. 4 There are plenty of rare coins out there, you just have to know what you're looking for Credit: TikTok/@coincollectingwizard

Rare 20p coin worth more than 300 times its value as people told to check spare change

The coin, produced in 2008, is now said to be worth around £60 due to a so-called 'mule error' that meant it 'slipped into' circulation without anyone noticing. A coin expert has advised Brits to 'stop spending' their 20p coins. Instead, they have been advised to check for a rare error that could make them worth more than 300 times their face value. The coin, minted in 2008, is now believed to be worth around £60 due to a so-called 'mule error' that allowed it to enter circulation unnoticed. Although these coins are considered 'rare', they're not 'impossible to find'. ‌ Thousands were produced with the mistake that collectors highly prize. On TikTok, the coin expert, Coin Collecting Wizard, warned: "Stop spending your 20p coins without checking them first because one from 2008 with no date is worth £60." ‌ Usually, the date of a 2008 20p coin can be found on the reverse, often referred to as tails, side of the coin, reports the Manchester Evening News. He further explained: "Normally, the date on a 20p is on the reverse right under the crown. But in 2008, something strange happened. A small number of 20ps were minted with a new obverse - the shield side paired with the old reverse Tudor rose but neither side has a date." "This is what we call a mule error. When mismatched dies are used and this one slipped into circulation without anyone noticing," he added. The 'rare' 20p coins will feature the shield design on the reverse, but no date. He continued: "Normally, 20p coins have the date on the back, but if you check and there's no date on either side, you might be holding the rare one. "These undated 20ps are rare but not impossible to find in average condition. They go for £60 plus. People are still finding them in their change even 15 years later." ‌ The Royal Mint clarified on its website: "In November 2008, a number of 20p coins were incorrectly minted, resulting in the coins being undated. "This problem affected less than 250,000 coins of the 136 million 20p pieces minted in 2008-09 and was due to the previous obverse (the 'heads' side) being used with the new reverse (the 'tails' side) design, meaning the year of issue did not feature at all. ‌ "These coins remain legal tender and still have a face value of 20p." Collectors continue to search high and low for these sought-after 2008 misprints, with several undated 20p coins fetching between £50 to £100 on eBay.

Brits urged to check their 20p coins now

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A numismatics specialist has urged the British public to pause before spending their 20p pieces and inspect them for a unique error that could make them worth over 300 times their original value. The specific coin in question, minted back in 2008, has become quite the collector's item, now valued at around £60 due to a 'mule error' which led to its unnoticed release into general circulation. Despite being rare, these coins are not impossible to come across, as several thousand were produced with this sought-after mistake. The coin connoisseur, known on TikTok as Coin Collecting Wizard, advised: "Stop spending your 20p coins without checking them first because one from 2008 with no date is worth £60." Ordinarily, the date on a 2008 20p coin would be located on the reverse side, also referred to as tails. However, in 2008, an unusual occurrence took place where a limited batch of 20ps were struck using a new obverse design – the shield side – combined with an old reverse Tudor rose design, resulting in neither side featuring a date. This phenomenon is known as a mule error, occurring when mismatched dies are used, and this particular error managed to enter circulation undetected, reports the Manchester Evening News. These scarce 20p coins will display the shield motif on the reverse but will lack a date. He concluded: "Normally, 20p coins have the date on the back, but if you check and there's no date on either side, you might be holding the rare one. "These undated 20ps are rare but not impossible to find in average condition. They go for £60 plus. People are still finding them in their change even 15 years later." "These coins remain legal tender and still have a face value of 20p." At present, several of these 2008 misprinted 20p coins have been sold on eBay, with prices ranging from £50 to £100.

Rare UK banknotes linked Jane Austen could be worth money

Highly sought-after new banknotes could be worth 'hundreds to thousands of pounds' in your wallet right now - if they have this unique feature. Some new King Charles III banknotes that are now circulating across the UK could hold more than their face value, according to experts. Certain rare serial numbers can make them highly sought-after by collectors – including those associated with one notable author. How do I tell if my banknote is worth money? Serial numbers representing significant dates, like 16 121775 – Jane Austen's birth or 18 071817 (her death), can be valuable, advises CoinCollectingWizard. The Bank of England began issuing banknotes featuring King Charles III's portrait on June 5, 2024 to co-circulate with Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Bank notes featuring Jane Austen were first issued in 2016 by the Bank of England, on the 200th anniversary of her death. One that featured a quotation from her most celebrated novel Pride and Prejudice, sold for £3,600 on eBay in September 2017. predicts that the following serial numbers could also be worth thousands linked to the esteemed author: Serial numbers 16 121775 and 18 071817 as they represent Austen's date of birth and death Serial number 17 751817 as it's her birth and death combined Serial number 28 011813 as it's the date when her most celebrated novel, Pride and Prejudice, was first published Serial numbers JA01 and JA75 (Jane Austen's birth year) and JA17 (the year of Jane Austen's death) may be popular too. How to check if a UK bank note is rare? CoinCollectingWizard states to check the prefix (e.g. CA01 for £5, HB01 for £10, EH01 for £20, AJ01 for £50) and the serial number. The lower the serial number, the more valuable the note could be. They also advise to keep an eye out for sequential numbers or patterns, as they're often prized by collectors. 'Not every new note is rare, but with a keen eye and some knowledge, you might just spot a hidden gem in your wallet.' What are the rare serial numbers on money in the UK? • Prefix + 000001: The very first notes printed, like HB01 000002, have fetched up to £17,000 at auction. • Low serial numbers such as 000003, 000063, and 000072 have sold for hundreds to thousands of pounds, CoinCollectingWizard advises. Last year, rare King Charles bank notes began selling on eBay for thousands of pounds.
