Highly sought-after new banknotes could be worth 'hundreds to thousands of pounds' in your wallet right now - if they have this unique feature.
Some new King Charles III banknotes that are now circulating across the UK could hold more than their face value, according to experts.
Certain rare serial numbers can make them highly sought-after by collectors – including those associated with one notable author.
How do I tell if my banknote is worth money?
Serial numbers representing significant dates, like 16 121775 – Jane Austen's birth or 18 071817 (her death), can be valuable, advises CoinCollectingWizard.
The Bank of England began issuing banknotes featuring King Charles III's portrait on June 5, 2024 to co-circulate with Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
Bank notes featuring Jane Austen were first issued in 2016 by the Bank of England, on the 200th anniversary of her death.
One that featured a quotation from her most celebrated novel Pride and Prejudice, sold for £3,600 on eBay in September 2017.
ChangerChecker.com predicts that the following serial numbers could also be worth thousands linked to the esteemed author:
Serial numbers 16 121775 and 18 071817 as they represent Austen's date of birth and death
Serial number 17 751817 as it's her birth and death combined
Serial number 28 011813 as it's the date when her most celebrated novel, Pride and Prejudice, was first published
Serial numbers JA01 and JA75 (Jane Austen's birth year) and JA17 (the year of Jane Austen's death) may be popular too.
How to check if a UK bank note is rare?
CoinCollectingWizard states to check the prefix (e.g. CA01 for £5, HB01 for £10, EH01 for £20, AJ01 for £50) and the serial number.
The lower the serial number, the more valuable the note could be.
They also advise to keep an eye out for sequential numbers or patterns, as they're often prized by collectors.
'Not every new note is rare, but with a keen eye and some knowledge, you might just spot a hidden gem in your wallet.'
What are the rare serial numbers on money in the UK?
• Prefix + 000001: The very first notes printed, like HB01 000002, have fetched up to £17,000 at auction.
• Low serial numbers such as 000003, 000063, and 000072 have sold for hundreds to thousands of pounds, CoinCollectingWizard advises.

In recent months, one was sold on eBay for £11.95 on June 18. Football Of all the coins created to commemorate the 2012 Olympic Games, the 50p Football is among the rarest. It features an explanation of the controversial offside rule on it, with 1,125,000 produced. One sold for £20 on eBay on June 11, although it has been known to go for as much as £75 in the past. Kew Gardens The Kew Gardens 50p is the rarest of all the 50p pieces, with only 210,000 in circulation. They have been known to sell for as much as £895 on eBay before. The design was created by Christopher Le Brun RA and features the famous Chinese Pagoda with a leafy chamber that twists around the tower. The coin often sparks the interest of new coin collectors due to its rarity. The highest sale we found in recent weeks was £142 on June 22 with 23 bids.
