Ranked: the GREATEST fast food chicken sandwiches of all time
There's just something about fast food chicken sandwiches that gets people excited. Some have proven so popular they have their own fan pages – and devotees have campaigned to bring discontinued and limited-edition items back for good. The 2019 launch of Popeyes' fried chicken sandwich sparked what became known as the 'chicken sandwich wars', with each fast food chain battling to serve the best. To settle the debate once and for all, we've ranked the top fast food chicken sandwiches through the years, counting down to the best of all. Read on to discover the greatest fast food chicken sandwiches of all time. We've based our ranking on the enduring popularity of each sandwich in its place of origin and beyond, and on the opinions of our well-travelled (and well-fed) team. The list is unavoidably subjective. In March 2025, Chick-fil-A announced the return of its popular Smokehouse BBQ Bacon Sandwich. The original sandwich featured the chain's famously crispy chicken topped with candied bacon, Colby Jack cheese, lettuce and BBQ sauce. But in a new twist, fans could also order the colossal sandwich with a spicy chicken fillet or a grilled fillet instead of the classic. Which one would you choose? If you're going to put the words 'chicken fingers' in your brand name, you'd better make sure your chicken fingers live up to the hype. Fortunately, Raising Cane's has got this fast food staple locked down. So, the natural next step? Putting them in a tasty chicken sandwich. The version at Raising Cane's brings together everything you love about the chain: three crispy chicken fingers, Cane's signature sauce, crisp lettuce and a perfectly toasted bun. It's simple, satisfying and seriously delicious. In celebration of Halloween 2024, Popeyes introduced a limited-edition Ghost Pepper Chicken Sandwich at the beginning of October. The sandwich featured the chain's classic Louisiana-inspired crispy chicken fillet topped with pickles and a chilli-infused ghost pepper sauce, all in a brioche bun. It went down a storm with fans, who said it had the perfect amount of slow-burning heat without being too spicy to handle. This Canadian chain may be better known for its coffee and legendary Timbits, but Tim Hortons serves up a pretty good chicken sandwich too. Tims Crispy Chicken Stack is a customer favourite, featuring a crispy chicken fillet, lettuce, cheese, a hash brown and regular and smoky tomato mayo, all packed inside a toasted brioche bun. If that's not enough, you can take it up a notch by adding different toppings. The McChicken Sandwich originally launched in 1980 and met with a rather lukewarm reception; Chicken McNuggets, released a year later, proved much more popular. However, its relaunch in 1988 was far more successful. Served in a soft seeded bun, the fillet of crispy chicken topped with lettuce and 'sandwich sauce' has been a classic menu choice ever since. Launched in 2021, the Sonic Chicken Slinger has become a staple menu item at popular US drive-thru chain Sonic. A crispy chicken fillet with lettuce, pickles and mayo served up in a brioche bun, the Slinger is simple but packed full of flavour. It also has a reputation as one of the healthier chicken burgers on the market. The McCrispy became the first permanent chicken sandwich addition to McDonald's menu in 15 years when it appeared in October 2022, landing in various markets including the US, UK and Canada. It consists of a crunchy chicken breast fillet, marinated in black pepper and cayenne, served in an artisan sourdough bun with iceberg lettuce and black pepper mayo. The sandwich, which replaced the much-loved Chicken Legend, launched with plenty of fanfare but received mixed reviews on social media. Burger King became the first major fast food chain to launch a grilled chicken sandwich in 1990 – six months before Wendy's and four years before McDonald's. Known as the BK Broiler in the States, it was one of the most successful fast food launches ever, although it was discontinued in most markets in 2019 after several recipe and name changes. It consisted of flame-grilled chicken, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo (or honey mustard sauce), all served in a sesame bun. In June 2024, BK started rolling out flame-grilled chicken sandwiches in select US markets. In early 2024, McDonald's launched its first UK collaboration with Frank's RedHot, taking its already fiery McSpicy chicken burger up another heat level. Featuring Frank's RedHot mayo, a crispy, crunchy, nicely spicy piece of chicken breast, salad, melty Emmental cheese, jalapeños and onions in a sesame seed bun, it was a limited-edition item that only remained on sale for as long as the chain had stock. Popular South African chain Chicken Licken is the largest fried chicken chain in the world that didn't originate in the US, so it makes sense that it serves a seriously delicious chicken sandwich. The Love Me Tender features a thin, crispy chicken fillet, lettuce, tomato and the chain's signature Dreamy Creamy sauce on a toasted sesame bun. This Korean-style chicken sandwich, first served in South Korean branches of Shake Shack, launched as a limited-edition item in the US in 2021. Following huge success, it then appeared in UK branches before arriving in Hong Kong in 2022 – and finally returning to the US in January 2024. It featured a crispy fried chicken breast glazed with gochujang, topped with toasted sesame seeds and slathered in a white kimchi slaw. It remains to be seen whether the much-loved sandwich will make a return to menus. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich – a herb-marinated grilled chicken breast topped with mayo, crisp lettuce and tomato, served in a warm, toasted bun – launched at Wendy's in 1990 and quickly became a popular menu item. A healthier alternative to a fried chicken burger, it was a surprise in April 2024 when Wendy's removed it from its US menu, replacing it with the Grilled Chicken Ranch Wrap. There are already petitions to bring it back, although it's still available in the UK. Harvey's has been serving fast food delights since 1959 and continues to be one of Canada's most popular chains. This place seriously delivers on flavour-packed menu items, including its Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Slotted in a multi-grain or white bun, it features a Canadian chicken breast that's coated in a signature blend of spices and tossed in Harvey's spicy Buffalo sauce – and it comes with the customer's choice of toppings, from onions and pickles to black olives and hot peppers. Cult favourite Shake Shack may be known for its decadent shakes and its menu of tasty hamburgers and crispy fries, but the Chicken Shack Burger certainly shouldn't be overlooked. The only poultry burger on the permanent menu, it combines a chunky, crispy chicken breast with buttermilk herb mayo, lettuce and pickles, and it comes in a toasted potato bun. A small chain originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Hattie B's has a well-established reputation for serving up incredible plates of chicken (as well as tasty sides), and its hot chicken sandwich is seriously popular too. You can choose your heat level, from mild Southern style to 'shut the cluck up' (translation: extremely hot), and opt for a grilled or fried chicken breast, plus American or pimento cheese. All chicken and no bun, the Double Down left fans in a frenzy in March 2023 when rumours suggested it was returning to the UK after a five-year hiatus. Sadly for Brits, it actually reappeared on US menus for a limited time instead – and only reappeared in the UK in February 2025. Originally launched in 2010, the Double Down sandwiches bacon, cheese and BBQ sauce between two pieces of crispy fried chicken. According to the chain, it generated 'more buzz than any test market item in KFC history'. It might be stretching the definition of 'fast food' to include Applebee's here, but the chicken sandwich put out by the chain in November 2024 is certainly worthy of inclusion. The limited-edition Big Cluckin' Chicken Sandwich was a towering combination of crispy hand-breaded chicken breast, all the classic accompaniments and a toasted brioche bun. It was also part of Applebee's thrifty Really Big Meal Deal promotion, so it was a bit of a bargain, too. Cult American burger joint Jack in the Box has the highest search volume of any US fast food chain not already in the UK, with Brits desperate to try one of its iconic sandwiches. Jack in the Box joined the so-called chicken sandwich wars in December 2020 with the launch of its Cluck Sandwich: a crispy chicken fillet slathered in the chain's Mystery Sauce, served in a brioche bun with pickle slices. Dave's Hot Chicken has come a long way since three friends launched a humble pop-up in a car park back in 2017. Now, with over 200 locations across the US and a growing presence in Canada, the UK and the Middle East, it's become a global sensation. The spotlight is firmly on its fiery hot chicken tenders, so it's no surprise that the sliders are a standout. The Tower Burger – a crispy Original Chicken fillet with lettuce, cheese, mayo and a hash brown – first launched in 1997, and it's been a top KFC menu choice since then. However, this beast of a chicken sandwich was discontinued in Australia in 2018, before briefly returning in 2021. Outraged Aussie Tower Burger fans then started up a 'Bring back the Tower Burger' Facebook page, and the much-loved burger made a return Down Under in June 2023, albeit for a limited time only. Apparently, it's the most requested burger in Australian KFC history. While Burger King may be known as the 'Home of the Whopper', its delicious Chicken Royale also has a loyal fan base. Known as the Original Chicken Sandwich, Long Chicken and BK Chicken in some countries, the sandwich features crispy chicken, creamy mayo and lettuce, all inside a toasted sesame seed bun. It may be a very simple sandwich, but it's one you can always rely on to be tasty. This Texas fast food chain hit the headlines in 2020 when, in a bid to emulate the success seen by Popeyes the year before, it launched the Big & Golden. To make the delicious creation, brine-marinated chicken breast is hand breaded, dipped in batter and deep fried. It's then slotted into one of Golden Chick's freshly baked buns, accompanied by the chain's signature sweet-savoury Lotta Zing sauce and five thinly sliced pickles. Adding to Popeyes' legendary range of chicken sandwiches, the chain announced it would be debuting a new item in May 2024 – and fans were excited. Available at select US locations, the Golden BBQ Chicken Sandwich comes complete with a buttermilk-battered chicken breast topped with sweet yet tangy Golden BBQ sauce, and it's served on a toasted and buttered brioche bun with barrel-cured pickles. It's already loaded with flavour, but diners can customise it by adding Havarti cheese and more. Bojangles might not be as big or as well-known as some of the other fast food chains on this list, but with over 800 locations across the US, it's certainly made its mark. The spot is well worth seeking out for a taste of Bo's Chicken Sandwich. The star of the show is a seriously juicy chicken breast, marinated in bold, flavour-packed spices and hand breaded in a buttermilk coating for that perfect crunch. Add two thick-cut dill pickles, a dollop of mayo and a toasted bun, and you've got something truly satisfying. Cult burger chain Fatburger first opened in California in 1947, and its popularity has grown ever since. It regularly hits the headlines with special-edition chicken burgers – one of which saw chicken sandwiched by waffles – but its classic chicken sandwich remains the most popular poultry item on the menu. It consists of a juicy chunk of grilled, crispy or spicy chicken breast in a spongy bread bun with lettuce, tomato and mayo. Another happy consequence of the chicken sandwich wars, Wendy's Classic Chicken sandwich launched in October 2020 – replacing its Homestyle Chicken sandwich, which had been on the menu for over a decade. The Classic Chicken features a premium crispy chicken fillet topped with mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles, and it's served in a toasted bun. Fans say it has the perfect blend of juiciness and crunch. This popular chain started life in Texas in 1952, serving chicken in various forms, and it now has locations across the US and in various other countries. Its chicken sandwich, which launched in 2020 following an ongoing campaign by Church's fans, is an item that remains enduringly popular. A honey-butter brioche bun is filled with a juicy, hand-breaded chicken fillet, three crispy pickles and either regular or spicy mayo. Filipino fast food chain Jollibee is so adored that people queued for seven hours when its flagship UK store opened in Leicester Square, London, in May 2021. Its chicken sandwich – a double hand-breaded crunchy breast fillet, lettuce and garlic mayo in a toasted brioche bun –launched in September 2021, and chicken burger fans say it's one of the best they've ever tasted. Zaxby's launched its Signature Sandwich to much fanfare in March 2021, with the advertising slogan: 'the chicken sandwich war ain't over yet'. With fans saying Zaxby's serves the juiciest, most flavour-packed chicken in the US, it's no surprise that the item was a big hit. The sandwich consists of a hand-breaded chicken fillet, pickles and Zax Sauce (or Spicy Zax Sauce), all stuffed into a split-top potato bun. The chain also recently introduced its Signature Club Sandwich. Wingstop sparked a social media frenzy when it launched its chicken sandwich, the Big Flavour Burger, in September 2022, with four weeks' supply of the sandwiches selling out in just six days. Available in any of the chain's ten signature flavours, from sweet and tangy Hawaiian to super-hot Atomic, it consists of crispy chicken tenders, crunchy slaw, pickles and house ranch, packed into a toasted brioche bun. Credited as starting the 'spicy chicken sandwich wars', the Spicy Fi'ed Chicken Sandwich first appeared in November 2020 in selected BurgerFi outlets, so fans regularly campaigned for it to join their local branch's menu. It featured chicken breast from Springer Mountain Farms, house-made hot pickles, fresh jalapeños, ghost pepper honey and spicy mayo. Not a spice fan? There was also a milder version with honey mustard sauce. British fast food lovers were outraged when McDonald's axed the Chicken Legend in October 2022 to make way for a slew of new menu items. A simple snack of crispy breaded chicken, lettuce and cool mayo in a toasted oat bun, the Legend had a huge fan base. There's now a petition to bring it back, with customers regularly taking to social media to lament its loss. Fans of this limited-edition burger were thrilled when it returned to McDonald's menus in the UK in April 2024 – but alas, it was gone again after just a short time. A twist on the ever-popular beef Big Mac, it consisted of two crispy chicken patties, a triple-decker bun, sliced cheese and Big Mac sauce. The Chicken Big Mac has also made an appearance in Canada, France and the United Arab Emirates, and it finally hit the US for a limited time in October 2024. The 'original and the best' according to KFC, the Fillet Burger consists of a chunky piece of Original Recipe 100% chicken breast, lettuce and mayo, all sitting pretty in a sesame seed bun. This one's a classic for a reason; die-hard KFC fans say you can't beat the Colonel's recipe for perfectly seasoned chicken. This simple burger is a mainstay of KFC menus worldwide. Launched in the USA in 2021, the Ch'King was only around for a year before it was axed from Burger King's menu and replaced with the Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich range. Despite its short life, dedicated fans took to social media to slam BK for getting rid of the 'greatest chicken sandwich of all time'. Two years in the making, the mammoth burger, which comprised hand-breaded chicken breast, pickles, signature sauce and a potato bun, was reportedly too time-consuming and costly to continue making. After proving a bestseller in 120 countries around the world, KFC's Zinger Burger launched in the USA in 2017. It was created in Trinidad and Tobago in 1984, and now Australia alone sells more than 22 million spicy Zingers each year. Consisting of a peppery, double hand-breaded crispy chicken fillet, a dash of spicy sauce and a handful of lettuce in a toasted sesame bun, the Zinger is also available as a Stacker (with two chicken fillets) and as a Tower Burger, with an added hash brown. The 2019 launch of Popeyes' signature fried chicken sandwich – which comprises 12-hour marinated fried chicken breast, fresh pickles and creamy mayo in a soft brioche bun – led to a 38% jump in same-store sales that year. Since then, the mania has continued, with the chain expanding into the UK. The opening of the Oxford store in 2022 saw queues forming at 5am, with around 2,000 chicken sandwiches sold in one day. When the chicken sandwich wars began, Chick-fil-A instantly took to social media to argue that its chicken burger was the original and the best. The recipe dates back to 1946 and remains a true classic: chicken breast is perfectly seasoned and breaded, pressure cooked in 100% peanut oil (to retain its juiciness) and served with dill pickle chips in a toasted, buttery bun. The Original Chicken Sandwich remains the bestseller in the US, having only briefly dropped to second place when Popeyes' chicken sandwich launched in 2019. To put its popularity into context, the sandwich accounts for a staggering 45% of all online chicken sandwich orders in the updated by Luke Paton.

Aldi recalls thousands of cheese pouches in 4 states over possible metal contamination
Aldi recalls thousands of cheese pouches in 4 states over possible metal contamination Show Caption Hide Caption Trader Joe's recalls sparking water Trader Joe's has recalled a brand of sparking water due to concerns that the glass containers may shatter. Fox - LA Nearly 5,000 pouches of shredded cheese sold at Aldi's stores in four states have been recalled after a possible metal contamination, health regulators warn. A voluntary recall says that 400 cases of Happy Farm's Colby Jack Deli Sliced Cheese may contain stainless steel fragments, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Each cases includes 12 pouches of cheese that hold 12 ounces. Exposure to the contaminants may cause temporary health risks with an unlikely chance of serious adverse health consequences, the FDA reports. The Aldi products blend shredded Colby and Monterey cheeses sold in flexible plastic stand-up pouches. Is my Aldi cheese recalled? The 400 cases of Happy Farms' Colby Jack cheese pouches were distributed across in Connecticut, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, the FDA reports. They include expiration dates of July 13 and 14, 2025 and a bar number of 4061463330840, according to the FDA.

The FDA Is Warning Shoppers About This Aldi Cheese Recalled From Ohio And 3 Other States
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently got involved with a voluntary Aldi cheese recall. In February, Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. initiated a recall of Aldi's Happy Farms Colby Jack cheese for the potential unintended presence of stainless steel fragments. But as of March 19, the recall was upgraded to the FDA's Class II categorization, indicating that exposure to the fragments carries little chance of "serious adverse health consequences," but may still "cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences," per the FDA website. The recall affects 12 oz., flexible plastic stand-up pouches of finely shredded Colby Jack cheese from Happy Farms by Aldi, with batch number 8679653 and item number 170374. The recalled cheese also has the UPC code 4061463330840, and best-by dates between July 13 and July 14, 2025. The potentially contaminated cheese was sold exclusively by Aldi in only four states: Connecticut, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Aldi customers who bought Happy Farms Colby Jack from outside one of these four states should be in the clear. Read more: Ranking 12 Grocery Store Hot Dogs From Worst To Best Stainless steel fragments like those that could potentially contaminate the affected cheese should not be eaten. When swallowed, even tiny pieces of stainless steel pose an injury risk from the second they enter your mouth, all the way through your digestive system. As the FDA indicated, severe injury is unlikely, which is why this has not reached a class I recall. Although small cuts in the esophagus from stainless steel fragments might not be considered "serious adverse health consequences," it's a painful and potentially bloody annoyance that's best avoided. If you have the recalled cheese at home, do not eat it. You can either return the cheese with proof of purchase to your local Aldi for a refund or simply throw away the cheese. Luckily, shoppers seeking a new bag of Happy Farms Colby Jack should be in the clear since this initial recall is weeks old and Aldi long ago removed any affected products from its shelves. Unfortunately for Aldi, this is not the only recent recall it's weathered. The grocer was the center of several listeria-related recalls at the end of 2024 -- one of which also targeted cheese. But the limited exposure of these affected products, and minimal risk of serious injury, should help keep it from joining the ranks of recalls that will forever haunt Aldi. Hungry for more? The Recalled Cheese Aldi Shoppers Need To Be Aware Of
Aldi shoppers, time to check your fridges, because a recall's been issued on one of its products. Happy Farms Colby Jack shredded cheese, which is Aldi's in-house brand of cheese, has been recalled due to the fact that stainless steel fragments have been found inside some bags. This is the blend of Colby and Monterey Jack cheeses. Fortunately, this is only of concern to those who live in four states: Connecticut, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. If you do live in one of those states and have purchased the Colby Jack blend from Aldi, you'll want to look for a batch number that reads "8679653," item number "170374," UPC "4061463330840," and lot numbers that are "Best By JUL 13 25 H or Best By JUL 14 25 H." 400 cases of the potentially affected product were sent to stores in those states, but current shoppers don't have anything to worry about, since the recall was actually issued on February 15 of this year. Any of those bags would already have been removed from store shelves. In the rare case you do have a package of it at home, you can return to Aldi for a replacement or you can simply toss it. Just don't eat it. Read more: What's The Best Canned Chili? We Tried 8 Popular Choices Aldi's last recall was for its Mama Cozzi's frozen chicken and cheese taquitos from earlier this year. These, too, had metal fragments in them and at least one person reported a dental injury from consuming the product. It's important to note that the manufacturer of the Colby Jack shredded cheese product isn't the same as the taquito one. The cheese was made by a company called Great Lakes Cheese Co., while the taquitos were made by a company called Bestway Sandwiches, Inc. Though modern food systems are highly controlled, sometimes things like this do slip through the cracks, so it's best to keep an eye on the news for product recalls now and again. While some only affect a small swath of the public, some can become large-scale issues, like the Boar's Head listeria outbreak that was linked to multiple deaths. Most of the time there's no reason to panic, but if you find something unusual in your packaged food, it's always best to report it using the contact information listed on the product.
