Savly heroics, bullpen dominance earn Royals walk-off series win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals are now in second place in the American League Central, surpassing the Cleveland Guardians with a walk-off series win against the Atlanta Braves. With just a single run being scored between both teams, the game was uneventful on the offensive side of the ball. However, fans got their money's worth quickly in the 10th inning when Salvador Perez drove in MJ Melendez to score the game-winning run. Deadline approaches for Royals stadium measure to make November ballot Here's a look at how the Royals won their third straight series: Bullpen game shutout The Royals' bullpen, tasked to fill in for missing starters Michael Lorenzen, Cole Ragans and Kris Bubic, combined to throw a ten-inning shutout. Kansas City sent nine total pitchers to the mound during the game, none allowed more than two hits. Perhaps the most impactful bullpen arm seen today was that of Jonathan Bowlan. He tossed a clean two innings with three punchouts and a walk. John Shreiber tallied three K's as well in one inning, and Carlos Estevez threw a clean inning while showing off his reflexes on a line-drive comebacker, which he snagged easily. While the shutout is impressive from Kansas City's bullpen, the Royals will need to make a move for pitching staff help before Thursday's trade deadline if they want to stay in contention. At this time, it seems that Cole Ragans and Michael Lorenzen could return sometime in August, but All-Star starter Kris Bubic won't pitch again this season. Royals win with three hits Kansas City Royals fans have been no strangers to frustrating offensive performances from their team this season. Today, however, was a rare occurrence where the offense struggled heavily and the Royals still got out with a win. It's hard to win games while racking up just three hits as a team, but Atlanta's offense struggled all the same with just five hits. The Royals made one of those hits count, though, when Salvador Perez came up to bat in the bottom of the tenth. The only other Royals to get on base via a base hit were Maikel Garcia and Tyler Tolbert. MLB trade deadline: Eugenio Suárez, Mitch Keller, Merrill Kelly among prized players who could move Coming up After the series win today, the Royals will travel north of the border to face the Toronto Blue Jays, who are currently tied with the Detroit Tigers for the winningest record in the American League. It's unknown at this time who will take the mound for the Blue Jays, but right-hander Michael Wacha (4-9, 3.53 ERA) is scheduled to start on Friday, August 1 at at 6:07 p.m. Wacha will look to get deep into the game to provide some relief for the taxed bullpen, but nothing is certain against a potent Toronto offense in their ballpark. The Royals are now 54-55, and just three-and-a-half games back from an AL Wild Card spot. They trail the Tampa Bay Rays, 54-54, and the Texas Rangers, 56-52. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Royals' All-Star dealt concerning injury update

The post Royals' All-Star dealt concerning injury update appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Kansas City Royals pitcher Cole Ragans will be out of action for at least another three weeks after being diagnosed with a mild rotator cuff strain in his left shoulder. The 27-year-old left-hander has been shut down from throwing and is expected to be re-evaluated in early July, according to the team. Advertisement Ragans first felt discomfort after his June 5 outing against the Cardinals, which was his first appearance following a previous stint on the injured list for a left groin strain. On June 11, the Royals officially placed him back on the IL, retroactive to June 8. A recent second medical opinion confirmed the initial diagnosis: no surgery or injection is needed, just some good old-fashioned rest. Even though he's understandably frustrated about being sidelined again, Ragans is trying to stay positive and focus on his recovery. 'It gives you little things to look forward to through it,' Ragans shared with 'It still sucks. I want to be out there… but you can't rush something like this.' The Royals are taking a cautious approach, aiming for his return sometime after the All-Star break. Manager Matt Quatraro highlighted the silver lining in the situation. 'No surgery. No injection. Just rest,' he said, reassuring that Ragans' long-term outlook is still bright. In the meantime, the Royals will lean on a mix of pitchers, including rookie Noah Cameron, veteran Seth Lugo, and Michael Wacha, to keep the rotation steady. This marks Ragans' second trip to the IL in 2025, interrupting a season where he has a 2-3 record with a 5.18 ERA over 10 starts. Last year, he wrapped up the season with a 3.14 ERA and 223 strikeouts across 31 games, earning his first All-Star nod and finishing fourth in AL Cy Young voting. The Royals are hopeful he can return to that impressive form once he's back on the mound. Royals' Cole Ragans receives ‘positive MRI results'

The post Royals' Cole Ragans receives 'positive MRI results' appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Kansas City Royals have been dying for any bit of good news in recent weeks. They are 4-9 in their last 14 games, 5.5 games out of the Wild Card, and 14 games behind in the AL Central. But on Sunday, they finally heard something good on their ace. Royals starter Cole Ragans has been sidelined with a rotator cuff injury for over a month but will begin throwing on Monday. Advertisement 'Injury update on Cole Ragans: He had his follow-up MRI and received positive results, manager Matt Quatraro said. The plan is for Ragans to begin throwing again tomorrow. Still, a ways to go, but good first step,' Anne Rogers of reported. Ragans was one of the best pitchers in the American League in 2024, making the All-Star Game and finishing fourth in Cy Young voting. But 2025 was not as kind to him, with a 5.18 ERA in ten starts before the injury. His last three starts were particularly rough, with 13 runs allowed in 13 innings. Ragans' last start for the Royals was on June 5, in the second game of a doubleheader against the St Louis Cardinals. KC was 33-30 after that win but has won just nine games since. The AL Central, outside of the Tigers, has been poor in that stretch as well. But it all may be too little, too late for the Royals. The Royals finish the first half with two home series, first against the Pittsburgh Pirates and then against the New York Mets. They need to go into the All-Star Break on a hot streak to have any chance at making the playoffs. If they can poke over .500 and get Ragans back all before August, Kansas City could be a dangerous team down the stretch in the AL. Royals outfielder Mark Canha placed on 10-day IL with left elbow injury

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals placed outfielder Mark Canha on the 10-day injured list with a left elbow injury Tuesday. Canha is in his first season with the Royals after being acquired in a trade during spring training. He's hitting .212 with a .537 OPS in 46 games this season. Advertisement Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said Canha's injury doesn't appear to be serious. 'I did some research,' he said. 'Epicondylitis is 'tennis elbow tendinitis.' It's been bothering him for a week or so. He thought he'd work through it and turn the corner a little bit. But a couple of swings yesterday really aggravated it, and he's more sore. He knew he wasn't going to be able to put good swings on the ball.' In a corresponding move, infielder Cam Devanney was selected from Triple-A Omaha. He will make his MLB debut in his first appearance with the club, though he was not in the starting lineup Tuesday. To make room on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Cole Ragans was transferred to the 60-day IL. He has been on the IL since June 11 with a left rotator cuff strain. Advertisement Quatraro said Ragans' move was strictly 'procedural.' 'It gives us a roster spot to call up,' he continued. 'He's not going to be back by that date (when he's eligible to return from the 60-day list), so there was no risk for us to do that. And it gives us the 40-man spot.' Ragans has had injuries all season after a 2024 season that saw him reach his first All-Star Game and finish fourth in the AL Cy Young voting. Ragans said this move won't affect his return to the Royals rotation. 'That's a month away,' he said. 'I started throwing yesterday, so I don't really have a full timeline, but it'll be a lot further into the throwing progression. We needed a roster spot, and that made sense. It literally does not change anything on how I come back, or when I come back.' Advertisement For Devanney, it's a dream come true. He said his parents, his sister and a couple of friends who could get off work will be in attendance. 'I think they're getting here about an hour before game time, so it's gonna be a little close," he said. "But I think they're gonna make it.' In 69 games with Omaha, he's batting .272 with 18 home runs and 55 RBIs. 'It's surreal, man, I'm still processing,' he said. 'I think you survive in this game (by) being adaptable and versatile. I understand the dynamic up here and what they're looking for, so I'm just trying to fit their needs.' Quatraro complimented Devanney's versatility. Advertisement 'Cam's had a great year in Triple-A,' Quatraro said. 'He had a good year last year. He's played really well in the infield. He's played some outfield as well. So his versatility and another right-handed bat was something we were looking for. He could be a versatile player off the bench, which is what he'll be tonight, but we're not going to be afraid to play him either.' ___ AP MLB:
