Saquon Barkley Turns Down Invitation From Trump Administration
Saquon Barkley Turns Down Invitation From Trump Administration originally appeared on The Spun. Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley may have played a round of golf with President Donald Trump, but that doesn't mean he's ready to accept a role with the American government. Last week, Trump signed an executive order to bring back the Presidential Fitness Test. In addition to revitalizing this fitness test that was created in the late 1950s, he named the newest members of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. "Meanwhile, the revitalized President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition will create school-based programs to reward excellence in physical education and support the development of a Presidential Fitness Award — working in partnership with athletes, coaches, teams, and schools to champion access to fitness and healthy living for all Americans. The Council will also play an important role in restoring tradition to college athletics, including reforming the broken transfer portal and keeping men out of women's sports," a press release from the White House stated. "The Council will include Executive Director Catherine Granito, Chair Bryson DeChambeau, Saquon Barkley, Gary Bettman, Nick Bosa, Harrison Butker, Cody Campbell, Roger Goodell, Wayne Gretzky, Nelly Korda, Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Mariano Rivera, Tony Romo, Annika Sörenstam, Tua Tagovailoa, Lawrence Taylor, Matthew Tkachuk, and Mariano Rivera. Several fans criticized Barkley after seeing his name on the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Following practice on Monday, the All-Pro running back revealed that he was informed about Trump's new council earlier this year. However, he turned down this offer from his administration. "A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council. So I'm not really too familiar with it," Barkley said. "I felt like I am going to be super busy, so me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned." There you have it, NFL fans. Despite all the buzz on social media, Barkley won't be teaming up with Trump this fall. Barkley will, however, try to lead the Eagles back to the Super Barkley Turns Down Invitation From Trump Administration first appeared on The Spun on Aug 4, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

Montana changes course, opts in to NCAA's House settlement for this year
MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — The University of Montana is changing course and will opt-in this year to the NCAA's House settlement. The recent settlement means athletic programs across the country are free to start paying millions to their athletes in one of the biggest changes in the history of college athletics. The deadline for schools around the country to opt out was Monday. Montana was originally planning to opt-in during the 2026-27 academic year. The school this week explained that it switched after rosters were grandfathered into the final approved settlement so that roster cuts weren't necessary. Athletic director Kent Haslam told MTN Sports the 'initial settlement had no provision for accommodating roster limits through what's now called 'designated student-athletes.' But as it unfolded, there was an opportunity to preserve our (current) roster limits by grandfathering in your current squad sizes. That completely changed our mindset.' The settlement means schools will be able to make payments to athletes for use of their name, image and likeness (NIL). A handful of schools have decided to wait it out at least a year to see how things develop, including legal risks and Title IX concerns. The Ivy League said in January that its eight schools — which do not award athletic scholarships — will not participate. Military rules prevent Navy, Air Force, and Army from compensating athletes through name, image and likeness deals. But alongside the academies are others choosing to watch the settlement unfold from the sidelines during year one. Nebraska-Omaha and Montana were originally among the schools opting out. Rival Montana State has opted in, raising the recruiting stakes for two programs that are often among the best teams in the Football Championship Subdivision. Haslam told MTN Sports: 'Everything surrounding the House settlement we were ready for. We were excited for everything around revenue sharing and scholarship and financial and how that's restructured. The hesitancy was around roster limits, and once that got resolved and we could make sure that we were ready to do it, we opted in.' ___ AP college sports:

Baylor mourns death of freshman lineman after he was shot in Mississippi
Baylor's football program mourned the loss Wednesday of Alex Foster, an 18-year-old defensive lineman who was set for his freshman season after taking a redshirt last year. According to multiple reports, Foster was killed by gunfire in his hometown of Greenville, Mississippi. Greenville police officers were called to the scene of a shooting just after midnight on Tuesday night, and discovered a man in a car who was suffering from gunshot wounds, a police spokesperson told the Associated Press. The man was said to have been transported to a hospital, where he died shortly thereafter. A local coroner's office confirmed to the AP and to the Mississippi Clarion Ledger that the man in question was Foster.

NCAA softball tournament winners, losers, snubs from 2025 selection show
The NCAA selection committee has spoken, and the 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament field is set. Sixty-four teams will begin their road to a potential appearance in the Women's College World Series at the end of May and beginning of June in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The teams included in the field are the 31 automatic qualifiers for conference champions and 33 at-large teams. REQUIRED READING: NCAA softball tournament format: How bracket works in 2025 Starting on May 16, these teams will play in 16 regionals across the country, hosted by the 16 national seeds. The winner of each region will advance to play in a best-of-three super regional round, with the eight remaining teams advancing to Oklahoma City for the WCWS. The last two teams standing will play in a best-of-three series to determine the national champion. However, just like every year, there will be a handful of teams shaking their heads following the NCAA softball selection show. Some teams will feel they should have been a regional host, while some will feel they were poorly ranked and got a bad shake of which regional they have to travel for. Of course, several teams felt like they were unfairly left out of the tournament. Here's a look at the winners, losers and snubs from the 2025 NCAA women's college softball field: The SEC had an NCAA Tournament record-14 teams, including seven of the top eight national seeds and nine of the top 15, capping off a great season. That means if chalk holds through the regional round, only one non-SEC team will host a super regional: No. 5 seed Florida State. The Aggies are the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA softball tournament for the first time in program history. The Aggies edged out the four-time defending champion Oklahoma due to their No. 1 ranking in the RPI at the end of the season. Texas A&M did not have a chance to defeat the Sooners in the SEC softball tournament championship game, but could face the Sooners in Oklahoma City. Belmont, Mercer, North Florida, Saint Louis and Santa Clara are first-timers reaching the NCAA softball tournament this season. The Bruins defeated Southern Illinois in the MVC Championship game to earn their first-ever berth, while Mercer was crowned the Southern Conference champions. The Ospreys earned their first ASUN Tournament title in program history, while the Billikens secured the 2025 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship title with a walk-off win. The Broncos earned their first West Coast Conference championship to automatically qualify. Seeding matters when it comes to the NCAA softball tournament, and a single seed line can make a huge difference. The Gamecocks edged out No. 9 UCLA for the final top-eight seed. That means they'll be set to host the Bruins at home in the super regional, if both teams advance. REQUIRED READING: NCAA softball bracket: Matchups, top seeds, regional sites for 2025 NCAA Tournament The Bruins ended the season with an RPI of No. 4 and were the runners-up to Michigan in the Big Ten tournament. However, none of that was enough for UCLA to clinch the last top-eight seed to earn a hosting bid. Instead, if the No. 9 seed Bruins advance to the super regional, they'll have to travel to Columbia to take on South Carolina on the road. The Hokies had an impressive season but fell apart during the sixth inning of the ACC tournament championship game against eventual champion Clemson. For its trouble, Virginia Tech has to travel to No. 15 seed Alabama in the Tuscaloosa Regional, where the Hokies and Crimson Tide split two games during the Easton Bama Bash in February. The Ducks won the regular season Big Ten championship in their first year in the conference. They also took two out of three games against UCLA during the regular season, but are ranked as the last nationally seeded team at No. 16. The Ducks also had wins over No. 5 seed Florida State (2-0) and No. 7 seed Tennessee (1-0) in nonconference play. REQUIRED READING: When does 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament start? Regional schedules, venues The Wolf Pack posted a 41-14 record playing against a top-70 strength of schedule. It also finished with an RPI of 36 but, after losing in the Mountain West Tournament, was excluded from the tournament. It's hard to say the No. 2 overall seed was snubbed in any way — but as the four-time defending champs, the Sooners had a real argument as the No. 1 seed after winning the regular season SEC championship in the toughest conference in the country.
