The door is open for players to return to the panel says newly appointed Mayo manager Andy Moran
He said he was hopeful that Cillian O'Connor would return to the panel and said that one player may retire to go travelling. Moran said that he had already spoken to a number of players and was trying to help players get jobs closer to Mayo to help them commit to playing for the county. Moran has been ratified for a three-year term. The former Mayo senior footballer and 2017 Footballer of the Year was ratified by delegates at tonight's county board meeting in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park in Castlebar. Colm Boyle (39), four-time All-Star and former teammate of Moran's, will act as coach while former Derry manager Paddy Tally will be head coach. When asked why he applied for the Mayo job, Moran said: 'Why not now? This is 24/7. We were with Leitrim for three years, and Monaghan for the last 12 months, it's not a 40-hour a week job, it's a 60-hour a week job. You are up at six o'clock in the morning, it's the last thing you do before you go to bed, you're putting your kids to bed and you're going back on the laptop looking at Huddle. Then for Monaghan it was 20 hours a week travelling on top of that. It's not a normal job. 'I'm 41 years of age. I've a family, a good age, a very supportive wife, you are getting into your 50s, you are getting into your 60s, it's a hard job to do, so do it when you're young, do it when you've energy, do it when you're fresh, why not? Moran said that he would like to see Mayo adapt their style of play to the new rules, saying that Paddy Tally was 'very much on the same wavelength' as him regarding how they wanted to play the game. 'Anyone that's watched Leitrim or Monaghan or anything over the last couple of years, I think you'll be able to see the style that we want to play without giving too much away,' said Moran. 'I think every team has their own personality. You see in Jim McGuinness's book, he explains why they hand pass the ball so much, because of the win. We run the ball, flying wing-backs. Some of our best players ever came from the back line, Keith Higgins, Colm Boyle, Noel Connelly, James Nallen. We have a style of football that we play and the key for me and Colm and Paddy is that we maximise that style of football.' Moran said that a number of positions on his backroom team still need to be filled. Dr Seán Moffatt (doctor) and Martin McIntyre (physio) will remain on while Conor Finn will stay on as head of strength and conditioning. Moran would like to place greater focus on strength and conditioning across all Mayo intercounty teams. Colm Boyle said that being asked to join the Mayo senior team as a coach was 'a no-brainer. The Davitts clubman retired from intercounty football in 2021 and has coached with the Mayo Minor football team and managed the U-19 development team. 'I'm just excited to work with the group, excited to work with Andy and Paddy and the Mayo senior football team again and see what we can do. Moran's appointment was universally welcomed by delegates who spoke at the meeting, with a number who praised his commitment as a player. Moran, who is 41 years old, made 153 appearances for the Mayo seniors between 2003 and 2019 and scored 22-226. The Ballaghaderreen man managed the Leitrim senior footballers for three seasons between 2022 and 2024. He also took charge of the county's U-20 footballers during that period. He spent the 2025 season coaching the Monaghan senior team under Gabriel Bannigan as the Ulster men won the Division 1 league title and reached the All-Ireland quarter final. A review will take place at the end of each season of his term as Mayo senior football team manager. He was proposed for the role of Mayo senior team manager at tonight's Mayo GAA county board meeting by Mayo GAA Secretary Ronan Kirrane, who chaired the county board meeting in the absence of Mayo GAA Chairman Séamus Tuohy and Mayo GAA Vice-Chairman Michael Diskin. Tuohy was absent through illness while Diskin is currently out of the country. Moran was seconded for the position by Ballaghaderreen GAA delegate, John Kilgallon. Kirrane said that 'several' candidates had applied for the job before Mayo GAA's An Coiste Bainistí chose Moran as their preferred candidate last Monday night. The Davitts clubman chaired the county board meeting in the absence of Mayo GAA Chairman Séamus Tuohy and Mayo GAA Vice-Chairman Michael Diskin.'

Andy Moran wants 'best players in Mayo' playing for county
New Mayo manager Andy Moran says his immediate objective is to get the best players in the county playing for the Green and Red, which he suggests "might not have always been the case" in recent years. The former Footballer of the Year was ratified as the county's new boss this evening, with former team-mate Colm Boyle and recently departed Derry manager Paddy Tally arriving as part of his ticket. Moran takes on the role following a turbulent season, in which Mayo failed to progress beyond the group phase, after which Kevin McStay - who took ill in the wake of the group stage defeat to Cavan - and Stephen Rochford were "relieved of their roles" according to a contentiously worded statement. The eight-time Connacht medallist stressed that one of his priorities was getting Mayo's best players back on the pitch - notably Cillian O'Connor and Padraig O'Hora, who opted out ahead of the 2025 campaign. "The key thing is to get the best players in Mayo playing for Mayo," Moran told RTÉ Gaelic Games correspondent Marty Morrissey. "Which, quite unusually over the last couple of years, mightn't have always been the case. We need to get the best players playing. "In terms of young talent, there's a crop of Under-20s there that just missed out narrowly against Louth this year (in the All-Ireland semi-final). There's a crop of minors coming through that are really talented, who lost to Armagh in last year's All-Ireland semi-final. "There's been a few Connacht titles (at underage) and a few green shoots over the last couple of years, which is great to see. It's about how we keep being competitive with the strong players we have and embedding these young players in amongst it. That's going to be the major role for the management team over the next couple of years." While Mayo remain in Division 1 and reached a league final in 2025, they have failed to get past the All-Ireland quarter-final stage in the past four seasons as Galway have hogged the Nestor Cup. One perceived weakness in 2025 was a difficulty in racking up scores - especially two-pointers - under the new rules. Adapting better to the new rules will be a focus for the year ahead, says Moran. "We're back to the basics. As we know, Galway have won four Connacht titles in a row. Before we even get to talking about All-Irelands and '51 and all this stuff, the big thing is we need to get back to work. Get back to basics. We need to build on some of the good work that Kevin (McStay) and Stephen (Rochford) have done last year. And we need to get better at every aspect we're chasing. "Where can we get better? I think the new rules are great to coach. The lads on the FRC don't need any more plaudits. They're probably embarrassed by the plaudits they're getting at this stage. But we can see it's a way better game. It's a way better product. "From a coaching/ management [perspective] it's a way better game to coach. Hopefully, myself, Colm Boyle and Paddy Tally can help out the Mayo players to really exploit the new elements of the new game and get back to being competitive at the latter stages of the championship, if we can." The Ballaghaderreen man takes on the senior management gig just six years after his inter-county retirement. In the mean-time, he spent three years as Leitrim manager, guiding them to promotion to Division 3 in his final season in 2024. Last year, he was a high-profile presence in Gabriel Bannigan's management team in Monaghan, the county defying initial gloomy predictions to power back to Division 1 in fine style before reaching an All-Ireland quarter-final in the summer. While Moran says he "loved" both those roles, his main ambition was always to take on the top job in Mayo. "I loved both counties. I loved both teams. But at the end of the day, this is where I'm from. This is I suppose where your heart is. Whenever the opportunity comes, you kind of have to jump at it. "Was it always an aim? Yes, it was always an aim. But do you think about that when you're managing other teams? You don't. You're really stuck in the moment, you're trying to get the best out of them players while you're there. And then some day, if you're deemed good enough and take your home county, that's great. "I always had great role models growing up in the likes of John O'Mahony and the likes of James Horan coming in in 2011 and John Maughan before him. I've always had my eye set on coaching and managing. "So, yes, you always think some day you'd love to get a rattle at it. Until that day arrives, I suppose it's a pipe dream. But it's come true today and we're back in the Mayo dressing room, so it's great."

Mayo GAA to propose Andy Moran as new football manager
Andy Moran is set to become the new manager of the Mayo senior footballers following the conclusion of the recruitment process. Colm Boyle and Paddy Tally will be part of his backroom team. An executive meeting of the Mayo County Board was called for Monday night after two candidates for the role were interviewed last week, 2017 Footballer of the Year Moran and Armagh All-Ireland winner Tony McEntee. Advertisement Following the gathering, Mayo GAA said in a statement that the ratification of Moran will be sought at the next county board meeting. He will be joined by his former Mayo teammate Boyle, and Tally, who recently stood down as Derry manager after just eight months in charge. Moran is set to take over from Kevin McStay, who was relieved of his role last June after three years in charge. Moran retired from intercounty football in 2019 after 183 appearances in League and Championship for Mayo. A two-time All Star, he won eight Connacht SFC championships. After retiring, Moran was appointed Leitrim manager in 2021. In 2024, they were promoted from Division 4. He also took charge of the county U20s that year, leading them to victory over his native county in the Connacht U20 championship. Advertisement After leaving Leitrim, Moran joined Monaghan as a coach. They reached the All-Ireland quarter-final before losing to Donegal. Mayo endured a disappointing campaign. They reached the Division 1 League final, where they were beaten by Kerry before going on to lose the Connacht final to rivals Galway. A group stage defeat against Cavan ultimately cost them as they failed to progress to the knockout rounds. Mayo GAA described the recruitment process as "comprehensive and robust" adding that the "level of interest and calibre of applicants once again highlights the strength and reputation of Mayo football".
