Sporty youngsters and their families have a colourful day out
Sporty children of all ages plus mums, dads and grandparents packed into the Bolton Arena Community Sports Village to try out all sorts of free activities. The Community Active funday attracted more than 1,000 visitors from tiny tots to teens and adults, all keen to try out sports from Pickleball to football with Bolton Wanderers in the Community and from gymnastics to gym sessions. There was a climbing wall courtesy of The Anderton Centre, a staffed fire appliance from Horwich Community Fire Station, tennis and a Samba band to lead around 250 participants in the Colour Run to the 3k course around the track. The Mayor of Horwich, Cllr Victoria Rigby, and Consort Harry Bromley, officially started the Colour Run. 'It provides a really positive experience for people who might not know what the Arena offers,' she said. 'I was taken with the netball in particular as I used to play at school but it's so nice to see all ages taking part in different sports.' The Colour Run raised £1,500 for Bolton Hospice, boosted by a further £330 from additional paint sales and a cake sale run by staff from EEG. Stuart Kay, the Arena's Head of Sport and Communities, said he was 'really pleased' with the response to the day. 'People certainly seemed to enjoy all the activities and they had a chance to try out sports like Pickleball that not everyone had heard of. 'The day was all about the community and family and our giving something back.' Parents and excited children were all delighted with the day. Mother-of-two Sarah Collier was at the open day with nine-year-old Martha and two-year-old George who enjoyed the structured fun. 'I think the open day is a great idea,' she stated, "We wouldn't have known half of what they do at the Arena without it. 'Martha has really enjoyed the gymnastics and the tennis and George loved the football. The coaches have been great and I think it's such a good idea to allow children to try out different sports they might never have tried before. 'It's been really enjoyable – relaxed but professional … and fun!'

Renfrew Pride celebrates with a race and a community picnic in downtown Renfrew
Renfrew – Last Saturday's Renfrew Pride Picnic in Low Square was certainly the most colourful and diverse event held so far this year with non-stop singing and dancing throughout the day. The event, sponsored by Renfrew Pride and pflagRenfrew County, attracted visitors from Pembroke, Arnprior, Ottawa and Quebec who enjoyed music, artistic performances and a barbeque lunch. In celebration of Pride month, two events were held and organized by members of the local LGBTQ2S+ community. Renfrew hosted its second annual Colour Run that started from Ma-te-Way Park at 10:30 a.m. with runners, walkers and a couple of cyclists heading out on a 3.5 km trek along the Millennium Trail, Lisgar Avenue and the Algonquin Trail to the finish line on Railway Avenue and Low Square. When the first of 10 booths/display tents opened at 11 a.m. there were several curious visitors and residents who found a spot and enjoyed the beautiful sunny skies along with musical performers. Some were treated to a special reading by Pembroke resident and drag queen Toxxic Waist. The bombastic artist, along with her special friend, Minnie Mouse of Disney fame, read stories to both children and adults and encouraged members of the audience to join them when they sang songs. Among the displays were information booths with literature and pamphlets explaining the importance of the day, handmade jewelry and crafts, and food tents. Volunteers were kept busy handing out free hot dogs and hamburgers to more than 150 people throughout the day. When she wasn't busy entertaining the crowd, Toxxic Waist took a moment to reflect on the symbolism and importance of Pride Month (June) and the rare chance for members of her community to be among those who accept them as they are. 'Events like the Colour Run and this picnic are held not only to celebrate the amazing diversity of our community, but it allows people to come and meet us and get to know us and hopefully educate them on our lives and how we just want to live our lives in a safe, welcoming environment,' she said. 'We want people, especially young people, to understand it's okay to be different and it's okay to be yourself. And, of course, we want to have fun.' Error! "Thank you so much for your support – we can't wait to see you there, covered in colour and full of joy." Participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible as tickets are selling fast.
