Adjustments continue for Chicago White Sox rookie infielder Colson Montgomery: ‘Learn from each experience'

ATLANTA — Colson Montgomery did not play Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves as he recovered from left side soreness. The Chicago White Sox shortstop preferred to be in the lineup, but he made the most of the day off. 'These times where you can have maybe a day or two, you definitely go back and look at when you were rolling, when you were feeling good,' Montgomery said Tuesday. 'You're not trying to try something new, you are trying to re-create. You want to be as consistent as you can. 'I still feel pretty good. I think it's 'Angry August' for a reason. A lot of guys are feeling a little tired. But it's no excuse. It's a time where you can sit back and reflect on some things.' Montgomery was back in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale at Truist Park. 'Excited to have him back out there,' manager Will Venable said before Wednesday's game. 'Really just happy that this wasn't a major issue, and he was back feeling good.' Montgomery suffered the setback in the sixth inning of Monday's game, exiting shortly thereafter. 'Everything was precautionary (Monday),' Montgomery said. 'I don't know if it's something to do with the heat going on. It felt like a little cramp in the side. They weren't going to take the risk.' He went 0-for-3 with a walk before leaving Monday's 13-9 win. While the rookie entered Wednesday tied for sixth in majors since the All-Star break in RBIs (26) and home runs (10), he went 2-for-16 in the first four games during the road trip with a double, two runs and a walk. 'With his year, and he'd probably be transparent about it, with his early struggles (in the minors) and his ability to make adjustments and go through that — I think he's well positioned to be here,' Venable said. 'And now, having cooled off, to figure out what he needs to do to get back to performing at the level that he knows he can.' Over the final month-plus of the season, Montgomery is focusing on his health and staying as consistent as he can with his at-bats. 'Sometimes you show you can do damage (at the plate), they will try to see if you chase and things like that,' Montgomery said. 'Sticking more to my plan and my approach rather than what they want to do to me. That's the difference in sometimes you going into an at-bat and you know what they are going to do, but you have to know what you want to do. 'I think that's been my thing. Sometimes I go in there and I know they are going to try to do something and so I get away from what I want to do.' Montgomery has noticed opponents pitching him backward. '(They) start offspeed and try to steal strikes with fastballs late in the count,' Montgomery said. '(And) try to change my eye level with a lot of things. The biggest thing for me is just trying to stay tall, stay to center field, left-center, kind of think line drive through the shortstop.' Adjustments, as Montgomery is well aware, are part of the game. 'He started (hitting) fastballs in the zone right away, and I think that they pretty quickly got off of that, and we've seen a lot of changeups, a lot of sliders below the zone,' Venable said. 'We've seen maybe a little more chase, and I think also, with where he was out with his swing, maybe missing some of those fastballs early in the count, and then having to deal with offspeed stuff later, it's been a little bit of an adjustment. 'But that's what it is. We know that you come up in this league, you've got a couple of days to sneak attack some people, and then they start figuring you out, and then it's your turn to make an adjustment. And it's not going to stop for the next 12 years or however long he plays.' Montgomery had a .220/.285/.492 slash line with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs in 38 games coming into Wednesday. He said the experiences since being called up on July 4 have 'been awesome.' 'Definitely experienced a lot of things from the highs and the lows, from winning to losing,' Montgomery said. 'I always keep saying, you just have to learn from each experience. 'It's all just going to help in the future.' The Sox placed right-handed pitcher Elvis Peguero on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow strain, the team announced Wednesday. He allowed two runs on one hit with two walks in one-third of an inning during Tuesday's 11-10 loss to the Braves. In Wednesday's corresponding move, the Sox recalled right-hander Wikelman González from Triple-A Charlotte. He has a 2.25 ERA and six strikeouts in five relief appearances over three stints with the Sox this season.

White Sox's Colson Montgomery is confident as he thrives in the Major Leagues

As the White Sox got swept in Kansas City, Colson Montgomery cooled off — going 2-for-13 at the plate. But the 23-year-old slugging shortstop is one of the young talents sparking hope for the future on the South Side. Montgomery explained in a one-on-one interview with CBS News Chicago how he made up his mind to live up to the first-round pick hype. He was the No. 22 overall pick in the 2021 Draft, though he only made his first Major League appearance recently. "I feel like when I go up there and I try to do what I want to do, things usually — I'm a lot more comfortable up there than when you go up there and you're thinking about, what's his best pitch? What does he want to do to me?" he said. "So I think it's pretty much just doing what I want to do at the plate." Montgomery made the jump to the Big Leagues this year. In April, Montgomery was sent to the White Sox facility in Arizona for two weeks, and then returned to Triple-A Charlotte Knights before the White Sox recalled him in July. He said the adversity and struggles this season have all been a learning experience. "It's like I've told some people before — I'm not going to sit here and, you know, throw a little pity party about everything I had to go through, and feel sorry for me, because you know, I needed to go through that, you know?" he said. "Early in my career in the lower levels, I had a lot of success, so I kind of got punched in the mouth, and I feel like you can really respond two ways, you know? You can go in hiding, or you can kind of try to do whatever you can to get out of it, and I had a lot of support with the White Sox really believing in me, and that was kind of one of the big things that helped me." Montgomery made his Major League debut with the White Sox on July 4, and has taken off in the weeks since. He made an impressive diving, over-the-shoulder catch in the second inning in that game — which the Sox won 3-2 — and hit a 452-foot home run when the Sox took on the Cleveland Guardians last weekend. He was asked what his favorite moment in his short time in the Majors has been. "I think one of the best moments is just when we're winning. You know, my first series in Colorado — being able to win that series — that was pretty special. And then coming out of All-Star break — first sweep in the Big Leagues, you know, with the Pirates," Montgomery said. "So I think just all the moments with these guys in winning I think are the best." Montgomery also said he is sticking "100%" with torpedo bats, Torpedo bats Sticking with 100% "It's like a thing as a hitter, you know? Once you — it's like certain batting gloves, certain bats you just feel most comfortable in, and that's one of the biggest things in the boxes—just feel as comfortable as you can — and I don't know, when I feel like I have any kind of bat in my hand, I feel like I'm dangerous, you know?" he said. "But I don't know, I like the torpedo, and I guess it likes me too."

August 13 - Yoendrys Gomez pitched five sharp innings in his first major league start and Colson Montgomery punctuated a five-run fifth with a two-run single as the host Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-6 on Tuesday. Chicago evened the three-game series at one game apiece behind a 13-hit attack that also coaxed two bases-loaded walks. Edgar Quero smacked a solo home run as part of a 3-for-5, three-RBI effort while Mike Tauchman, Kyle Teel and Curtis Mead added two hits each. Detroit drew within the final margin on Colt Keith's three-run home run in the ninth. Keith and Riley Greene both had two hits for the Tigers. Recalled from Triple-A Charlotte before the game, Gomez shined in his first big-league action since May 19. The rookie right-hander, who also pitched with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers this season, yielded one run and one hit. Gomez (2-1) walked one, hit two batters and struck out a career-high seven. Jordan Leasure fanned Spencer Torkelson for the final out to earn his fourth save. Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty retired the first six batters and limited the White Sox to a pair of singles through four innings before encountering major trouble in the fifth. Chicago delivered four straight hits to open the inning, including Mead's game-tying bloop single that fell beyond shortstop Trey Sweeney. Montgomery gave the White Sox a 3-1 lead, smacking a two-run single to right field. Luis Robert Jr. added an RBI single to end Flaherty's night, and Teel later worked a bases-loaded walk from Brant Hurter to cap the outburst. Flaherty (6-12), who defeated the White Sox on April 4 and June 2, permitted five runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked one and fanned six. Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Wenceel Perez. Dillon Dingler hit a two-run home run in the seventh to draw the Tigers within 6-3. Robert, Chicago's center fielder, tipped the ball over the fence with his glove while attempting a leaping catch. The start of the game was delayed by 50 minutes due to rain.
