Former Bruin shines for Indianapolis Colts in NFL preseason debut
Indianapolis Colts cornerback and former UCLA Bruin Alex Johnson made a jaw-dropping interception. The big play came on his first pass against the Baltimore Ravens in an NFL preseason game on the league's first full weekend of action. Alex Johnson was undrafted in 2024. He signed with the New York Giants until he was released. He then signed with the Colts' practice squad on October 5, 2024. The undrafted cornerback had his first live-action appearance for the Colts. He intercepted a pass near the right sideline to get his teammates hyped for the NFL season. Veteran backup quarterback Cooper Rush started the game for the Ravens. He threw a quick pass to the right sideline for wide receiver Dayton Wade, but Johnson was ready. The speedy cornerback ran in stride with Wade, both players getting hands on one another, but Johnson saw the ball was headed toward them. The former Bruin shifted his body and caught the ball with one hand before he fell to the ground. In the game the Colts eventually lost, 24-16, Johnson had 2 more pass deflections and one more tackle, according to ESPN. In Pro Football Focus's rankings of the best players on the Colts from the preseason game, Alex Johnson was ranked No. 1 with a 94.9 rating, according to Colts Wire. According to Colts Wire, the 24-year-old was listed as the backup nickelback on the unofficial roster provided by the Colts on Aug. 4. On July 8, Paul Bretl of Colts Wire wrote Johnson was likely to be a practice squad player, but after a season ending injury to rookie cornerback Justin Walley, he now has him making the roster on his article projecting the 53-man roster after the preseason game. If he continues to be a ballhawk in the preseason it would continue to increase his chances of making the team, but if he for some reason does not make the 53-man roster, he will have a chance to make it on another team's roster.

3 Things to know about new Colts CB Charvarius Ward
3 Things to know about new Colts CB Charvarius Ward Here are three things to know about new Indianapolis Colts' free agency cornerback Charvarius Ward. Indianapolis Colts GM Chris Ballard swung big in free agency and landed one of the top cornerbacks available in Charvarius Ward. Ward is one year removed from an All-Pro season in 2023, where he allowed a completion rate of only 54% and had a whopping five interceptions and 17 pass breakups, per PFF. Ward has a career completion percentage of just 55% with 10 interceptions, 61 pass breakups, and a passer rating when targeted of 82.9. The addition of Ward also adds a player to the Colts' defense who's had a lot of team success, which includes winning a Super Bowl in Kansas City and going to a Super Bowl in San Francisco. For some added insight into what Ward adds to the Colts' defense, Kyle Madson, the managing editor of 49ers Wire, answered a few of our questions. Colts Wire: What kind of player are the Colts getting in Ward? Madson: Ward is a dawg. He played his best football in 2023 and was a key piece of the 49ers' run to the Super Bowl. He's a big, physical corner, but that's not because of a lack of speed or athleticism. Ward is a bona fide No. 1 NFL CB when he's locked in, and he has no problem following a team's No. 1 wide receiver (go peep his matchups with DK Metcalf). Personal tragedy derailed his 2024 campaign, so I'm largely disregarding his lack of production last season. The Colts got a really, really good player. Colts Wire: Where is Ward at his best? Madson: He's at his best playing on the outside and in press-man where he can get up to the line of scrimmage and get his hands on the receiver. Colts Wire: Are there any areas of his game where opponents have found success against him? Madson: There were a couple times he got beat deep, but that's sort of the give and take of playing as physical as he does. Sometimes he'll get beat off the line and a receiver will get a step on him. I wouldn't call that something teams always had success with, though. He has good enough closing speed to make up for a lost step a lot of the time.
