Drone attackers hunted: Joint operations underway in the desert

Shafaq News – Baghdad The Joint Operations Command announced on Friday the start of a wide search operation covering several areas in the al-Hadr desert within the sectors of western Nineveh and Saladin provinces. According to a statement, the operation aims to verify and follow up on important intelligence related to thwarting plans and attempts to target security forces and vital sites in the country. The Command stated that the recent attacks on oil installations and fields, as well as attempted strikes on military bases and camps, constitute a serious and reprehensible act that threatens Iraq's stability. These actions, it warned, undermine national efforts aimed at reconstruction, development, and long-term security. It emphasized that 'security forces will actively pursue all individuals involved in destabilizing the country or targeting its vital resources and interests,' adding that this includes not only the perpetrators but also anyone who collaborates with them. Earlier, Sabah al-Numan, spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, announced that a high-level Iraqi investigation has identified the source and perpetrators of a series of suicide drone attacks that targeted key military radar sites across the country, confirming that the drones were launched from within Iraq using foreign-made equipment.

Bill Gates' daughter Phoebe, 22, lands a new side hustle... after her billionaire dad said he would not give her money

Bill Gates 's youngest daughter Phoebe has landed a new job. The fashion show regular is working with Sophia Kianni and Tay Nakamoto for a new podcast episode, Sticking With Style. They are offering tips on upgrading dorm room space for the fall 2025 semester. The project is part of an endorsement deal with the brand Command, which proves Phoebe is moving more into the world of an influencer. The 22-year-old studied Human Biology at California 's Stanford University. She is the daughter to the Microsoft co-founder, 69, and his philanthropist ex wife Melinda Gates, 60. Phoebe and her siblings, Jennifer, 28, and Rory, 25, will famously receive a minute percentage of their father's fortune because Bill will instead divert his mammoth fortune to charitable organizations. In April she discussed her father's extraordinary success and the pressure that brings on her new podcast, The Burnouts, alongside her business partner and close friend, Sophia. She said: 'I had so much insecurity and such a desire to prove myself at Stanford. 'I came in, I was like, ''I'm so privileged, I'm a nepo baby'', like I had so much insecurity around that. I feel it's so hard when you're a freshman in college because you have no experience. You have nothing.' Despite her billionaire father's gravitas, the graduate, who is dating Sir Paul McCartney 's grandson, Arthur Donald, said she was 'flat-out rejected' from a business class after devising her first pitch, Bluetooth tampons, giving women health status updates throughout their periods. 'This was our first big failure of many, many, many,' Phoebe admitted. 'I don't think it's really a shocker that we got flat-out rejected from this class - they asked us, ''What problem does this solve? How would it make money?'' We couldn't answer those questions.' It wasn't just her Stanford professors who doubted Phoebe's entrepreneurial skills, but Bill also blocked his daughter's request to drop out of school to pursue her debut company despite him doing something similar 49 years earlier. Phoebe, who will soon launch her company, digital fashion platform Phia, which she describes as a 'new way to shop' online, with Kianni, said: 'I remember even when we wanted to start the company, him being like, ''Are you sure you want to do this?'' 'Because both of my siblings were incredibly intelligent and took very typical career paths - my brother's a genius, my sister has two kids and a horse-back riding career and is in residency [as a Junior Pediatrician] - but there wasn't this adverse risk of failure.' Phoebe and her siblings won't get a big inheritance. The star continued: 'So my parents were really cautious when I was like, ''I want to do Stanford abroad and do this remotely and finish up my degree and do the start-up''. 'They were very much like, ''You need to finish your degree. You don't just get to drop out and [start] a company.'' Which is so funny because my dad literally did that - that's like the reason I'm able to go to Stanford, have my tuition paid.' Bill dropped out of Harvard in 1975 after three semesters to start Microsoft, a decision which helped earn him his estimated $107 billion (£83 billion), according to Forbes. Phoebe added that, despite having a close relationship with her father, she has few recollections of him discussing Microsoft with her. 'I literally never remember my dad talking to me about the start of Microsoft. I literally mostly just remember him talking about the Foundation,' she said. Instead of depending entirely on knowledge passed down from her father, Phoebe claimed that she is securing her future through a solid work ethic. She said: 'I really like the results we're seeing - and this is not just true for business, but any career you're in: it is just the result of habits. 'The tracking we're seeing with our product is really just the result of our habits; it's the result of loving your work, waking up early, working 'til damn late on this company because you love it. 'It's not work-life balance: this is your life, and you really enjoy it. It has to be fun, and you have to have the habits built around that. 'And controlling - being able to control that part of your brain that wants to stay in bed and being like, I don't want to eat but I need to go eat lunch because I need to be productive this afternoon.' Gates offered the example of embracing rejection as a habit she and Kianni adopted to enable success. She said: 'A habit that we had that I thought was so good at the beginning was just constant outreach and constant acceptance of rejection. 'When we were trying to get our first partnerships for Phia, we would outreach like... we maxed out the LinkedIn credits. And they wouldn't grant us more because we hit the limit. 'We'd get people respond like, ''Please leave me alone and never email me''. We'd still respond again. 'I really feel the greatest lesson from this is vulnerability is not embarrassing. Yes, our cold email outreach template was awful at first, and it was a complete flop, but I've connected with some of those people now, and they were like, ''Good for you for reaching out in college.''

3,500 AI-enabled cameras to guard Delhi under 'Safe City' project from October 1

From October 1, Delhi will activate 3,500 AI-enabled cameras as part of the 'Safe City' project to boost policing and women's safety. Equipped with facial recognition, gunshot sensors, and real-time alerts, the system aims to enhance surveillance, rapid response, and accountability across high-risk and densely populated areas. Remove Ads Come October 1, Delhi's streets will have over 3,500 activated Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras, gunshot sensors and alert systems under the first phase of the 'Safe City' project aimed at transforming the functioning of police in the national capital, an official said on with Artificial Intelligence Video Analytics (AIVA), the system will issue real-time alerts on incidents like shootings, crimes against women, stolen vehicles and abandoned move comes nearly two years after the horrific Kanjhawala incident on the night of December 31, 2022, when a 20-year-old woman was dragged for over 12 km by a car in outer Delhi. The incident shocked the nation and prompted a massive review of surveillance gaps in the city."After the Kanjhawala case, the Ministry of Home Affairs directed us to audit vulnerable areas. We found that around 10,000 additional cameras were needed. This project is being implemented in phases and will cover high-risk and densely populated zones first," a senior police officer the first phase, a total of 3,500 cameras will go live, drawn from a larger pool of 6,121 bullet cameras, 1,622 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, 370 Facial Recognition System (FRS) cameras, and 1,876 Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) the project includes 200 gunshot detection systems -- each comprising three acoustic sensors -- and 300 public address systems (speakers). These will be strategically installed to provide real-time alerts and enable public communication during emergencies."These are not just passive CCTV cameras. They are intelligent systems with AI-based video analytics. The system will instantly alert our Integrated Command, Control, Communication and Computer Centre (C4i) at police headquarters when it detects any abnormal activity," the officer alerts will also be forwarded simultaneously to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) offices and local police stations. This tiered structure will ensure faster response and the heart of the Safe City project is the goal of strengthening women's safety. The AI software in these cameras is programmed to flag high-risk scenarios such as a woman being isolated and surrounded by a group of men, or a woman waving her hands seeking help."Both scenarios will automatically trigger high-priority alerts. A nearby PCR unit will be dispatched without waiting for a formal complaint. This is proactive policing," the official with high concentrations of women residents, such as hostels, PG accommodations, college campuses and workplaces, are being prioritised for deployment. Locations known for frequent cases of harassment, snatching and eve-teasing are also being mapped and covered under this surveillance system will also monitor crowd gatherings and alert authorities to potential flashpoints. If more than 50 individuals are detected congregating at a location not designated for public assembly, a high-priority alert will be generated.A gathering of fewer than 50 people will be flagged as a low-priority addition, the technology will track abandoned objects, detect gunfire, and scan for hotlisted vehicles or ANPR cameras will be able to identify stolen, suspicious, or blacklisted vehicles in real time, while FRS cameras will match faces against a police database of over 20,000 known case of a gunshot, the acoustic sensor will immediately relay the direction of the sound, prompting a PTZ camera to pan and zoom toward the source, offering investigators a real-time visual."Once an alert is received, the operator at C4i will verify its authenticity. If genuine, it is assigned a priority level, and the nearest patrol unit is mobilised. If the alert is found to be false, it is dismissed with proper reasoning," the officer system is also designed to serve as a force multiplier for the Delhi Police. By capturing high-definition, time-stamped visuals of incidents, the footage will offer evidentiary support in court and help in post-incident officers will be able to review how on-ground personnel responded to situations, helping improve accountability and operational effectiveness."It's a training tool as well. Officers' performance in crisis situations can be reviewed to improve responses in future. This is not just about technology, but also about transforming the way we police the city," the officer first phase is expected to dramatically change how Delhi Police monitors and responds to crimes in public remaining two phases of the project are expected to be completed by the end of 2026, eventually bringing the entire capital under the lens of AI-backed surveillance.

Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's only aircraft carrier, set to be scrapped after years of setbacks

Russia appears on the brink of officially retiring and scrapping its only aircraft carrier, the troubled Admiral Kuznetsov , marking a historic turning point for the Russian Navy . After years of costly, accident-ridden refits and modernization efforts, Russian officials are now openly discussing abandoning the decades-old warship, which has been plagued by mechanical failures, fires, and missed deadlines. The Admiral Kuznetsov , launched in 1990 and commissioned in 1995, has served as the flagship of the Russian Navy for nearly three decades. However, its operational history has been marred by chronic breakdowns and high-profile accidents. The carrier's inefficient Mazut-fueled engines produced thick black smoke, making it easily visible at sea and requiring frequent maintenance. Its endurance was limited to just 45 days, and it often needed tugboat escorts during deployments due to the risk of mechanical failure. Since July 2018, the Kuznetsov has been confined to dry dock for an ambitious overhaul that has been anything but smooth. The ship suffered a deadly fire in 2019, a crane collapse on its flight deck, and persistent delays due to technical problems and alleged embezzlement of original plan was to return the carrier to service by 2022, but the timeline slipped repeatedly, with the latest projections suggesting a possible return in 2025—a goal that now looks increasingly unlikely. Suspension of repairs and scrapping talks According to Russian state media and sources cited by Izvestia (national newspaper of Russia), work on the Admiral Kuznetsov has been suspended, and high-level discussions are underway between the Russian Navy's High Command and the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) about whether to officially retire and scrap the vessel. The ship has not seen active service since 2017, and even if repairs were completed, many experts believe it would be hopelessly outdated compared to modern naval threats. Admiral Sergei Avakyants, former commander of the Pacific Fleet, publicly stated that retiring the Kuznetsov is 'absolutely the right move,' calling it 'a very expensive and ineffective naval weapon.' He argued that the future of naval warfare lies with robotic systems and unmanned aircraft, not traditional aircraft carriers. Live Events The scrapping of the Admiral Kuznetsov would leave Russia without an operational aircraft carrier for the first time since the Soviet era , effectively making it a 'no-carrier' navy. While some Russian analysts and officials argue for building a new, modern carrier—potentially equipped for drone operations—there is skepticism about whether Russia can afford such a project, especially given the ongoing war in Ukraine and competing military prioritie
