'When I was a kid, if I heard the word 'sixty,' that just sounded like an old-lady grandma with dentures,' Brooke Shields told me over Zoom one morning. 'It sounded so terrifying to me, like, 'Ew, that's old.' And to be here now and feel the freedom of it, it's kind of amazing.' Shields, who turned 60 just a couple of weeks before our call, should know. After a literal lifetime in the public eye — she landed her first gig, an Ivory soap ad, at 11 months old — the actress, author, model, podcaster, and current president of Actors' Equity Association is arguably busier than ever. She launched Commence, a hair-care line for women over 40, in June 2024. Her latest book, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman, came out this past January. And to celebrate the big 6-0, she posed — some might say fearlessly, but she might say joyfully — in a bikini on Instagram. 'It's a lot more positive than people anticipate it being,' she said about her current phase of life. 'It's so much more of a celebration than it is to be feared.'
