Major Cambuslang housing development nears completion

The landmark eight-year project from Persimmon Homes West Scotland has delivered 443 new properties. A major development in Cambuslang that is set to leave 'a lasting, positive legacy in the area' is nearing completion. Castle Gardens is wrapping up after nearly a decade of delivery, providing hundreds of new homes, jobs and significant community investment for the town and South Lanarkshire. ‌ The landmark eight-year project from Persimmon Homes West Scotland has delivered 443 new properties, and the sales of its final homes have just been made. ‌ As part of the development, 57 of the 443 homes were transferred to South Lanarkshire Council to help local people in housing need. Since construction began, the development has contributed over £2.6 million in investment to support local infrastructure and services, including education, roads, public transport, affordable housing provision and community facilities. The project has supported the local economy by creating a number of direct jobs, along with additional roles in the local supply chain. It has also played a vital role in developing local talent, with more than 10 apprentices gaining valuable on-site experience throughout the build. Among them is Lee Brooks, whose work helped shape the community – and whose family now proudly call Castle Gardens home. As part of Persimmon's commitment to the communities it builds in, thousands of pounds have been donated to local charities and groups, including the Whitlawburn Resource Centre and Friends of Cambuslang Park, through the company's Community Champions initiative. ‌ Craig Moore, land director at Persimmon West Scotland, said: 'Castle Gardens is a great example of how long-term development, when delivered thoughtfully, can transform a site and bring real benefits to local people. 'We're proud of the homes we've delivered here and the strong partnerships we've built with community groups, local businesses, and South Lanarkshire Council over the past decade.' Castle Gardens has played a key role in helping meet local housing need, particularly for first-time buyers and families, with Persimmon's homes typically priced 20% below the average for new builds in Scotland. * Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Rare chance to walk through Gatcombe Park and Avening Court estates

RARE access to two private estates in Minchinhampton is being granted for a charity walk. Horsfall House Hospice's annual event, set for Sunday, June 8, will allow participants to explore Gatcombe Park Woods and Avening Court. The estates, which are rarely open to the public, are being made accessible especially for the event. The 10-mile route begins at Minchinhampton Library, with check-in starting at 9.30am. The last entry to Avening Court will be at 3pm. For those preferring a shorter distance, an alternative return route is available after Avening Court. Toilets, drink stations and refreshments will be available at various points along the walk. Participants are required to register before setting off, with online pre-registration encouraged to ease queues on the day. Financial support for the event can be given through donations, either on the day or via the Horsfall House website. Participants can also raise sponsorship or choose to sponsor one of the hospice's Community Champions. All funds raised will directly support Horsfall House's work with elderly people in the community. The event is a significant fundraiser for Horsfall House, with 100 per cent of the money raised going towards the hospice's work with elderly people. A shuttle bus service will be available for those needing transport from Minchinhampton Library to Avening Court, and back via Avening Social Club. Soccer-Bayern Munich beat Man United to win maiden women's W7F title

* Bayern Munich beat Man United to win inaugural women's W7F * PSG clinch third place over Manchester City * Tournament features $5 million prize pool May 23 - Bayern Munich came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Manchester United and claim the inaugural women's World Sevens Football title in Estoril, Portugal on Friday. Matches in the $5 million prize-pool tournament consisted of two 15-minute halves on half-sized pitches, with golden goals in extra time for tiebreakers. Simi Awujo gave United the lead in the 14th minute with a brilliant shot into the top corner, her third goal of the tournament. Bayern equalised in the second half when Momoko Tanikawa scored with a left-foot strike, and Sarah Zadrazil clinched the victory four minutes from time with a powerful shot. "It was such an important goal. So I just ran to the teammates that couldn't play because we are all one big family and it was also for them that we are champions now," Zadrazil said. The tournament, featuring elite European clubs including Manchester City, Paris St Germain, AS Roma, Sweden's FC Rosengard, Ajax Amsterdam and Benfica, culminated in a final-day showcase including two semi-finals, with PSG beating City 3-1 to take third place. The event launched two social initiatives 'Community Champions', awarding $10,000 grants to three local non-profit organisations, and 'Rising 7's', aimed at countering the trend of girls dropping out of sports during adolescence.

Big names, bold mission: W7F to kick off women's soccer series with a social twist

Big names, bold mission: W7F to kick off women's soccer series with a social twist LISBON - World Sevens Football (W7F) isn't just rolling out a $5 million women's soccer tournament in Portugal next week — it's launching twin social drives, "Community Champions" and "Rising 7's", which, it says, are aimed at tackling gender gaps in football. The Rising 7's initiative will directly target the well-documented phenomenon of girls abandoning sports during adolescence, organisers say. Nearly 100 under-13 players will participate in clinics at Estoril Praia Academy, receiving coaching from former stars including Tobin Heath, Laura Georges and Caroline Seger. "Participation in sports is a powerful avenue for girls to build confidence," said Aly Wagner, W7F's Head of Strategy and former U.S. international. Community Champions will provide $10,000 grants to three local non-profits - CAIS, Fundacao Benfica, and Girls for Girls Portugal - organisations working to increase girls' access to football and advance women in the sport. The social programmes complement W7F's core offering - a fast-paced tournament featuring eight professional clubs competing for the largest prize pool in women's club football history. Following Portugal, the series will expand to North America later in 2025, organisers say. Eight of Europe's biggest clubs — including Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam — will battle for the inaugural tournament from May 21-23. Featuring lightning-fast 15-minute halves, a half-sized pitch and rolling subs, the women's seven-a-side showdown promises fireworks, with $2.5 million awaiting the winners. The format sees teams split into two groups before a final-day shootout. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
