Elderly Athlone Park resident falls victim to assault and car theft

THREE SUSPECTS are still at large after they assaulted and robbed a 72-year-old Athlone Park resident of his car on August 7. Police spokesperson Captain Charlene van der Spuy said that the victim was working in his garden before the incident took place. A case of house robbery is being investigated by Amanzimtoti detectives. The same suspect forced the victim to the ground and started assaulting him. The other two suspects demanded his car keys. The suspects fled with his vehicle,' said Van der Spuy. Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) said in a social media post that the incident occurred around midday. 'The suspects also robbed a garden service of their equipment as they were leaving,' alleged CCPO in the post. Residents were fuming and took to the Facebook comment section to air their frustrations. Christine Pillay said, 'I won't live in a stand-alone house ever again. I stayed in Athlone Park and was broken into on our second day living there.' Paula Viljoen echoed similar sentiments: 'We lived in Athlone Park for 55 years. Due to being attacked on various occasions, the house has been sold.' For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. CCPO Christmas gift appeal for guards kicks off

THE annual CCPO Christmas Gift Appeal has officially kicked off, with longtime organiser Reena Solomon once again calling on Amanzimtoti residents to show their appreciation for the dedicated security personnel who help keep the community safe. Also read: Christmas Gift Appeal wows Amanzimtoti crime-fighters Now in its 11th year, the campaign aims to raise funds for festive gift cards for the Community Crime Prevention Organisation's (CCPO) supervisors, guards, and foot patrollers. These individuals work around the clock throughout the year, often under difficult and dangerous conditions, to protect residents and businesses in the area. 'It's that time of year again. Every year, I ask the community to assist in making Christmas extra special for our hardworking CCPO team. They go the extra mile, come rain or shine, and deserve a gesture of thanks from all of us,' said Solomon. Although Christmas is still months away, Solomon has launched the drive early to give donors more time to contribute in smaller amounts, easing the financial burden. She hopes to gift each CCPO member a Galleria Mall shopping voucher, allowing them to spoil their own families during the festive season. 'No donation is too small. Every bit counts. Let's show our gratitude and support to those who sacrifice so much for our safety,' she said. All donations collected will go directly toward purchasing the gift cards.
