Celebrations culminated in a concert and parade at Laman MBPJ, near its headquarters. Guest of honour, Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, noted that Petaling Jaya played a significant role in ensuring success of the state's development initiatives. 'Petaling Jaya has demonstrated its commitment to realising initiatives related to digital transformation, economic empowerment, environmental recovery and green development, as well as efforts to enhance the people's well-being,' said Jamaliah, who is also Bandar Utama assemblyman. Also present were Seri Setia assemblyman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah, Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Pua Pei Ling, Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon and deputy mayor Aznan Hassan, alongside MBPJ senior management and councillors. The celebration comprised 30 events, with highlights including a parade competition offering RM6,000 in cash prizes to the top three winners, concert featuring local artistes, cat show, sports events such as PJ 10km Run, PJ Tower Run and Petaling Jaya Mayor's Community Cup football tournament, and PJ Strata Convention and Strata Excellence Award 2025. 'Various initiatives were offered to residents as a token of appreciation for their continued support towards the city's development,' MBPJ's Corporate Communications Unit said in a statement. 'These included free on-street parking throughout the city and free access to public facilities such as swimming pools, courts and sports fields under MBPJ. 'In line with MBPJ's commitment to making Petaling Jaya a beautiful, clean and sustainable city, 1,000 tree saplings were distributed to the public. 'Abate, a larvicide used to prevent the breeding of mosquito larvae, was also handed out for free as a proactive step in combating dengue.' MBPJ also offered free memberships to PJ Community Library, while hampers were handed out to five 'City Babies' born on June 20 at two private hospitals. Petaling Jaya was upgraded to city status on June 20, 2006, the second after Shah Alam. Some of its milestones include being ranked among top 10 cities worldwide in Unesco's Learning City Award 2019 and the first local authority in Malaysia to be recognised by Unicef as a child-friendly city in 2023. PJ Eco Recycling Plaza was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records in 2025 as the first environmental sustainability centre run by a local authority.
