Summer campaign launched to stop bike and car thefts in New Forest

A summer campaign to tackle theft in the New Forest has been launched. Visitors and residents are being urged to take their possessions with them to prevent opportunistic car and bike thefts. The campaign, which kicked off this month, uses posters, leaflets, digital adverts, petrol pump ads, and social media to spread messages to bikers and drivers. Tourists and locals are also being warned not to leave any valuables or belongings in their vehicles. Officers will be focusing on car parks and campsites, engaging with the public to highlight the issue and offer tips on safeguarding their belongings. Councillor Dan Poole, portfolio holder for community, safety, and wellbeing, said: "New Forest District Council, through our community safety partnership of Safer New Forest, are keen to ensure residents and visitors follow these positive steps. "As a partnership, we continue to invest in and provide free bicycle marking schemes to deter incidents of theft and, where stolen, have property returned to its owner." READ MORE: Police and council outline plans to combat anti-social behaviour in Shirley The campaign is supported by New Forest District Council, Camping in the New Forest, and Forestry England, with signage and posters on display for tourists visiting for hiking, cycling, or camping. Officers will patrol beauty spots, collaborating with local businesses to provide resources and advice. Vehicle and bike security checks will be carried out, with advice given to those lacking adequate security. Chief Inspector Scott Johnson, New Forest district commander, said: "The New Forest is a safe and welcoming place to visit all year round, but we're working closely with partners and the community this summer to see a reduction in bike theft and theft from vehicles on previous years. "We want to encourage all tourists and residents to take simple steps to protect their bikes and secure their vehicles to greatly reduce the chances of their possessions from being stolen." Bike theft often occurs when bikes are not securely locked with a robust mechanism or are not registered. Theft from motor vehicles usually happens when items, even non-valuables, are left inside, or doors are left unlocked and windows open.

WorkSafe Victoria charges justice department over Malmsbury youth centre riot

Worksafe has charged the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety over a riot at the troubled Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre. The charges relate to an incident in October 2023 where a youth justice worker and several young people were assaulted at the centre. The department faces two charges: failing to provide and maintain a safe working environment, and failing to ensure people other than workers were not exposed to health and safety risks. The ABC has previously reported on multiple assaults against staff and young people at the centre, which was decommissioned in December 2023. The state government has been contacted for comment.

UAE President issues federal decree-law establishing National Anti-Narcotics Authority; appoints Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan as Chairman

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has issued a federal decree-law establishing the National Anti-Narcotics Authority and appointed Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan as its Chairman. This step aims to strengthen the national ecosystem for combating narcotics, and unify the federal and local effort in this regard, to ensure the safety of the UAE community and its members. The new Authority - established to replace the General Department of Anti-Narcotics in the Ministry of Interior – is an independent federal entity affiliated to the UAE Cabinet. The Authority is tasked with formulating and implementing policies, legislation, and strategies to combat narcotics, as well as tracking and dismantling smuggling and distribution networks in coordination with relevant authorities at both federal and local levels. The National Anti-Narcotics Authority will undertake a comprehensive set of vital mandates, reflecting the UAE's strategic vision to bolster community security, combat various drug-related crimes, and ensure an effective legislative and operational environment to curb this phenomenon. A key mandate includes tackling drug trafficking by tracking and dismantling smuggling and distribution networks, coordinating with security and judicial authorities to ensure offenders are brought to justice in accordance with the nation's laws. The Authority will also focus on developing and refining public policies, legislation, and strategies related to combating narcotics and the emerging crime patterns associated with them. It will establish the necessary legislative and regulatory frameworks, submitting them to the Cabinet for approval, ensuring alignment with international best practices and addressing the evolving challenges in this field. In order to prevent the entry or exit of narcotic substances into or from the country, the Authority coordinates with the relevant national entities to monitor, inspect, and track individuals, goods, and transportation at land, sea, and air entry points, in accordance with its authority and the applicable laws. It will continue monitoring any activities and operations suspected of involvement in drug smuggling or trafficking, in collaboration with the concerned authorities, strengthening the UAE's ability to anticipate and swiftly address these threats. In addressing the circulation of materials and substances that may be used in the manufacturing of drugs or antinarcotics, the Authority is tasked with proposing and establishing regulations and conditions for handling "chemical precursors" used for non-medical purposes. This includes developing licensing mechanisms, trading and storage conditions, and customs clearance procedures, in coordination with the relevant entities and submitting these to the Cabinet for approval, ensuring lawful use of chemicals and preventing their misuse in illegal activities. To strengthen coordination between federal and local entities, the Authority will create and manage a national centralised database, accessible to all federal and local entities working on combating narcotics in the UAE. The database will enhance response to crisis, facilitate information exchange, and advance the efficiency of the national policies and strategies in the matter.

Crackdown on illegal mining: 478 miners arrested amid rising crime concerns

More than 470 illegal miners were arrested on Friday during Operation Vala Umgodi at a mine in Barberton. Image: SAPS Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie has welcomed the arrest of about 478 illegal miners by police on Friday during Operation Vala Umgodi at a mine in Barberton. He said the mass arrest augurs well for the government's endeavours to fight and prevent crime. The arrested miners are allegedly undocumented foreign nationals. Macie believes the illegal movement of people into the country negatively impacts the safety and security of communities and the resolution of crime cases involving undocumented foreign nationals. This, according to the MEC, contributes to increasing numbers of undetected crime cases. He further acknowledged the devastating impact of illegal mining activities and long-term effects on the environment. "We welcome the efforts by the police and all role players involved in Friday's operation. However, we also want the police to apprehend those who are behind illegal mining. Communities should refrain from accommodating zama-zamas but rather report them to the police, " he said. Video Player is loading. The Mpumalanga department of community safety, security and liaison said arrested men may face charges for contravening the Immigration Act, trespassing, and other offences related to illegal mining.. The arrested men are expected to appear in court soon. In March, IOL reported that at least 33 illegal immigrants between the ages of 18 and 45 suspected to be dealing in illegal mining were arrested during Operation Vala Umgodi in Pilgrim's Rest, Mpumalanga. Amongst the suspects, five were women while 28 were men. At the time, provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said during the arrest, police discovered that the suspects were in possession of mining equipment which was a sign that they were allegedly involved in illegal mining activities.
