Retiree gives back with heart
When Nelson Mandela famously said, 'What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others,' he may as well have been describing Venetia Reyners.
At 57, the Boksburg retiree has found her second calling, not in comfort, but in community service. For the past few months, Venetia has volunteered at the Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre, an NPO uplifting vulnerable residents through food drives, youth empowerment and social support.
'Helping others shouldn't just happen on Mandela Day or during Mandela Month. We have 24 hours in a day; it's what we do with those hours that truly matters. Use them with kindness.'
Venetia said her journey began shortly after retirement. Used to a busy life, she found herself restless at home and craving something meaningful.
'I just felt like I was wasting away doing nothing. When I joined the Community of Hope, it felt like I could breathe again. I've never been this happy. I am part of a group of dedicated volunteers who prepare meals, help organise food parcels, support educational initiatives and bring a sense of dignity and care to struggling families in the community.
'What struck me is how much need there is right here in our own communities. You don't have to be rich to help. You just need heart,' she explained.
For Venetia, every day represents an opportunity to give back not just in memory of Mandela, but also in the spirit of his values.
'Madiba taught us that it's not about how much you have, but how much you give of yourself. If everyone gave just one hour a day to someone else, imagine the kind of world we'd live in.'
The Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre has welcomed her with open arms, and she's now a vital part of their mission. Her message to others is simple but powerful: Don't wait for July. Start today.
'Volunteering gave me purpose and joy. And it reminded me that retirement isn't the end, it's a new beginning.'
