The Minister held a consultation with the heads of private and government medical and dental colleges. The admission process would commence early to enable scrutiny of the applications diligently. In the previous years the government had waited until the declaration of NEET and as a result there was not much time to scrutinise the applications, resulting in errors, he explained. Candidates must include their NEET registration number while filling in the applications. The final merit list will, however, be based on the results provided by the National Testing Agency. Candidates have been given the opportunity to wait till the declaration of NEET results. Such candidates must apply within five days of declaration of NEET results, the medical education has decided. Mr. Subramanian has instructed private medical and dental colleges to be transparent about the fee structure, giving a break up of the various components, such as tuition and hostel fees and any other amount that is being collected. Earlier in the day the Minister launched training programmes for health care workers. There is no reason to panic over COVID 19 infection, health minister M. Subramanian said here on Wednesday. Until Tuesday 216 persons have been diagnosed with COVID-19 infection and they are getting better. Those who have been infected are being monitored, the minister said. To remain safe people have been advised to wear masks in crowded places to avoid contracting infections. A person who has been diagnosed with COVID 19 infection and dies is tested for various other parameters as well to identify the cause of death. 'We do all the investigations including for COVID 19. The person may have died of other underlying causes and COVID 19 infection may have been an incidental finding,' health department officials said at a media briefing here on Wednesday on the sidelines of launch of training programme for health workers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and fatty liver disease. The field workers will raise awareness about the diseases and those who have them would be urged to get screened at primary health centres. The health department has also planned to launch 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin' in a fortnight in Chennai, the Minister announced. Under the scheme people can seek master health check-ups nearer to home. At the camps people can also get the required persons with disabilities certificates, persons can also get their cards under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Across the state 1,256 camps will be held by December-end.

SHG members in Virudhunagar district urged to renew their insurance policies

Virudhunagar Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan has appealed to all registered women's self-help group members and their family members in the district to renew their insurance policies by May 2025 and avail themselves of benefits. The insurance policies were aimed to provide financial security for SHG members, who are often vulnerable to unexpected events such as accidents, disabilities, and deaths. The Collector emphasised the importance of enrolling in insurance schemes offered by the Union and State governments, especially under the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihoods Mission (TNSRLM). Many poor and vulnerable families in both rural and urban areas of Virudhunagar face permanent income loss when an earning member suffers injury, disability, or death. Insurance plays a crucial role in helping such families recover and sustain their livelihood. All SHG members have been advised to enroll in or renew schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY). Mr. Jeyaseelan reiterated that dissemination of information on social security and insurance schemes is crucial to safeguarding the economic stability of SHG households.

Use free service to detect oral, cervical, breast cancers: DPH chief Dr T S Selvavinayagam

CHENNAI: The general public must not miss the opportunity of cancer screening available in primary health centres and health sub-centres for early detection of the disease, advised Dr T S Selvavinayagam, Director of Public Health and Preventive Health (DPH). In a video message on Saturday, the DPH appealed to people above 18 years of age to screen for oral cancer and women above 30 years to screen for breast and cervical cancer. Oral cancer screening should be done yearly, whereas breast and cervical cancer screening can be done once in three years. Since cancer cases have been rising, with diagnoses often made at an advanced stage, the government is now holding an organised screening programme, said Selvavinayagam. If diagnosed at an advanced stage, the damage may be severe, but if diagnosed early, it may be completely treatable, and the person can lead a normal life. The training is given at the village health nurses' level, who will map areas and invite people for screening to primary health centres and health sub-centres. Even if diagnosed with cancer, people can get treatment free of cost at government hospitals and also at private hospitals using the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, Selvavinayagam added. Health Minister Ma Subramanian had launched an extension of the community cancer screening programme at Tiruvallur on May 12. The programme was launched on a pilot basis in 12 districts: Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Tiruvarur, Dharmapuri, Karur, Tiruchy, Vellore, Theni, Madurai and Thanjavur.

Govt. hospital in Tiruchi to get PET scan centre soon

The installation of a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan will begin within three months at the superspeciality block of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi, authorities said on Monday. 'We have got the approval from the Directorate of Medical Education and Tamil Nadu Medical Service Corporation to lay the groundwork for the PET scan centre. This is part of our effort to develop a full-fledged oncology block that will serve patients more effectively,' a senior official at the hospital said. He told The Hindu that ₹140 crore had been sought under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK). Staff for the PET scan centre, including medical and radiation oncologists, would be deputed from other institutions. 'The diagnostic equipment need space and radiation safety, so we will begin planning the civil works accordingly within a few weeks,' said the official. 'At present, MGMGH sees approximately 1,500 in-patients every month (both for screening and with the disease). In terms of surgical performance, there are roughly 25 to 30 major surgeries and 40 to 50 minor procedures performed each month. Last year, 404 cancer surgeries were carried out while 326 patients received radiotherapy treatment,' said the official. Lack of facilities Sources said every month, 60 to 70 cases from MGMGH are referred for radiotherapy and chemotherapy to Thanjavur Medical College and other centres like Madurai. 'Those needing and undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy for cancer are already prone to infection. Besides this, patients' attenders tend to lose their earnings during travel to these centres. This has made it imperative for Tiruchi GH to develop its own full-fledged oncology block,' said the official. Free cancer screening camps were launched in Tiruchi district's health centres last week, for people aged above 18. The camps will be testing for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and oral cancer with the aim of raising awareness about treatment and rehabilitation of survivors. 'The camps have created a new momentum in improving cancer care. MGMGH will be aligning with the district health authorities in providing solutions after the screening. Though PET scans are available through Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme in private centres, the common man, especially people from economically weaker sections of society, would prefer to reach out to a public healthcare facility for such crucial tests,' said the official. 'We are extending the working hours of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan centre, so that results can be shared with the patient within three days, rather than 10,' he added. A site behind the ESI Hospital is being considered for the proposed oncology block at MGMGH.
