Use free service to detect oral, cervical, breast cancers: DPH chief Dr T S Selvavinayagam
In a video message on Saturday, the DPH appealed to people above 18 years of age to screen for oral cancer and women above 30 years to screen for breast and cervical cancer. Oral cancer screening should be done yearly, whereas breast and cervical cancer screening can be done once in three years. Since cancer cases have been rising, with diagnoses often made at an advanced stage, the government is now holding an organised screening programme, said Selvavinayagam.
If diagnosed at an advanced stage, the damage may be severe, but if diagnosed early, it may be completely treatable, and the person can lead a normal life. The training is given at the village health nurses' level, who will map areas and invite people for screening to primary health centres and health sub-centres. Even if diagnosed with cancer, people can get treatment free of cost at government hospitals and also at private hospitals using the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, Selvavinayagam added.
Health Minister Ma Subramanian had launched an extension of the community cancer screening programme at Tiruvallur on May 12. The programme was launched on a pilot basis in 12 districts: Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Tiruvarur, Dharmapuri, Karur, Tiruchy, Vellore, Theni, Madurai and Thanjavur.

SJM/Norms relaxed, residents of registered homes for the mentally ill to be enrolled under CMCHIS
All inmates of registered homes for the mentally ill will be enrolled under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) without requiring the mandated ration card and income certificate. Issuing an order to this effect, the State government permitted the Project Director of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) to enrol all inmates in registered homes under CMCHIS without the mandated ration card and income certificate, subject to satisfying the criteria prescribed in Government Order 16 dated January 8, 2022 [on continuation of implementing CMCHIS with effect from January 11, 2022 to January 10, 2027 through United India Insurance Company at a premium of Rs. 849 per family per annum]. The government sanctioned Rs. 51,05,896 for the enrollment of 5,944 inmates in 108 homes under the Welfare of the Differently Abled Persons Department without the need for the two documents. It was at the sixth monitoring committee meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary in early 2024 that it was decided to issue orders to approve issuance of CMCHIS cards to inmates residing at homes for the mentally ill in the absence of other individual identity cards such as ration card, income certificate that are mandated as eligibility criteria for enrolment under the scheme. Listing out the mental health establishments in the State, the Health department noted that there are a total of 54 government-run and an equal number of NGO-run homes for mentally ill persons in the State. There are six halfway homes - one with the Institute of Mental Health and five with the Welfare of the Differently Abled Persons Department. There are eight government-run and eight NGO-run Emergency Care and Recovery Centres in the State. Officials said that providing CMCHIS coverage for persons with mental illness residing at mental health establishments would help them get medical or surgical treatment that they required in both government hospitals and empanelled private hospitals. 'There may be inmates who suffer from cardiac ailments requiring bypass surgery or stenting, or from fractures or hernias or medical management for any illness,' an official said, adding that one of the highlights measures taken was to do away with the need for the mandated documents to enrol under CMCHIS. Doctors said that most of the residents do not have social support, and relaxation of these norms would facilitate access to immediate medical care especially in emergencies. It may be recalled that in mid-2022 a total of 520 residents of IMH were brought under CMCHIS after the State government relaxed these norms.

CMCH surgeons perform rare limb salvage surgery
COIMBATORE: The orthopaedics department at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) performed a complex limb salvage surgery on the shoulder bone of a 57-year-old man. M Eswaran of Moongiltholuvu village near Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district was admitted to CMCH in July with a swollen left shoulder, which was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma that had metastasized from oesophageal cancer. Dr S Vetrivel Chezian, director of the Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, said metastasis is common in the knee bone and the joints of the lower limbs, such as the thighs. He added that the typically diagnosed age group is young adults around thirty. He said, "The foremost factor is its rare occurrence in the upper part of the body, followed by age. Usually, when tumours are encountered at the secondary stage, that particular portion gets paralysed. But Eswaran's arm movements were intact. That's why we decided to save the bone and do a custom-made prosthesis on the left shoulder. Almost 15 cm of the prosthesis was inserted, retaining the patient's elbow bone and the rest of the limb bone. ' The surgery was multidisciplinary. 'This is the first such case in CMCH so far. Nalam Kaakkum Stalin camps in Tiruchi benefit over 4,500 residents
The Nalam Kaakkum Stalin health camps organised in Tiruchi have been receiving a good response from the public. Officials say that many have benefited from the initiative, which aims at providing free medical check-up and treatment to people. The camps offer a wide range of services, including general health screenings, specialist consultations, diagnostic tests, and the distribution of free medicines. Under the scheme, three camps were planned within the Tiruchi Corporation limits. So far, two have been conducted, with about 4,514 people benefiting from them. According to official sources, the second camp, held on August 9 at Kattur, saw 2,426 people register — 976 men and 1,450 women. Of these, vitals were recorded for 1,000 individuals, ECGs conducted for 896, and diagnostic samples collected from 942. Notably, 112 pregnant women underwent echocardiogram (ECHO) tests. 'Expectant mothers from Kattur and Tiruverumbur had complete health check-up, especially ECHO scans, which are otherwise available only at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, located far from these areas. We identified high-risk pregnant women due for delivery within the next three months, who will now be closely monitored,' said M. Vijay Chandran, City Health Officer. A significant number of cataract cases were identified, with affected individuals referred to hospitals for surgery, he said. Similarly, about 2,088 have registered and availed check-ups at the camp held on August 2 at K.A.P. Viswanatham Higher Secondary School in Thillainagar. In addition to medical services, the camps catered to individuals with disabilities. So far, 558 persons with disabilities have been clinically screened and issued disability certificates. Of these, 94 have been allocated benefits under welfare schemes. Around 100 people were issued identity cards under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). Welfare cards were distributed under several government departments, including Labour Welfare and Skill Development, and Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Departments.
