Lorde Reflects on Body Image Struggles & Eating Improperly ‘For Weeks' Ahead of the 2021 Met Gala

This year's Met Gala was a very different experience for Lorde than the last time she attended the event in 2021. In a vulnerable voice note sent to fans Tuesday night (May 6), the pop star opened up about having overcome her issues with body image in the four years since she last walked the Metropolitan Museum of Art red carpet, revealing that last time she was there, she'd unhealthily restricted her eating for weeks in preparation. 'I didn't eat properly for weeks thinking about my little tummy on that carpet.' This year, Lorde attended once again, sporting a chic slate Thom Browne look that matched the 2025 theme of 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.' Returning to the Met four years later, the singer said it was 'moving' to be back in the same place with an entirely new mindset regarding her body. 'I was there last night fully in myself, and I didn't have to not eat, I didn't have to go to the gym a million times,' she told her fans. 'I was just fully in myself. Quite beautiful.' Lorde has slowly been sharing more and more about her struggles with eating and body image in the lead-up to her new album Virgin, which arrives June 27. On lead single 'What Was That,' released in April, she sings, 'I wear smoke like a wedding veil/ Make a meal I won't eat.' In a recent interview with Document Journal, the New Zealand native elaborated on the lyric: 'I had made my body very small, because I thought that that was what you did as a woman and a woman on display … I thought, 'I'm small. This will communicate to people that I'm taking my position seriously.'' Now, Lorde says she feels fully 'embodied,' meaning this year's Met — which took place one day prior to her voice note — was a much better experience. 'It was definitely my favorite Met,' she said in her message before remarking, 'It's really a reality check of where you're at in relation to, you know, your own public image and how you feel in your body, how you feel among your peers and how you feel in culture and all that sort of stuff.' One moment from Monday night (May 5) that did make her 'so cringed out' at herself, though, was when she commented that her dress was an 'Easter egg' in an interview with Vogue correspondent Emma Chamberlain, leading fans to believe the singer was teasing something musical through her attire. 'More will be revealed,' she'd added during the red-carpet chat. 'To me it really represents where I'm at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman, kind of vibe.' But in her voice note, Lorde clarified, 'Just as it was leaving my mouth, I was like, 'What are you talking about? No, it's not [an Easter egg]. The language of Easter eggs, I love it as a concept … [but] for what I was referring to, it was not my vibe,' she said. 'Please accept me feeling like a loser, I'm sure you don't care at all.' Dance Moves: Beyoncé's ‘Renaissance' Surges After Tour Kickoff, Gryffin & PinkPantheress Debut Songs

Billboard's Dance Moves roundup serves as a guide to the biggest movers and shakers across Billboard's many dance charts — new No. 1s, new top 10s, first-timers and more. This week (on charts dated May 10), Beyoncé, Gryffin, PinkPantheress and others achieve new feats. Check out key movers below. More from Billboard Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter Tour Setlist: Every Song From the First Show Daddy Yankee & Snow's 'Con Calma' Hits 3 Billion Views on YouTube back number's 'Blue Amber' Bows at No. 1 on Japan Hot 100 Beyoncé's 2022 LP Renaissance rises 8-5 on the Top Dance Albums chart, earning 6,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the April 25-May 1 tracking week (up 26%), according to Luminate, as the superstar kicked off her Cowboy Carter Tour April 28 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. While the setlist primarily highlights her 2024 country album Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé included several Renaissance tracks during the tour's first three shows (all at SoFi), including 'America Has a Problem,' 'My House,' 'Cuff It' and 'Alien Superstar.' The album wasn't Beyoncé's only beneficiary: Her entire solo catalog sports gains following the tour's launch. Her catalog raked in 57 million official U.S. streams during the tracking week, up 18% from the 48.3 million streams the week before. Cowboy Carter had the largest gains and surges 193-64 on the Billboard 200 with a 73% increase in units. Gryffin, Excision and Julia Michaels' new collaboration, 'Air,' debuts at No. 25 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, fueled entirely by its 620,000 first-week streams. The track arrived April 25 via 10K Projects. 'Air' earns Gryffin his 38th career entry on the chart, and his second of 2025, after 'In My Head,' with Kaskade and Nu-La, peaked at No. 15 in February. It also becomes Excision's 10th entry and Michaels' fifth. PinkPantheress lands her second entry on the Hot Dance/Pop Songs chart with 'Stateside.' Released April 25 on Parlophone/Elektra/Atlantic Records, the track debuts at No. 11 and joins her previous single, 'Tonight,' which ranks at No. 13 after debuting at No. 5 in April. Both songs are set to appear on her second mixtape, Fancy That, a nine-track project due out Friday (May 9). PinkPantheress previously charted two tracks on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs: 'Way Back' with Skrillex and Trippie Redd (No. 13 in January 2023), and Kaytranada's 'Snap My Finger,' on which she's featured (No. 40 last June). Her breakthrough collaboration with Ice Spice, 'Boy's a Liar, Pt. 2,' climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 2023. MEDUZA, Innellea and GENESI's 'Edge of the World,' featuring Nu-La, debuts at No. 33 on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, marking the highest new entry of the week. It gained by 33% in plays among 24/7 dance reporters and pop stations' mix show hours. The release marks a milestone for Italian house group MEDUZA, which scores its 10th career entry and first since 'Another World,' with HAYLA, hit No. 1 in December, becoming the act's third leader. It's also the first entry for both Innellea and GENESI and the second for Nu-La, whose 'In My Head,' with Gryffin and Kaskade, rises to a new No. 14 high. In a fun twist, the chart's second-highest debut is the similarly titled 'End of the World' — Miley Cyrus' latest single. It enters at No. 35 with a 30% gain in plays, becoming her 12th career hit on the chart. PinkPantheress Says Hitting Pause on Music Last Year Was ‘For My Own Good'

PinkPantheress is ready to step back into the spotlight after taking a few months to herself. You might recall that last August the 24-year-old British singer born Victoria Walker canceled all of her remaining 2024 tour dates — including festival shows and slots opening for Olivia Rodrigo and Coldplay — to focus on her physical health after saying she'd 'hit a wall.' Now, in a new interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, the singer says that despite the pushback from her team on hitting pause when things were really starting to hit for her she knew it was the right thing to do. More from Billboard Dance Moves: Beyoncé's 'Renaissance' Surges After Tour Kickoff, Gryffin & PinkPantheress Debut Songs Daddy Yankee & Snow's 'Con Calma' Hits 3 Billion Views on YouTube back number's 'Blue Amber' Bows at No. 1 on Japan Hot 100 '100%. But not even just because things are rolling, but more because of financial reasons why,' she told Lowe. 'If you agree to do shows and you don't follow through, there's a lot of money being missed out on. There's also a lot of… the opportunity for backlash to be. Really the least of my concerns, was the money.' Pantheress said she's naturally someone who is prone to not looking after herself in an effort to 'push through' difficult times, which has caused problems in the past. 'And that's honestly one of the reasons I lost my hearing this ear because of that,' said the singer who in 2022 called off a performance at Spain's Primavera Festival due to 'partial hearing loss' that left her 80% deaf in her right ear. 'So after that happened, I don't know what it was. I think it was when I started cutting my hair with razor blades where I realized, you know what? I'm actually going to stop now.' The singer who moved to Los Angeles two years ago and now spends her time bouncing between L.A. and London debuted a chopped bob earlier in January and told Lowe that when she cut her hair off she had an epiphany. 'I was like, 'you know what? I'm going to probably take a step back and chill,'' she said. 'And I'm not someone that generally… I don't really suffer with any kind of lapse in judgments when it comes to myself usually, but that's when I knew… I had an impulse to literally get follicles of hair off of me. So I needed to… I was full up.' That's whey she made a decision to step out of the spotlight, something she has no regrets about. 'There was something that I needed to address and so I had to leave,' she said. 'And I did that for my own good. And obviously it was a very sad moment for people that wanted to see me but couldn't see me. But obviously, what goes around comes around, and I'll be back again.' At the time she hopped off the tours, PinkPantheress told fans, 'It is with the heaviest heart that sadly have to announce that i will not be able to continue with the rest of my live shows this year in order to focus on my physical health and overall wellbeing. It appears i have reached a wall which i am struggling to penetrate through. this will include my GUTS tour, Field Day, Summer Sonic, FORM, III Points, and Australia/NZ appearances.' In January, she was featured on Shygirl's 'True Religion' single, which she followed up in April with her own songs, 'Tonight' and 'Stateside,' which will appear on her upcoming nine-song sophomore mixtape Fancy That, due out Friday (May 9). Piers Morgan Explains Why Ye Cut Their Interview Short: ‘He Went Into a Great Theatrical Strop'

Ye (formerly Kanye West) stormed off the set of a contentious interview with Piers Morgan on Tuesday (May 6), and the Uncensored host has provided some context about why Yeezy pulled the plug on the combative, short-lived chat. Morgan hopped on X on Wednesday (May 7), where he claimed that West and his team were giving him the run around leading up to the interview. 'He was costing us time and money,' Morgan said. 'And my patience was almost running out.' More from Billboard Daddy Yankee & Snow's 'Con Calma' Hits 3 Billion Views on YouTube back number's 'Blue Amber' Bows at No. 1 on Japan Hot 100 j-hope Says BTS Experienced 'Growing Pains' While Working on Solo Music Amid Military Service After getting the go-ahead to conduct the interview, Morgan says the conversation got off to a rocky start when Morgran addressed Ye as 'Ye West,' which the rapper took issue with since he's trying to lose his 'slave name.' 'I did talk to him for about three minutes,' Morgan said. 'When I asked him how he was, he pointed to the backdrop behind him. Actually a pleasant backdrop, this time of Mallorca, which implied he was in a great place. I said, 'You seem happy and content. Which is a direct contrast to what is going on with you on social media.'' Morgan then got West's follower count on X wrong, which upset the rapper. The host said Ye had 32 million followers when, in actuality, Ye has compiled just over 33.3 million followers as of press time. 'At that point, he went into a great theatrical strop. It's not 32 million — it's 33 million,' Morgan recalled. The interview came to a halt as Ye got up and left, leaving Sneako to deal with a frustrated Piers Morgan. 'You're not gonna take inches off my di–, bro.' the Chicago native said before he left the interview. 'I'm a gift, bro. Why do all you people in media act like you haven't played my songs at your weddings, or graduations or at funerals or when your child was born?' He continued: 'You take someone like that's living, like a [John] Lennon or a Michael Jackson. That nuance right there is idiotic. It just shows the hate that you put out for people that put out love. There's so much love in the art that I put out. This is what you get for now, we can circle back when you can count.' Morgan referred to Ye as a 'sniveling coward' and proceeded to pepper Sneako with questions about Yeezy's recent tirades on X that have included antisemitic remarks and praise for the likes of Hitler and Diddy. Generate Key Takeaways Daddy Yankee hits a new milestone as the music video for his hit 'Con Calma,' featuring Canadian rapper Snow, coolly crosses the three-billion-view mark on YouTube. The animated visual, packed with electrifying dance moves and reggaetón flow, marks the Puerto Rican superstar's second video to hit that milestone, following the 2017 chart-topping smash 'Despacito.' Released in January 2019, the 'Con Calma' video showcases an animated version of The Big Boss leading the charge on a brightly lit dance floor, surrounded by synchronized dancers who bring the infectious beat — courtesy of Play-N-Skillz and David 'Scott Summers' Macias — to life. A reimagined take on Snow's 1992 classic 'Informer,' the visual creates a party-like atmosphere that continues to attract an ever-growing audience. More from Billboard On the Billboard charts, the smash hit entered various listings, including topping Hot Latin Songs, Latin Airplay and Argentina Hot 100. In February 2019, the remix featuring Katy Perry reached the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 22, further extending the track's global success. In October, Billboard reported that Concord acquired Daddy Yankee's music catalog in a deal valued at $217 million. The Latin hitmaker — whose Barrio Fino was the first reggaetón album to debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart in 2004 — released his trap-infused single 'En el Desierto' earlier this year. He also featured on the 2024 Peacock documentary, Reggaeton: The Sound that Conquered the World, also starring Ivy Queen, Bad Bunny and more. Feel like adding another view to 'Con Calma'?
