Ex-Pentagon lawyer Christian Urrutia joins race for 1st Congressional District

There's another Democrat running in the open seat race for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District. Christian Urrutia lives in Moultonborough and now serves as an executive at the vacation rental company Airbnb. Before that, Urrutia worked as a lawyer in the Biden Administration and for several international law firms. In the video announcing his bid, Urrutia, who grew up in Hudson and describes himself as the son of immigrants, took aim at both President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders in Washington for practicing a brand of politics in which money and insider connections warp outcomes for average Americans without making things like housing, health care and childcare more affordable. 'We have a system where influence is hoarded by the few, while the consequences fall upon the many,' Urrutia says in the video. 'Insiders profit — everyday people pay the price. I'm not running for Congress to join that game. I'm running against it. There'll be many good Democrats in this race, but familiar names and the politics of yesterday aren't enough to meet the moment. We need to do better.' Urrutia, who serves as a captain in the New Hampshire Army National Guard, joins a crowded Democratic primary that already includes former Portsmouth city councilor Stefany Shaheen, who is the daughter of Sen. Jenanne Shaheen; New Hampshire Democratic Party Vice Chair Maura Sullivan of New Castle; and Hampton selectboard member Carleigh Beriont. State Rep. Alice Wade of Dover has formed an exploratory committee. The race for the 1st District is wide-open, after Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas decided to run for the U.S. Senate seat that Jeanne Shaheen will retire from next year. Pappas has represented the 1st District for four terms, but Republicans here and in DC believe it's a seat their party could retake. Chris Bright, a businessman and veteran who ran in the 2024 GOP primary and finished in fourth place, is so far the only Republican to enter the race, but others are considering it. Former State Sen. Brett Lindstrom running for Congress in Nebraska's 2nd District

Former State Sen. Brett Lindstrom of Omaha, who has entered the race to be the GOP candidate for Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District. (Zach Wendling/Nebraska News Service) LINCOLN — Former Omaha State Sen. Brett Lindstrom has entered the race to be the Republican nominee to defend the Republican held 2nd Congressional District open seat. 'I'm running as a common-sense conservative to protect retirees and fight for working families … focused on the future and national security,' Lindstrom said. Lindstrom, 44, on Monday became the second Republican to join the race. He was long rumored to be one of the GOP candidates to jump into the Republican primary if Rep. Don Bacon chose not to run again in 2026. Omaha City Council Vice President Brinker Harding announced his bid last week. Bacon's 2024 GOP primary challenger, Dan Frei, is mulling a bid. Lindstrom emphasized that he doesn't 'really get caught up' in who's in the race, but looks forward to people getting to know him and the other candidates, then deciding the best candidate to represent them. Lindstrom said he is a 'proven candidate' with a 'proven record' of getting things done. The former state lawmaker who represented northwest Omaha in the Nebraska Capitol from 2015 to 2023 said he has a track record of a 'pragmatic' and 'common-sense' approach. Lindstrom was known for pushing bills that reduced state income taxes. He also voted to repeal the death penalty in the state, which was reinstated through a ballot measure in 2016. Lindstrom pointed to his role in passing legislation that phased out taxes on Social Security income. He said he wants to bring that to the Hill. President Donald Trump's recently passed 'big beautiful bill' does provide new temporary tax deductions for Social Security, but it doesn't eliminate the tax on the federal program. Lindstrom, a financial advisor, said he has been able to 'meet the challenges' the district faced during his time as a state senator, and is looking to 'continue to do that.' He said he wants to bring a different kind of leadership to Washington, an approach focused on 'real results, not partisan fights, because that's what Nebraska deserves.' He was one of the Republican lawmakers in the officially nonpartisan statehouse to survive the 2018 'blue wave.' This would be Lindstrom's fifth campaign for elected office – he unsuccessfully ran to be the Republican nominee for governor in 2022. Most of his support during that bid came from Omaha. The 2nd Congressional District is the state's most politically diverse and competitive — and could prove one of the most expensive races in Congress for the 2026 midterms. Democrats already have a crowded field in the primary. Omaha political action committee co-founder and business owner Denise Powell and Omaha State Sen. John Cavanaugh have announced bids. Democrats Mark Johnston and Evangelos Argyrakis are also running. Douglas County District Court Clerk Crystal Rhoades, a Democrat, has said she is considering a House bid. Lindstrom has endorsements from State Sen. Rita Sanders of Bellevue, State Sen. Christy Armendariz of Omaha and former State Sen. Tom Brewer of Gordon. Harding has the endorsements of U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, former Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, and State Sen. Kathleen Kauth of Omaha. He also received the endorsement of former Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert, who endorsed Lindstrom for governor in 2022. Lindstrom said his time in the Nebraska Legislature has given him the experience to handle the 'complexity' of Washington. 'The message and [my] work ethic will speak for itself,' he said. James Walkinshaw wins Democratic contest to likely replace US Rep. Connolly in northern Virginia

FAIRFAX, Va. — Democrats and Republicans chose candidates in northern Virginia on Saturday who will vie to replace the late U.S. Rep. Republican Chris Bright to run for NH US House seat in 1st District

DERRY — Chris Bright, an Army veteran and businessman, announced June 24 he is running for the U.S. House seat representing New Hampshire's First Congressional District in 2026. Bright, a Derry resident, will seek the Republican nomination for the second consecutive primary election. In 2024, he finished fourth in the GOP primary won by Russell Prescott, who lost the general election to incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas, a Democrat. 'We need fewer keyboard warriors and more mission-driven leaders,' Bright said in a prepared statement. 'I accomplished my mission, regardless of the obstacles and circumstances in places like Bosnia and Kosovo, and built a national company — through a global pandemic — all while raising a family. This country has its challenges and I am tired of the fighting and dysfunction. There is a better way and I'm running to lead smarter and secure the future for our children and grandchildren." Pappas is running for Senate in 2026, creating a race without an incumbent. Bright is joined so far in the campaign by three Seacoast Democrats seeking their party's nomination: Maura Sullivan of New Castle, a Marine Corps veteran and former Obama administration staffer, former Portsmouth City Councilor Stefany Shaheen, who is the daughter of U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, and Carleigh Beriont, who serves on Hampton's Select Board. Bright said his discipline, pragmatism, and results-oriented leadership set him apart. 'Congress is full of people who point fingers, push blame, seek power and chase headlines,' Bright said. 'That doesn't fix the border, balance the budget, or rebuild our economy. It's time to send someone to Washington who knows how to solve real problems and isn't afraid to take the heat to stand up and serve the interests of Granite Staters and the American people."
