US Congressmen support India's right to respond to terrorism

A group of US Congressmen on Wednesday expressed unequivocal and bipartisan condemnation for the Pahalgam terror attack and extended support for India's right to respond to terrorism in the spirit of zero tolerance against terrorism. The lawmakers also hailed the strong strategic partnership between India and the US during a meeting with an all-party delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who briefed them on the cross-border terrorism faced by India and the country's strong and resolute stance in the fight against terror. 'Bipartisan co-chairs @RoKhanna & @RepMcCormick and vice co-chairs @RepAndyBarr & @RepVeasey of India Caucus in the House of Representatives met with the visiting Parliamentary delegation led by @ShashiTharoor today,' the Indian Embassy said in a post on X. The parliamentary delegation briefed the Caucus members on the cross-border terrorism faced by India and New Delhi's strong and resolute stance in the fight against terror, it said. 'The Congressmen expressed unequivocal and bipartisan condemnation for the terror attack in Pahalgam. They expressed support for India's right to respond to terrorism in the spirit of zero tolerance against terrorism,' the Indian mission said. The all-party delegation also held candid and fruitful exchanges with House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) leadership. 'Chair @RepBrianMast, Ranking Member @RepGregoryMeeks, South and Central Asia Subcommittee Chair @RepHuizenga, Ranking Member @RepKamlagerDove, Ranking Member @RepBera and East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee @RepYoungKim greeted the delegation,' the Indian Embassy said in another post on X. The parliamentary delegation briefed the committee members on the success of Operation Sindoor in defining a new normal in India's fight against cross-border terrorism. The committee leadership condemned the Pahalgam attack unequivocally and said India and USA stand together in their unwavering resolve and fight against terrorism in all its forms. The delegation is one of the seven multi-party delegations India had tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. Other members of the delegation are Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), Ganti Harish Madhur Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), Tejasvi Surya (BJP) and India's former Ambassador to the US Taranjit Sandhu. The delegation has travelled to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and Brazil before arriving in Washington on the last leg of its tour. In its interactions in the US, the delegation will convey India's resolve against terrorism and emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. Speaking to PTI, delegation member Deora said that the group in the US, as well as those visiting other regions and countries, is telling the world that 'India has had enough.' He said that every country they visited so far 'issued very unequivocal, I would almost say, unconditional, statements in favour of India.' 'We want to live in peace. We would prefer it if we have a stable neighbour. Nobody wants an unstable lunatic living next to you,' he said. Another delegation member Surya told PTI that there is absolutely no sympathy towards Pakistani-originated terrorism. The countries the delegation visited have 'very clearly understood why India was constrained to respond militarily in the way it did, and have supported India's counterterrorism measure.' On a Pakistani delegation arriving in Washington the same day, Deora said, 'There is no doubt in anyone's mind in the United States that Pakistan is a banana republic, a failed state, a terror exporter, a country where the civilian government has no power, (it's) the army that controls the power. So I don't think that it matters to India that there's a Pakistani delegation trying to play copy and paste.' Surya also said that it was not the 'first time that the Pakistanis tried to copy India in what India tries to do, but they end up a cheap copy.' He said that the world has long observed what India stands for and what Pakistan stands for. Investing in India, he said, is seen as an investment in democracy, responsible civilian leadership and global progress. On the other hand, he noted that every terrorist attack in the last 20-30 years that has rocked the world has had investigations directly or indirectly leading to Pakistan. He added that over 50 UN-designated terrorists have formed a safe haven in Pakistan. 'So the narrative of a country like Pakistan cannot be salvaged by an accented English speaking suit-wearing ex-foreign minister. Pakistan's hands are too full in blood to be washed away by this overnight drama,' Surya said. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.

Washington, DC [US], June 5 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading the all-party parliamentary delegation to the US, met with Bipartisan co-chairs Ro Khanna and Rich McCormick, as well as vice co-chairs Andy Barr and Marc Veasey, on Wednesday. Tharoor said that US Congressmen had very strong support and understanding for India's position on the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the events that followed. Speaking to reporters, Tharoor said that McCormick was very upbeat about the future of India-US ties, the economy and global strategic issues. After meeting Khanna, McCormick, Barr and Veasey, Tharoor said, 'Mr McCormick is not only understanding of what we had to tell him, but he was very upbeat about the future of India-US relations across the board, the economy, global strategic issues, and so this particular problem we started off discussing was part of a much larger picture, which we are very excited to hear the kind of vision that the India Caucus chairs have for the future of our relationship.' Tharoor also talked about the support received by the delegation from other Congressmen. He said, 'A strong message from the other Congressmen who are also here, who just left the room. So, we've had very strong support and understanding for our position on this terrible, terrible tragedy (Pahalgam attack) and the events that followed. So, we're leaving this room very happy with the conversation.' During the meeting with Ro Khanna, Rich McCormick, Andy Barr, and Marc Veasey, the parliamentary delegation briefed the Caucus members on the cross-border terrorism faced by India and India's strong and resolute stance against terrorism. The delegation led by Tharoor comprises Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum, reflecting India's vibrant and inclusive democratic character. The delegation comprises Sarfaraz Ahmad, Ganti Harish Madhur, Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Tejasvi Surya, and former Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu. The Indian Embassy in the US said that Congressmen expressed strong support for India's right to respond to terrorism in the spirit of zero tolerance against terrorism. The Caucus members hailed the strong strategic partnership between India and the US. In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in the US stated, 'Bipartisan co-chairs @RoKhanna & @RepMcCormick and vice co-chairs @RepAndyBarr & @RepVeasey of India Caucus in the House of Representatives met with the visiting Parliamentary delegation led by @ShashiTharoor today.' They expressed support for India's right to respond to terrorism in the spirit of zero tolerance against terrorism. The Caucus members also hailed the strong strategic partnership between India and USA,' it added. The all-party delegation led by Shashi Tharoor reached Washington DC earlier today to begin a two-day engagement with key US stakeholders. The Indian Embassy in the US posted on X from its official handle that the delegation will meet members of the US Congress, including the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, House Foreign Affairs Committee. The delegation will also hold discussions with academicians from leading think tanks and various media outlets. The delegation is scheduled to speak at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington, D.C., with the event being streamed live on the CFR website. Additionally, the delegation will interact with members of the Indian diaspora during their visit, further strengthening community ties. The delegation aims to brief key stakeholders in the US on Operation Sindoor, India's diplomatic initiative launched to counter terrorism and disinformation following recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. In a post on X, Tharoor described his journey to Washington as a 'horrendous, three-stage overnight journey' from Brasilia via Sao Paulo and Panama, during which he managed only one and a half hours of sleep. Upon arrival, he was pleased to be greeted by two Indian-American police officers, Harmanpreet Singh and Hundal. Tharoor recorded an interview with CBS News at the Indian Embassy, followed by a briefing with Ambassador Vinay Kwatra and his team. The delegation reached the US after concluding their visit to Belgium. The diplomatic effort is part of India's broader global outreach following Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 as a military response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, which claimed 26 lives and injured several others. Subsequently, the Indian Armed Forces carried out strikes targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists affiliated with groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. LoP Rahul Gandhi moves Jharkhand HC to quash Non-Bailable Warrant issued by Chaibasa court

Ranchi: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has approached the Jharkhand High Court seeking cancellation of a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) issued against him by the MP-MLA special court in Chaibasa in connection with a 2018 case over alleged derogatory remarks against then BJP National President Amit Shah. The NBW was issued on May 22 after LoP Rahul Gandhi failed to respond to earlier court summonses. The Chaibasa court has directed him to appear in person on June 26. LoP Gandhi's legal counsel has argued in the High Court that a petition filed under Section 205 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) -- which seeks exemption from personal appearance in court -- is still pending before the same court. Therefore, the issuance of a NBW while the exemption plea remains unheard is premature and legally inappropriate, the petition contended. The case stems from a complaint filed by Chaibasa resident Pratap Katiyar on July 9, 2018. According to the complaint, Gandhi allegedly stated during a Congress session that, "No murderer can become the national president in the Congress. Congressmen cannot accept a murderer as the national president -- this is possible only in the BJP." The remark was seen as a veiled reference to Amit Shah, who at the time was the BJP's National President. In response to the complaint, the Chaibasa court had initially issued a bailable warrant in April 2022. However, LoP Gandhi reportedly did not respond to the summonses. Subsequently, a NBW was issued in February 2024. His legal team filed an application seeking an exemption from personal appearance, which was rejected by the trial court. Following this, Rahul Gandhi had moved the Jharkhand High Court, which granted him temporary relief. But with the matter still pending, the lower court's latest issuance of a non-bailable warrant prompted the LoP to file a fresh petition in the High Court.

No diversion of funds from any dept for Ladki Bahin scheme: Fadnavis

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis clarified on Thursday that no funds from any govt department were diverted towards Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin scheme. A section of ruling party leaders as well as the opposition had criticized the state govt for alleged diversion of funds from key departments to sustain the scheme. "The Ladki Bahin scheme is of individual interest. If any funding is made for such a scheme, the money has to be disbursed from the exchequer to that particular department, such as tribal welfare, social justice or other departments. This is the method of accounting for the state's annual budget. Those who fail to understand should come to me as I have already written a book on how to read the annual budget," Fadnavis told newspersons at Parbhani. He said funds for tribal people and scheduled castes, among other weaker sections, need to be reserved as per their percentage of population, but schemes of individual interest get priority while reserving such funds. "Deputy CM Ajit Pawar (who is also the finance minister) has already offered elaborate explanations on the issue," the CM said. Fadnavis, who was in Parbhani to lay the foundation of the new Government Medical College and Hospital, among other public works, also addressed a public rally in which he announced that the state govt would soon launch as many as 1,200 public services on WhatsApp. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "Right from paying money towards these services to getting the desired documents, everything will be on WhatsApp. We are committed to transparent, pro-people, and speedy governance," he said. Referring to the FDI data released by the RBI, Fadnavis said that Maharashtra had alone bagged 40% of the total investment in the country. "FDI attracted by Maharashtra is more than such investments in Karnataka and Gujarat among other states taken together. Even foreign investors have reposed faith in the double engine govt in Maharashtra and made our state their first choice," he said. Fadnavis also criticised Congress for allegedly raising doubts over 'Operation Sindoor'. "Minds of Congressmen have become 'Pakistan occupied' just like PoK. They are raising doubts over the bravery of our armed forces," he said. The CM said Indian armed forces destroyed nine terror hideouts and killed 150 militants, including family members of terrorist leader Masood Azhar within "23 minutes". Earlier, addressing an event at Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University in Parbhani, Fadnavis said that honorary scientist awards will be given to farmers engaged in successful farming and cropping experiments. Court Issues Non-Bailable Warrant Against Rahul Gandhi In Defamation Case

Ranchi: The MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, has issued a non-bailable warrant against senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a 2018 defamation case. The court has directed Rahul Gandhi to appear in person on June 26. The case stems from alleged derogatory remarks made by Rahul Gandhi during a Congress party event in 2018, in which he is accused of making disparaging comments about the then-BJP National President, Amit Shah. According to the complaint filed by Pratap Katiyar, a resident of Chaibasa, Mr Gandhi had remarked that "no murderer can become the National President in Congress. Congressmen cannot accept a murderer as the National President, this is possible only in the BJP." The complainant viewed this as a defamatory statement directed at Amit Shah and lodged a complaint on July 9, 2018. In April 2022, the Chaibasa court had initially issued a bailable warrant against Rahul Gandhi after no response was received. However, when Mr Gandhi failed to respond, the court escalated the matter and issued a non-bailable warrant in February 2024. Mr Gandhi's legal team sought an exemption from personal appearance in the Chaibasa court, but the plea was rejected. The Congress leader subsequently approached the Jharkhand High Court, which granted him interim relief and stayed the warrant for several months. However, in March 2024, the High Court disposed of the petition, paving the way for the trial to proceed in the lower court. Following the resumption of hearings, Mr Gandhi's counsel again requested exemption from personal appearance, which was once again turned down by the Chaibasa court. A defamation case against Rahul Gandhi is also going on in the Sultanpur court. On May 17, the hearing in the case could not take place as there was a workshop for lawyers. He had appeared in person in the Sultanpur court in July last year. This defamation case is also related to Rahul Gandhi's remarks against Amit Shah.
