Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School's Mary Connellan remembered after death
Don't miss out on the headlines from North. Followed categories will be added to My News. A teacher, librarian and archivist at a leading girls' school has been remembered as a 'wise and generous spirit' following her death last week. Mary Connellan, 76, died last Friday after a 30-year distinguished career at Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School. Ms Connellan began her career at Ivanhoe Girls' in 1972 as a maths and science teacher, before she was promoted to science co-ordinator in 1973. She returned to the school in 1994 as the head of library, where she remained for 15 years. In a letter sent to the school community, principal Narelle Umbers said Ms Connellan was 'instrumental' in developing the school's information literacy skills program. 'In this role, she excelled in creating the true heart of the school — not once, but twice,' Ms Umbers said. 'First, in the Doris Walker Centre, and later, as she planned the library in the Cooerwull Centre, where her vision was instrumental in providing a wonderful facility to support the learning of current and future students.' After retiring from her library role, Ms Connellan became the school's archivist, where she remained until 2021. Ms Umbers said she developed the archives into a 'wonderful collection of textiles, photographs and memorabilia that protects and enhances the school's history so it can be enjoyed for generations to come'. 'Mary had an abiding love for the school and a profound knowledge for its history and community. 'She developed friendships with her colleagues that spanned decades.' Ms Connellan was awarded the Cooerwull Service Award in 2019 for 30 years service to the school. Ms Umbers remembered her late colleague for her 'wise and generous spirit, sparkling intelligence and wonderful sense of humour' and said she was a joy to work with. 'She will be very sadly missed,' Ms Umbers said. Ms Connellan was survived by her husband Geoff, son Duncan, daughter Jacqueline and granddaughters Georgia, Sienna and Madeleine. A funeral will be held for Ms Connellan on Friday June 6 at 12pm in Warrandyte.

Mum-of-four pressured into holding drugs for gangs now a ‘born-again Christian'
She told the judge that she had been struggling with anxiety at the time of the offence, but that she is now doing much better. 'I'm a born-again Christian,' she said. A mother-of-four who said she was pressured by criminal groups to hold drugs in her home and was "living in fear" has told a court that she is now a born-again Christian. Lisa Lyons, of Mac Uilliam Grove, Tallaght, Dublin 24, appeared before Judge Michael Connellan at Tallaght District Court on Friday, May 2, in relation to a search carried out at her home by Garda Nicky Cleere on November 15, 2021. During the search, gardaí discovered a handbag hidden inside a larger bag. The court heard that inside were nine individual bags of cannabis weighing 29g, along with €508 in cash. Tallaght district court. News in 90 seconds - 10th May 2025 The 36-year-old pleaded guilty to the possession of cannabis for sale or supply, contrary to Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and unlawful possession under Section 3 of the same Act. The court heard Lyons has six previous convictions, all road traffic offences, but has no history of drug offending. She was represented by Ethan Foley BL, who said his client had been placed under significant pressure by certain groups to hold the drugs and had been living in fear. 'There's no sign of any wealth in her home,' he told the court, adding that Lyons had no previous involvement in drugs and had cooperated fully with gardaí. 'Is it fair to say this is a once-off?' Judge Connellan asked. Mr Foley agreed, citing Lyons' relatively clean record, difficult personal circumstances and the fact that she had been living in fear at the time. The court was told Lyons is a full-time mother and that one of her children has special needs, while she also volunteers with the DSPCA. She told Judge Connellan that she had been struggling with anxiety at the time of the offence, but that she is now doing much better. 'I'm a born-again Christian,' she said. Mr Foley asked the court to be as lenient as possible, before Judge Connellan imposed a fine of €600 with seven months to pay. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme
