Donegal deliver crowning performance against Meath in the All-Ireland SFC semi-final

This All-Ireland semi-final was effectively over when Jim McGuinness called Michael Murphy ashore in the 45th minute, a clear acknowledgement that the job was done. There were still eight points in it at that stage, 1-15 to 0-10, but Donegal were in a menacing mood and all the signs pointed to more misery for Meath ahead. With relentless running power they picked holes in Meath's cover all afternoon and off the platform of Shaun Patton's booming kick-out in the second half they really went to town on the summer's surprise packages, handing them a dose of reality at this level after wins earlier in the season against Dublin and Kerry and more recently an All-Ireland quarter-final over Galway. Meath just couldn't defend the Patton kick-out and two of Donegal's three goals after the break came directly off it. On 42 minutes, Caolan McColgan got in behind to set up Oisín Gallen who, after a right battle with Seán Rafferty in the first half, stepped outside to beat Billy Hogan with a rasping shot off his left. Photo by Daire Brennan/Sportsfile And on 58 minutes, they repeated it with Meath misjudging the length again to allow Patrick McBrearty, substitute Jason McGee and Gallen to create an opening for Conor O'Donnell for a 3-21 to 0-13 lead. In between those goals, Donegal's pace on the break was best exemplified when they got a turnover deep in their own half and surged forward through Peadar Mogan, Shane O'Donnell, and Ryan McHugh to put in Ciaran Moore for a 2-16 to 0-11 lead. Meath mistakes multiplied as they struggled to find any fluency against the tide of wind-supported Donegal attacks. They simply couldn't live with the speed of the Donegal movement. They had been hanging on for dear life in the opening half when, with wind benefit, they still trailed by 0-13 to 0-8. Donegal had goal chances, with Michael Murphy shooting over for a point off his left from close range and Hugh McFadden being denied by Hogan at different times. Meath hunted two-pointers but were wide with four efforts and with another two dropping short, it felt like a tactic that has served them well all season deserted them. Jordan Morris, star of their quarter-final win, was well shackled by Brendan McCole and finished with just one point from four shots. Meath really struggled with their kick-out in the first half, retaining just eight from 19 and that was the source of so many Donegal attacks. Meath's 15 wides didn't help, while another three dropped short, but they were outclassed here in a manner that was sobering and the scale of the defeat will take a little bit of the shine off some of their earlier achievements. After a period of congestion Donegal have rediscovered strong form and players like Shane and Conor O'Donnell, McHugh, Ciaran Moore and midfielder Michael Langan really hurt Meath. Murphy finished with 0-6, including a two-point free, before he went off while his replacement McBrearty chipped in with three points.

Donegal cruise into All-Ireland final with 20-point victory over Meath
Donegal 3-26 Meath 0-15 FOR THE FIRST time in 11 years, and for only the fourth time in the county's history, Donegal will be part of the duo contesting on All-Ireland final day. They qualified for that showpiece with one of the great semi-final displays of power, pace and scoring touch as they cruised past Meath with 20 points to spare. They lost their imposing midfielder Bryan Menton through injury in the 20th minute, while the nine wides they amassed and the one shot dropped short, captured the tale of a team who were forcing shots and struggling to hit full speed in attack. Donegal power past Louth into quarter-finals
It took a while, but Donegal eventually put their experience to use in MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey, as they eased through to the All-Ireland quarter-finals with a 16-point win over Louth. The Wee County put it up to Donegal in the opening half, but a second goal from Ciaran Thompson on 49 minutes put the home side on their way. Thompson, playing in his 50th championship game for the county, took a crossfield pass from Oisin Gallen to find the corner of the net. The score put Donegal 2-11 to 0-09 ahead and from there the Louth challenge faded and the home side were able to keep the scoreboard ticking, finishing with 12 different scorers. The large attendance of 15,369 were not give much to shout about in the opening half as both sides played it cagey. Donegal were really lacklustre in what was a very poor spectacle in the opening half. Peadar Mogan, as happens often, opened the scoring and Donegal looked to be in control after 15 minutes, leading by 0-5 to 0-1, Conor O'Donnell, Oisin Gallen, Michael Murphy and Finnbarr Roarty adding to their total. Paul Matthews had the lone Louth point. Craig Lennon added a second point while Donegal had a great goal opportunity which Oisin Gallen spurned. The miss seemed to inspire Louth and especially Ryan Burns as he hit three points in as many minutes to tie up the game on 24 minutes. Gallen and Dara McDonnell traded scores before Donegal got the goal they threatened. It came from a long kick-out by Shaun Patton which found Oisin Gallen and he sent Conor O'Donnell through to fire to the net. Donegal did have possession as the hooter sounded but Louth turned them over and Ryan Burns hit the last score of the half to leave just two between them - Donegal 1-06 Louth 0-07. Sam Mulroy opened the second half account for Louth with a free but they only managed one more score (Mulroy from play) until the 62nd minute and by that stage Donegal were able to substitute Michael Murphy, Ryan McHugh and Eoghan Bán Gallagher. There will be tougher tests ahead for Donegal, who had 11 wides, while several shots dropped short. Donegal hammer Cavan by 19 as Michael Murphy and co run riot at Breffni
IT'S level pegging across Group 1 of the All-Ireland SFC round-robin, with Donegal running in a 19-point victory over Cavan at Breffni Park. Donegal hadn't it all their own way for spells to begin with, put things together to post a 19-point victory at Breffni Park, with goals from Finnbarr Roarty, Conor O'Donnell and Coalan McColgan. Now, Donegal are on a collision course with Mayo, whilst Cavan and Tyrone will both want to pick themselves up against one another. Donegal went to Breffni Park as the only side in the group without a point, following Mayo's 2-17 to 1-14 victory against Tyrone in Omagh on Saturday night. As against Tyrone, Donegal goalkeeper Shaun Patton, who twisted his ankle in the Ulster final victory over Armagh, did the warm-up. But as against Tyrone, it was Gavin Mulreany who got the nod with Conor O'Donnell and Caolan McColgan also late changes, in place of Daire Ó Baoill and Oisin Gallen. Most read in GAA Football Cavan exited the Ulster SFC at the quarter-final stage, 1-24 to 0-20 against Tyrone. A 2-17 to 1-14 success in Castlebar and two weeks' preparation, compared to Donegal's one meant there was an air of optimism around Breffni Park. Seven minutes before the break, with Donegal 0-9 to 1-5 up, a lovely Ryan McHugh pass got Finnbarr Roarty in on goal, only for Liam Brady in the Cavan goal to save. Murphy slotted over the 45, his second of the half, bringing his total to five. Donegal passed up on a second goal chance when Michael Langan was played in by Shane O'Donnell but the shot was straight at Brady and Cavan survived again. The temperature rose sharply just before half-time when McGuinness made his way over to his opposite number, Galligan, to remonstrate after Dara McVeety, in the Donegal manager's opinion, went down too easily. Full of voice, both ended up in referee Fergal Kelly's book. The row did spark the crowd into life, with Donegal's travelling support to be heard in full voice and their decibel level went even higher when, after the hooter and in the last play of the half, Roarty made no mistake when he was given a second goal chance. Donegal moved it and moved it fast with Shane O'Donnell, Murphy, then McBrearty, laying off to Roarty, who planted past Liam Brady for a goal, which made for a lead of 1-12 to 1-5. Although Cavan had the wind, Donegal teams are never shy about moving it ball in hand and could take Oisin Gallen off the bench, to score three points. In all, 13 Donegal players got on the scoreboard as four wides early in the third quarter hit Cavan's hopes. Conor O'Donnell, like Roarty, almost got a goal before he actually did, when he palmed over a Mogan centre but the Carndonagh man placed a splendid second goal on 62 minutes to move Donegal 2-22 to 1-11 ahead. By then, eight minutes before, Murphy had left to a standing ovation. And like the first half, Donegal managed a goal when the hooter had gone. Caolan McColgan, with Cavan fans headed towards the exit, smashed high into the net with Shane O'Donnell providing the assist. Cavan-Donegal TV info, throw-in time and more for All-Ireland football clash
Cavan and Donegal face off as part of a bumper weekend in the All-Ireland Football Championship round robin. Group 1 also contains Tyrone and Mayo who lock horns this Saturday. By the time these two teams throw in, the situation will be clear in the group. It's been a while since these teams last met, with the 2022 Ulster semi-final being the last time they clashed.
