The Cute Mascot of Epic Universe Brings Vibes, but Not Much Else

Celestial Park may serve as the hub for Epic Universe, but it gives the lore of Epic Universe a charming personality of its own. While there's no franchise crossover to be found here like the other zones of the new park, it does have its own theme, inspired by fantastical astrological storytelling, that gives the star-adorned land 'celestial decor from the '90s' vibes in the best way. It's as if Universal opened up its notebook and scribbled a tale to create a realm of fantasy delights and interstellar adventure, complete with new walk-around characters, to contain its gateway to all the portals to the park's other lands. But even if there's not much beyond that to the area, it does include the whimsical tale of a chocolate shop bear that stole our hearts. Captain Cacao is the lovable teddy bear companion to Maya of the Skies, a young adventurer who traverses the universe to find treats to share at Moonship Chocolates & Celestial Sweets, one of several stores throughout Celestial Park. Atop the shop you see the gorgeous artwork that brings you into the spacey comfort of the clouds and night skies—the same ones you can see riding Celestial Park's main attraction, Constellation Carousel, a whimsical ride that really elevates the dreamlike atmosphere of the area's constellation motif. But while the shop is filled with the usual theme park sweet treats, the thing you'll want to walk away the most with is Captain Cacao himself in teddy bear form. I'd say he's hand down the cutest of all theme park bears, with a spot over his eye in the shape of a star and his midnight blue coloring. But, bad news: even before the park's official opening today, he's already sold out. Or, at least he was during the media preview we attended, and during Universal's own public preview days for Epic Universe. Poor Captain Cacao in his fluffy form was nowhere to be found, much like How to Train Your Dragon's hatchling eggs in Isle of Berk—the cutest merch is already sold out, showing us what the clear favorites at the park are going to be. You could satisfy your Cacao craving with some other merchandise, like backpacks and other fashion accessories, but in teddy form you're going to be out of luck. I hope this convinces Universal that there's a desire for Celestial Park's original theming compared to the brand-overload of Epic's other areas though, and to put Cacao more at the forefront of this area instead of making him a shop mascot. We are in dire need of a Captain Cacao meet and greet, and hope he flies in on his moonship soon, or he could be added as a part of Stardust Racers, Celestial Park's own high-thrills dual coaster (which, in one tiny acquiescence to licensing, is equipped with its own Flux capacitor as a nod to Back to the Future). For now, you can eat your feelings about missing out on the merch at Celestial Park's various space-themed dining locations, particularly Pizza Moon, a 1900s space exploration-inspired cinema port of pizzas. Pizza is a solid theme park food staple, but this spot features A Trip to the Moon-style atmosphere in the most gorgeous way. I didn't want to leave; I just wanted to eat the various moon pies all day, all of which had fun space theming, like the Space Cowboy (a spin on a BBQ pie) and the Pizzare Lunare (which featured a purple-colored crust, thanks to the addition of ube). All that's missing is a Captain Cacao-themed kids menu! It's clear from the interest even in the preview phase of Epic Universe that Captain Cacao is one of the park's biggest and most surprising hits. It's a shame that he's not really at the heart of what Celestial Park has to offer to visitors who might want to see something new over the familiar brand haunts of the other areas of the park. Maybe that will change as Epic Universe grows and evolves in the coming months and years, but first: Universal needs to restock that bear soon. Epic Universe opens to the public starting today, May 22. Travel and accommodations were provided for the purpose of review

All you need to know about Universal Orlando's new Epic theme park

You can imagine the boardroom meeting back in 2019, when Universal Orlando announced the opening of a new theme park. 'What are we going to call it? I mean, it's going to be epic….' And so, it is. Delayed by the pandemic, the 110 acres of Epic Universe (or 20,423 steps, I counted), offers a slew of brand-new rides, attractions and restaurants, and finally opens its giant portal today. So is it worth adding to your (probably very full) to-do list when visiting the theme park capital of the world? Here's what to expect from the new kid on the big block. Celestial Park 9 Celestial Park's wild Stardust Racers attraction. Carole Sovocool Epic follows the tried-and-true theme park layout of a hub with four 'worlds' attached, and with rides that exit through the gift shop. Each world is accessed via a unique portal which transports the 'traveler' to another realm. Celestial Park is the centerpiece, and the only non-franchised part of the park. The area aims to 'put the park back in theme park' and certainly the layout is pretty and pastoral, with lots of flowers and greenery, winding paths through lakes, waterfalls and fountains, and artful statuary. The theme is mythological and astronomical and is particularly lively at night, with light shows adding to the water features at night. Rides and attractions 9 Celestial Park is the center of the action. KILBY_PHOTO_LLC You'll find the park's big e-ticket ride for thrill seekers here — Stardust Racers. Two dueling, racing coasters tear along 5,000 feet of track, with loops and inversions that provide plenty of airtime (i.e., when you feel as if you are leaving your seat). Fast and smooth, the signature 'celestial spin' where the two coasters perform an inverted crisscross elicits the desired screaming. Constellation Carousel provides a quieter centerpiece, where creatures from the constellations gently float to relaxing music. There's also a water play area, Astronomica, for the kiddos. Where to eat You have two full-service dining options here, which are the only ones in the park. Atlantic, surrounded by the lake, is tagged as a Victorian aquarium, with fish shaped lanterns that appear to swim. There are also great views across the park. There's a good selection of seafood, of course, as well as burgers and pasta. The sweeping Aquaria Bar will be a hotspot for weary park goers, but the Espresso Manhattan there ($18) makes a great pickup. The Blue Dragon Pan Asian restaurant has Chinese, Thai and Japanese fare in a cool space decorated with neon dragons and tigers. Meanwhile, for quick serve, the Oak and Star Tavern features barbecue while Meteor Astropub has pub grub and — pro tip — a spot for outside dining that seems to catch a bit of wind tunnel that creates a nice breeze. Pizza Moon, supposedly a 1900s theater turned into a restaurant, sports a Georges Méliès-style decor and is already becoming lauded as the best park pizza ever (although admittedly the bar for that is pretty low). Certainly, the Pizza Lunare ($18.99) is delicious — roasted garlic béchamel, fromage de lune, ricotta, pancettagarlic confit and ube pizza crust, which is purple! Super Nintendo World Similar to the Super Mario themed areas in Japan and Hollywood, this is aimed squarely at Gen X and millennials. Bring your sunglasses and don't be hungover because the colors are super vivid, there's princesses and toadstools, and everything is moving all the time. In one corner of the world, a tunnel leads to Donkey Kong Country, a first for the US, which boasts tall trees, waterfalls and the Golden Temple. Rides and attractions 9 Mine-cart Madness is a ride based on Nintendo's 'Donkey Kong' franchise. There's a gentle ride for the kiddos, Yoshi's Adventure, which travels slowly through Mushroom Kingdom in search of glowing eggs. Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge brings the Mario Kart video games to life, so you race around a track in a 3D virtually enhanced experience, all set in Bowser's castle. The aim is to beat bad Bowser in a race by zapping coins, and your kids will most likely be better at it than you. In Donkey Kong Country, Mine-Cart Madness is a fast, unique and very fun roller coaster, since the innovative technology couples the carts below the rails, then makes it look as if you are jumping over gaps and careening off the track. For general park fun, a Power Up band ($45) lets you zap 102 hotspots which logs your score in the Universal app, so you can compete against other park goers. Where to eat It's all grab and go here, at Toadstool Cafe (think Mario burgers, which are topped with a little red hat), Yoshi's Snack Island, Turbo Boost Treats, and sundaes and floats at Bubbly Barrel in Donkey Kong Country (banana flavored, of course). How to Train Your Dragon: Island of Berk Because who doesn't want a pet dragon? This world was developed in partnership with DreamWorks Animation to re-create the hit movie franchise that features a dragon-filled Viking universe. They went to town, with fiery statues, a giant lagoon, lush landscapes and villages, as well as dragons lounging in their natural habitat, as well as occasionally flying overhead at night. The upcoming live film in June will heighten the allure. Rides and attractions 9 Hone your Norse warrior skills on the Island of Berk. KILBY_PHOTO_LLC There's loads of fun for the kids here, with Viking training camps and live shows, as well as cuteness personified in the animatronic Toothless, who lives at Haddock Paddock. But be warned, his meet and greet has long queues. Expect animatronic appearances, such as those from super-cute baby Light Fury dragon Pouncer and a smoke-breathing Snow Wraith. 9 Beware the smoke-breathing Snow Wraith. Carole Sovocool 9 The Untrainable Dragon is a handful. KILBY_PHOTO_LLC There's also a first-rate show, the Untrainable Dragon, an auditorium performance that melds Imax-style cinematics with dancing, singing, acrobatics and, yes, a flying Toothless. For a fast and fun coaster ride, Hiccup's Wing Gliders soars through the land with swoops and surprises. On the Fyre Drill, guests compete in teams to blast water cannons at targets. (You will get wet). And if you like to go upside down, Dragon Racer's Rally has tippy seats on a rotating pendulum that spins you in all directions. Where to eat 9 Head to Grog & Gruel to pair mac with cheese. Mead Hall is a huge, dark stone tavern offering the usual park fare with a Viking meat bent — and yes, there is mead (honey wine) for $14. Spit Fyre Grill has curated bowls and thumbs up that there's Valka's vegan option (kale, bean salad, pineapple salsa, candy beets, vegan feta, mango and mint vinaigrette, $15.99). Head to Hooligan's Grog & Gruel for a mac and cheese (aka 'gruel') fix which offers loaded varieties served up in practically a whole loaf of bread. The one with 'fish-shaped crackers' (guess they didn't get the Goldfish sign off) is weirdly good ($15.99). 9 Quench your honey-seeking thirst at Mead Hall. KILBY_PHOTO_LLC The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic All three Universal Orlando parks now have a Harry Potter world, so you'll have to get a multi-ticket to do them all — see what they did there? Adding to Hogsmeade (Islands of Adventure) and Diagon Alley (Universal Studios), this one loops in the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise to bring a Parisian flair to the land. The re-creation of the 1920s Place Cachée is, like the other Potter lands, jaw-dropping in its intense attention to detail — it would take weeks to catch all the Easter eggs here. And yes, there's a wand shop (Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique). The baguette will set you back $65 and will bring to life some of the shop windows and artefacts. Rides and attractions There's just one ride, but it's one of the park's main attractions. At Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, riders enter the Métro-Flo (inspired by the Floo Network in the films) that allows wizards to zip between countries. This one takes riders to the British Ministry of Magic for the trial of the infamous Dolores Umbridge. After winding though corridors, riders arrive at the awe inspiring, towering offices of the Ministry before joining another queue for a lift. The ride cars look a lot like the ones from Tower of Terror, but these are omnidirectional and 'fly' around CGI film and animatronics as Umbridge's escape prompts a chase. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and a house-elf named Higgledy are involved, and you'll undulate and bump along until chaos is controlled. Elsewhere in the world, and new for the franchise: A live theater show, Le Cirque Arcanus. Enter into the magical tent where circus performers meld into a world of fantastic beasts and artistry for an over-sensory overload that almost feels like a ride. Where to eat There is no fine dining here, strangely, given the French theming, but quick serve Café L'air De La Sirène has French inspired food including breakfasts with crepes, baguettes, and fancier fare. To escape the Florida sun, the dark spooky corners of Le Gobelet Noir offers sandwiches and, for cast iron stomachs, the Alchemist's Platter (smoked sausage, potato and cheese pierogies, marinated beets, pickled egg, caramelized onions, warm pretzel, German mustard, and cheese fondue, $27.99). The Bièraubeurre Cart plies the much lauded butterbeer, $8.99. (A hard pass from me). Dark universe For goths everywhere, this is a classic old school monster mash from Universal's vaults, complete with lightning strikes and a windmill which bursts into flames several times an hour. Entering the doomed, ravaged village of Darkmoor — complete with monsters on stakes and in gibbets (Universal does dark in a way that Disney really can't) you'll see the towering Frankenstein Manor, where Victoria, the great-great-granddaughter of Henry Frankenstein, continues his experiments. What could go wrong? It's not all scary monsters though, since there is a meet and greet with unusual village people, and a theatrical makeup experience that lets you live out fan fantasies. Rides and attractions Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is a big ticket ride and takes you into Victoria Frankenstein's gory lab and on into the catacombs of Frankenstein Manor. She and henchman Ygor plan to take control of Dracula, and mayhem ensues. Riders are seated in robo arms (as used in the Harry Potter Forbidden Journey ride) and are whirled around huge animatronic and CGI monsters such as the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Brides of Dracula. In another cursed corner of the world, a regular coaster, Curse of the Werewolf, takes riders through a forest to escape being werewolf-ified. The coaster cars spin randomly as you race in various directions in this fun (but short) coaster. Where to eat Gory food, anyone? Head to Das Stakehaus, a vampire haunt that's supposedly been built over catacombs. Sit, click the QR code and food arrives courtesy of a vampire's familiar. Meat eaters will revel in Carved Staked Steak ($23.99) or 'Blood' Orange Chicken sandwich ($17.99). The fiery windmill from Frankenstein overlooks the quick serve Burning Blade Tavern, a supposed cozy hangout for monster hunters. Try the Monocane, the fictional drug from 'The Invisible Man' that here is a green mocktail served in a souvenir Erlenmeyer flask ($12). Where to stay 9 Rooms at Vegas-inspired Helios stat at $745 a night. Carole Sovocool Epic is about 4 miles south of the other parks, where two hulking new sister hotels, Stella Nova and Terra Nova, offer a whopping 750 budget friendly rooms apiece. They look a bit like beached cruise ships in sparkly tile, but decent facilities along with really cleanly designed, modern rooms make them both big bang for the buck (from $249 a night). For a truly immersive stay, Helios, a Vegas-y looking hotel, stands right on site at the park, with its own dedicated park entrance. The views keep you in the action, and, bonus, there's a rooftop bar. Mediterranean inspired, there are also 'How to Train your Dragon'-themed rooms. Bottom line This is a world class theme park, and there's no doubt it's a big new addition to the roster. It blends artistry, theming and state of the art rides, has gone overboard in finding new and creative fare, and has something for everyone. As for the cost, one day park passes start at the current usual Orlando area park rate of $139, but you're currently looking at more like $169 for the summer months and up to $199 for holidays. You need to pick a specific date, which can be changed online if needed (extra fees if that date is a more expensive ticket). There are currently no Express passes and for the foreseeable future, lines are likely to be hours long. So, yes, Epic lives up to its name and is well worth a visit — just be prepared to pack your patience.

I Survived Universal's New 62 MPH Roller Coaster, And 40 Other Wild And Fun Things I Did At Universal Epic Universe

Hello! I'm Kristen, a huge theme park fan (and former theme park employee). When I lived in Orlando, Universal Studios was one of my favorite places to go with friends, so I've been super excited for the opening of Universal Resort Orlando's newest theme park, Universal Epic Universe, on May 22nd. Universal Resort Orlando kindly invited me to a behind-the-scenes preview of all the epic (ha) things you'll be able to experience in the park. WARNING: BIG SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! Here's some of what you can expect in Universal Epic Universe: 1. First off, the park itself is beautiful. Here's a view of it from the Grand Helios Hotel (also, if you stay here, you can get directly into the park, no transportation required). Here's another bird's eye view. 2. Epic Universe is divided into five worlds that you enter through portals — The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk, Dark Universe, and Celestial Park. Each portal has an engraved quote introducing you to the world. This is the entrance to the park itself! It says, "Beyond this gate find gardens green and epic worlds to fill your dreams." WORLD #1: CELESTIAL PARK 3. Celestial Park is the main hub of Epic Universe. It's the center of the wheel and spoke design of the park, but unlike some other theme parks, it's not just, like, shops and restaurants. There are two attractions here. This one is the Constellation Carousel, which I did not ride, but it's very pretty. 4. The main attraction in this world is Stardust Racers, a dual-launch rollercoaster where you're racing falling stars. It reaches up to 62 mph! I rode Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit coaster in Universal Studios the day before, and this one felt wayyy more fierce! I loved it. A lot of roller coasters feel too short to me, but this one felt surprisingly long! I'd put it in the same camp as Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Also, I rode both sides, and the green side is more intense. 5. A lot of the new attractions, including this one, have free lockers that use facial recognition to unlock (rather than scanning your park ticket like many others). They're also dual-sided, so you put your stuff in on one side before you board, then you pick it up on the other side when you exit. 6. There are multiple dining options in Celestial Park. I got to sample some food from The Oak & Star Tavern, which is a fast casual barbecue joint. Everyone who told me to try the mango bread was 100% right! OVERALL THOUGHTS ON CELESTIAL PARK: I really like the fact that the main hub has such a great coaster. It makes it feel more like an actual world than just a place you're passing through. And there are so many food options, so you're bound to find something you like. WORLD #2: DARK UNIVERSE: 7. Dark Universe is based on the classic Universal monsters, such as Dracula, the Invisible Man, and Frankenstein's monster. It's the world I was most excited for (and I'm sure a lot of you are, too). IMO, it's the most immersive world and has the best storytelling. All of those classic monster movies come together in the village of Darkmoor. It has hundreds of years of history, from warring vampire factions to the return of the Frankenstein family, to explore. 8. There are two attractions in Dark Universe. The first (and most impressive) is Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment. In the story of this ride, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein has returned to Frankenstein Manor to continue her great-grandfather's work. It takes you through the catacombs beneath Darkmoor to wonder at her experiments to control the monsters — until her archenemy, Dracula, returns. Here's me, excited as can be, ready to move into Frankenstein Manor. 9. Monsters Unchained is a thrill ride with lots of motion. I'd compare it to Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, only more intense. 10. I couldn't take any pictures inside the attraction, but the animatronics — even in the queue — are unbelievable. When I saw the first Victoria Frankenstein animatronic in the pre-show, I initially thought she was an actor. Even the expressions on her face are incredibly lifelike. And on the ride, you get to see plenty of monsters up close. There are also a lot of jumpscares! I definitely screamed more than I expected to. 11. The other attraction is the Curse of the Werewolf, which is a spinning roller coaster. The story here is that Marlena, the leader of The Guild of Mystics, is welcoming you into her camp, where you'll try to escape a forest full of werewolves. The ride vehicles spin freely. Of all the attractions I experienced, this was the one that made me the most dizzy. So, if you're at all prone to motion sickness, you might want to skip this one. I had fun, but TBH, I'm not sure if I'd ride it again. 12. I got to take a look at two of the three quick-service restaurants in Dark Universe. The first was The Burning Blade Tavern, which is a refurbished mill where the local monster hunters hang out. Every so often, the spinning windmill catches on fire! 13. Inside, the monster hunters have put a few of their trophies on display. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed They've also hung garlic to protect the place from vampires. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 14. And inside The Burning Blade, you just might meet a monster hunter, like Gregor here! He accused someone of being a werewolf, but he let it slide as long as they promised not to wolf out. He also promised to protect us if there was any trouble. His presence really added to the immersive atmosphere and brought Darkmoor to life. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 15. I was very excited to see Das Stakehaus, which is run by vampires. I'm obsessed with all the details here, like the fact that the vampire standing outside holds an umbrella to protect them from the Orlando sun. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 16. There's a jumpscare as soon as you walk in the door! Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 17. Inside, the artwork depicts the Night of the Silver Fangs, the final battle between the two vampire factions that emerged after Dracula's disappearance. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 18. The winning faction took control of the coven, and the defeated vampires are displayed on the walls of the restaurant. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 19. Another element that brings Darkmoor to life is the number of characters who are out and about. On the way in, I saw the Invisible Man. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed And on the way out, Ygor, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein's assistant, was chatting with guests. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed OVERALL THOUGHTS ON DARK UNIVERSE: It was everything I hoped it would be and more! The storytelling was my favorite element because it was so original. This was the most immersive world, but it's definitely not for everyone! For example, you have young kids, you may need to wait until they're older. However, for me, it was fantastic; I just wish there were more vampires. WORLD #3: How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 20. The message that welcomes you to Berk couldn't be more accurate — they have lots and lots of dragons! They also have three attractions, three restaurants, and a show. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Here are just a few of the many, many dragons I spotted. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 21. The show, The Untrainable Dragon, is super cute, even if, like me, you aren't super familiar with the world of How to Train Your Dragon. It's set on the day the Vikings install the final beam on their new dragon hatchery, when a seemingly "untrainable" dragon appears. The storyline is more geared towards kids, but the animatronics, effects, and stuntwork make it worth seeing regardless. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 22. When you leave the show, you may find yourself wishing you could adopt a baby dragon — which is something you can actually do! Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed I purchased one of the dragon eggs, each of which has a surprise five-inch baby dragon plush inside. It was $21 before tax (and $22.37 with tax). Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed When you make your purchase, the team members do an adoption and naming ceremony, which is so adorable and fun! The egg packaging also turns into a little holder for your new friend, which you can wear around your neck. This is my stormfly dragon, Sky. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 23. Like Dark Universe, there are characters walking around. Astrid was super approachable and had so many cute interactions with people passing by. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 24. One of the highlights of this world is that you can meet Toothless, the dragon from the movie. And you can actually pet him — but only on the top of his head! Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 25. The best attraction in Berk is Hiccup's Wing Gliders, a rollercoaster where you get to ride on the new flying contraption Hiccup's been working on. It's a pretty good roller coaster without being too intense, so it would be good for people who aren't big roller coaster fans or for kids who haven't ridden one before. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 26. There's also Dragon Racer's Rally, a dragon riding trainer where you soar and spin. With the handles, you can turn yourself upside down or barrel roll. I couldn't get my seat to tilt or spin, but other people were making theirs roll on accident. So, it really just depends. There's also a third attraction I didn't ride — Fyre Drill, a water ride where you compete to soak your opponents by shooting water at them. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed OVERALL THOUGHTS ON HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON — THE ISLE OF BERK: I had a really good time here! It's a great world for families with children or anyone who loves meeting characters. It also feels massive, so if you aren't quite ready for Dark Universe, you could definitely spend extra time here. WORLD #4: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 27. In this world, the time turner on the portal transports you to 1920s Paris, the setting of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. I will say it's a bit soured by the J.K. Rowling of it all, but the incredibly talented people who designed the world deserve so much credit. They created a truly stunning and captivating experience. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Editor's Note: BuzzFeed does not support discriminatory or hateful speech in any form. We stand by the LGBTQ+ community and all fans who found a home in the Harry Potter series and will work to provide a safe space for fans. If you, like us, feel impassioned about trans rights, learn more or donate to an amazing UK-based charity here. 28. The main (and only, so far) attraction in this world is Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. Through the Métro-Floo, you travel to '90s London for the trial of Dolores Umbridge at the Ministry of Magic. The ride itself could be compared to to Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment or Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, but the ride vehicle is much bigger, and there's less movement. The show element is a mix of animation on massive LED screens and animatronics. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed The Ministry building is so pretty they should let people get married here. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 29. Imelda Staunton reprised the role of Dolores Umbridge. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint didn't reprise their roles, but the animated versions of Harry, Hermione, and Ron were so realistic that I initially wondered if they used the same de-aging technology that Marvel utilized in Black Widow. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 30. In the queue, you get to see Umbridge's office, where you meet a new character who was invented for the ride — Higgledy, Umbridge's house-elf. She's a huge fan of Hermione Granger. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Here's a closer look at some of the details in the office scene. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 31. To get to the ride itself, you go through the Floo! I wasn't able to get a picture there, but this is at the exit. This was my favorite element of the attraction because, when I read Harry Potter as a teenager, I wished I could travel through the Floo Network. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 32. There's also a show, the Le Cirque Arcanus. It centers on Gwenlyn, who's a circus employee and Squib. She must rescue the fantastical beasts from Newt Scamander's suitcase after ringmaster Skender steals it. It's a mix of live performers, magic tricks, puppets, stuntwork, LED screens, and special effects. All of the performers were absolutely amazing, but unfortunately, I'd have to say the show was my least favorite part of the entire park. The main drawback is that, before and during the preshow, you're standing in an incredibly packed room. I know a lot of people go see the shows to escape the heat, so if that's what you're hoping to do, you should go to Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry instead because that queue is so spacious. Le Cirque Arcanus is worth seeing if you have the time for it (or if you're really into Fantastic Beasts), but it's not a must-see. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 33. This world also has new interactive wand experiences, like Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade have. Universal Orlando Resort gave me one of the new second-generation interactive wands for free so I could try them out. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed I tested out one of the interactive spots but couldn't get it to work. Honestly, this is an issue I've had previously in other parts of the Wizarding World with my Ollivanders wand (which I bought myself several years ago). All the new wands are very pretty, but I wouldn't say they enhance your experience very much — especially at $85 a pop. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 34. There are three places to get food in the Ministry of Magic world. I grabbed a snack at the Parisian café, Café L'air De La Sirène. This was my favorite part of this world! Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 35. Inside, there are are so many details, including artwork to represent all the international wizarding schools. This one is for the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 36. For a snack, I bought a pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant) and a thé fraise (strawberry and mint iced tea). They were both SO GOOD and perfectly refreshing on such a hot day. I'm a big fan of pain au chocolat, and this was the best one I've ever had. All food was 50 percent off this day, but I would pay full price for these. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed OVERALL THOUGHTS ON THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER — MINISTRY OF MAGIC: This world is so beautifully designed, and the level of detail is incredible. However, if you're not a Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts fan, I don't think you're really missing out if you decide to skip out on it. WORLD #5: Super Nintendo World Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 37. To get into this world, you descend a green escalator that makes it feel like you're actually entering a video game (I unfortunately didn't get a photo of it because I didn't trust myself not to drop my phone down the escalator, lol). Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 38. I'll admit that I'm not super familiar with Mario and all his friends, but from my few times playing Mario Party with friends, I thought this world looked incredible. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed I feel like I need to press A to jump and collect those gold coins! Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 39. There are two lands within this world — Super Mario Land, which has the attractions Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge and Yoshi's Adventure and Donkey Kong Country, which has Mine-Cart Madness. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 40. I was only able to ride Mine-Cart Madness, but oh my goodness, am I glad I did! Even as someone who's more into Animal Crossings than Super Mario, I had so much fun! There's an illusion where it looks like you're jumping over broken parts of the track, and it somehow feels so real! Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed 41. Another key element of Super Nintendo World is the Power-Up Bands, which enable you to play with the Interactive Key Challenges. Universal Orlando Resort gifted me this Donkey Kong Power-Up Band for free. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed TBH, like the wand, I didn't really use it. Because of time constraints, I didn't particularly go looking for the interactive elements, but I don't feel like I missed out. The bands retail for $42, so unless you're really keen on the Interactive Key Challenge, don't feel like you need to buy one to have a good experience. Kristen Harris / BuzzFeed OVERALL THOUGHTS ON SUPER NINTENDO WORLD: This world is really cute and immersive, and I definitely want to go back and spend more time here. It's definitely worth a visit, even if you're not that familiar with Mario. It seems like a really good world for families with children. FINAL THOUGHTS: The best word to describe Epic Universe is already in the name — this place is epic! There's so much to do and so much to discover. If you plan to go, I'd suggest setting aside at least two days for this park, because even with a tour guide and Express Pass on a not-that-busy day, I wasn't able to experience everything. Universal Epic Universe opens May 22, 2025, and you can visit for tickets! If you're planning to visit Epic Universe, what are you most excited to experience? Let me know in the comments!
