According to reports, an agent based in Punjab had promised to help them reach Australia via the Dubai-Iran route, assuring them of accommodation during their stay in Iran. However, soon after their arrival in Iran, the three men were reportedly abducted. Their families claim that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of ₹1 crore and threatened to kill the men if the payment was not made. The relatives alleged that the kidnappers shared pictures and videos showing the men with their hands bound by ropes and visible cuts and bruises on their bodies. The families said they were able to communicate with the men during the initial days following the abduction, but contact was lost after May 11. The agent from Hoshiarpur who facilitated their travel is reportedly missing, and an FIR was registered against him on May 16.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed to media houses that the missing individuals—identified as Yogesh Panchal, Mohammad Sadeeque, and Sumeet Sud—had travelled to Iran for business purposes between December 2024 and early January 2025. Families have reported receiving ransom demands and disturbing communications indicating that the men may be held against their will. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is actively engaging with Iranian officials to ensure a thorough investigation and the safe recovery of the missing nationals. According to official statements quoted by the Economic Times, Yogesh Panchal and Sadeeque arrived in Tehran under Iran's 15-day visa waiver programme, intended to facilitate tourism and business exchanges. Yogesh Panchal, notably, had recently established an export firm specialising in dry fruits and apples and was exploring commercial opportunities in Iran. The three men were last known to be residing in Tehran's Baherestan area, but contact with them was lost shortly after their arrival.

Per reports, an agent in Punjab had promised to send them to Australia via the Dubai-Iran route. He reportedly assured them that they would be provided a stay in Iran. But soon after they landed in Iran on May 1, they were reportedly kidnapped. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore, according to the victims' families. Kidnappers threatened to kill the men if money was not sent, the relatives said. They also alleged that kidnappers have shared the pictures and videos of the men with them, showing their hands tied by ropes with cuts and bruising marks on their bodies. The families said that they were able to speak with these men during the first few days after their alleged kidnapping, but they have not been able to connect with them since May 11. The agent from Hoshiarpur who sent the men abroad is reportedly missing. An FIR against the agent was filed on May 16. Delhi Raises Issue With Tehran The grieving families approached the Embassy of India to report their kidnapping and request that it ensure their safe return. "The Embassy has strongly taken up this matter with the Iranian authorities, and requested that the missing Indians should be urgently traced and their safety should be ensured," the Indian Embassy said in a statement.
