Costco still has eyes on Pensacola with new plans for Nine Mile store submitted July 14
(This story was updated to add new information.) Costco officially set its eyes on the Pensacola market by filing a proposal to build a store at 225 E. Nine Mile Road last June. More than a year later, Costco is yet to receive approval from Escambia County's Development Review Committee (DRC) since submitting their plans. Still, there are signs of life that Costco still wants to make the Pensacola store a reality. The retailer filed its latest proposal to Escambia County on July 14, nearly four months after its previous submission. A review by the DRC isn't scheduled yet., though four sets of plans have been filed for the project so far. The News Journal reached out to Costco for comment on the potential store, but their policy is to not comment on future stores until they're ready to share details about the location, which is typically two-to-three months out from its opening date. Cook Out joins Pensacola: Cook Out has opened in Pensacola An Escambia County spokesperson confirmed receipt of the proposal to the News Journal and stated that "some state regulatory items are still pending" for the project. What's Costco? Costco is a membership warehouse club that has hundreds of locations worldwide and offers a wide selection of merchandise ranging from groceries, furniture and electronics to pet insurance, bottled water delivery and travel packages. Is Costco coming to Pensacola? Costco plans to build a 172,580-square-foot store at 225 E. Nine Mile Road with a gas station in between Sam's Seafood & Grill and Wells Fargo bank, a tire center alongside improvements to the existing plazas' parking lot and entryways. If Costco's plans are approved by the county, they'll first have to demolish the existing building inside the plaza before building their store. Planet Fitness, the last business standing in the building, is constructing its own location across the street. Some of the existing businesses in the plaza that aren't based inside that building will remain if the project is approved, such as Dairy Queen, Sam's Seafood and Wells Fargo. Escambia County initially received an application from Thomas Engineering, a Tampa-based engineering firm, last June on behalf of Costco to develop its first Pensacola store inside an existing shopping center on Nine Mile Road. The group resubmitted its proposal in October after receiving feedback from the DRC, which painted a clearer picture of the potential project, but Costco still didn't receive a development order from the DRC to start the process. Another set of site plan drawings were filed to Escambia County in March that made slight revisions to the previous proposal. Developers reduced the proposed number of parking spots to 830 and added plans to create bike racks next to the liquor store. Escambia County received the fourth, and latest, set of plans on July 14, which is a similar proposal as the previous submission. When is Costco opening in Pensacola? There isn't a projected opening date for Pensacola's first Costco store, as the project has not been approved by the DRC yet. Where is Costco opening new stores? Costco has opened three new stores since June, including a location in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, and Malmo, Sweden, with plans to debut seven new locations through August 2025. That includes three international stores, two of which will open in Canada while the remaining store will open in Mexico. The Villages is the only Florida city with a Costco opening scheduled in August. The incoming stores will be located in the following cities. NASCAR Clash will return to Bowman Gray Stadium to start 2026 season
A lot of moving parts remain to be nailed down before the 2026 NASCAR schedule is released, but we know where the engines will first crank to life. Bowman Gray Stadium — in Winston-Salem, N.C. — will again serve as host of the season-opening Clash over the weekend of Jan. 31-Feb. 1. Cook Out, a North Carolina-based chain of fast-food restaurants, will return as title sponsor. Bowman Gray Stadium includes a quarter-mile track around a football field, but that's where the similarities end with the L.A. Coliseum. After a 43-year run at Daytona International Speedway (1979-2021), the Clash has been a short-track race the past four years — from 2022-24 at the Los Angeles Coliseum before moving to the quarter-mile Bowman Gray track this year. Advertisement It has become part of NASCAR's recent embrace of historic North Carolina venues — the All-Star Race moved to North Wilkesboro two years ago, and earlier this year, the Xfinity and Truck Series returned to Rockingham. The 2026 Clash will be followed by an off-weekend for NASCAR (the weekend of the Super Bowl) before the regular season starts with the Feb. 15 Daytona 500. All the N.C. restaurants viral food critic Keith Lee visited
Keith Lee, a viral TikTok food critic, concluded his recent food tour, which highlighted six North Carolina restaurants. Why it matters: Over 17 million of Lee's followers get a glimpse of what's cooking at some local restaurants, which can make a huge impact on each business after just one video. Driving the news: In a recent TikTok video, which has over 600,000 views and 111,000 likes in under 15 hours, Lee announced that he has left North Carolina. "Me and my family are no longer in North Carolina, but North Carolina was amazing. There's a bunch of restaurants that we intended on going to but wasn't able to make it," Lee said in the video. Zoom in: Before he left, Lee managed to impact one last N.C. restaurant. The owner of Madame B's Bakery in Raleigh made daily videos during Lee's visit that suggested he was coming to the restaurant. He wasn't able to perform a taste test on any of the items at Madame B's, but he gave the owner a $1,000 tip and an additional $500 that the owner could use to give back to customers. Here are the six North Carolina establishments Lee visited, plus what he ordered at each spot: Hibachi Papi Lee kicked off the food tour at a food truck in Clayton that sells a mix of hibachi plates and Alfredo pasta dishes. Best bites: Lamb Alfredo scored a 9.2 out of 10. The steak and chicken hibachi plate earned a 9. If you go: Check their Instagram for an updated schedule of locations before you go. Hibachi Papi will be at 501 Yates Drive in the Gateway Conference & Event Center from May 19–22. Cook Out The N.C.-based fast food chain was the next must-try spot that Lee visited while in Clayton. Best bites: The hush puppies, which he says taste like cornbread muffins, scored a 7.5. The cheddar-style burger was one of the best things he tried. Yes, but: He was not a fan of Cheerwine. He was recommended to try the Salibury-manufactured soda, calling it "Carolina drink." He gave it a 5. The corn dog (which earned a 6.5) and the walking taco were his least favorite items.. What they're saying: Lee explains this stop was a must-try when visiting the state, saying: "I was told if I came to North Carolina and didn't have Cook Out, that I didn't come to North Carolina." He later goes on to mention that "I was also told that this is a after-the-club, late-night, 2-o'clock-in-the-morning type of place. This is just for the culture." A Place at the Table Cafe This pay-what-you-can restaurant in Raleigh allows you to work for your order if you can't afford it. How it works: You have five options on how to pay for your meal if you can't pay the suggested price. Pay less than the suggested price buy paying $3 or more for an item like an entree, side or drink. Volunteer in the cafe for one hour for your meal three times a week. Pay it forward by purchasing a $10 "place card," which is a donation that allows someone else to order a meal. Dine as a family in the cafe for free once a week. Use a place card to afford one meal. Best bites: Chicken and waffles with a hot honey sauce, which Lee rated an 8 out of 10. Stop by: Find A Place at the Table Cafe at 300 W. Hargett St., #50. It's open Tuesday through Sunday, 8am–2pm. Corner Boys BBQ The owner of this Raleigh-based food truck specializing in barbecue has been asking Lee to visit his business since 2023. Best bites: The collard greens, brisket and ribs scored above 8.7. The pulled pork and lamb chops also received high scores. Stop by: Find Corner Boys BBQ at 2201 S. Wilmington St. Open daily, 8am–5pm. Crav'n Caribbean This Jamaican takeout spot is located within a Charlotte ghost kitchen. Context: Over 100 people, including popular local food influencer Cory Wilkins and the restaurant's owner, recommended this place. Best bites: Lee tried the jerk bourbon chicken and oxtail fried rice, which had high ratings individually. Lee gave the entree and side a combined rating of 6.5. Stop by: 2200 Thrift Road, inside Wesley Heights City Kitch. Open Monday through Friday, 12–3pm and 4–9pm, Saturday 12–9pm and Sunday 1–7pm. JJ's Mama's Soul Food & More Lee says the owner calls this spot the first Black-owned restaurant in Lexington. Stop by: 601 W. A popular North Carolina fast-food chain is coming to Jacksonville. City documents show Cook Out is planning to open a location on Beach Boulevard. Cook Out planning to open Hermitage location on Old Hickory Boulevard
HERMITAGE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Hermitage residents will soon have another dining option available to them. North Carolina-based restaurant Cook Out will be opening a location along Old Hickory Boulevard on the site where a Fazoli's once stood. The restaurant, which boasts an affordable 'tray' of food offerings, including hamburgers, quesadillas, hot dogs, corndogs, barbecue sandwiches and chicken sandwiches, has four Davidson County locations, with three on the horizon — including the Hermitage location. They've got everything from corn dogs to quesadillas to milkshakes, and I think it's going to be an overall hit with the Donelson/Hermitage/Old Hickory community.' The addition will be a welcome one, according to Huffman, as that area of town took a couple hits with the closure of the Hermitage Big Lots due to economic issues and the closure of the Hooters restaurant, which shared the same parking lot. 'This Cook Out location is very close to that, and it's the first of a few new businesses that are going to be coming to the Hermitage area that I think people are going to be very excited about,' Huffman said. 'I think that a good company like Cook Out seeing the potential is really exciting and it should give everybody in Donelson and Hermitage a lot of optimism about what is coming in the future. While a fan of the food himself, Huffman said he was also excited to see another late-night offering coming to the area, particularly for those who may work later hours, like those at TriStar Summit Hospital or first responders in the area working the shifts that conclude later at night. Increased DUI enforcement planned by Franklin Police Cook Out is only one step toward the future growth of the business and residential landscape, according to Huffman, as 'a little bit of everything' is in the works to be added to his district. 'The nearest announcement will come in the form of an exciting new restaurant addition,' Huffman told News 2. 'We definitely need new restaurants in Hermitage. My district in specific really is lagging behind when it comes to restaurant options. That's one thing that I ran on, was bringing new options for the area, and I'm really excited to announce that in the coming weeks.' A firm timeline for the construction has not yet been confirmed, but News 2 has reached out to Cook Out for comment. The restaurant website also lists an upcoming location in Antioch on Hickory Hollow Parkway and a South Nashville location on Harding Place as in the works.
