'This has been the most set up for me, so I'm really happy to have gotten this one.' Earlier this month, Ruthe became the youngest-ever senior national champion at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships with his victory in the 3,000 meters, clocking 7: performance took more than three seconds off his previous best mile time of 4.01.72, which he set at the Cooks Classic in January, as well as improving on Tanner's New Zealand under-20 and under-19 record of 3:58.41.A sub-four-minute mile has long been considered one of the great barriers in athletics, a feat first achieved by Great Britain's Roger Bannister in in training and shoe technology have made it a more common phenomenon in modern times, though many argue that it still retains its aura as a landmark achievement for middle-distance runners. — CNN

Athletics prodigy Sam Ruthe, 15, becomes youngest to run sub-four-minute mile

15-year-old New Zealand athlete Sam Ruthe became the youngest person ever to run a sub-four-minute mile on Wednesday. Ruthe crossed the line in Auckland with a time of 3:58.35, finishing just behind pacemaker and two-time Olympian Sam Tanner. Ben Wall, also pacing the race, also finished within four minutes. Advertisement Ruthe achieved the feat 24 days before his 16th birthday, breaking the record previously held by two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen when he was 16, per New Zealand Athletics. The Norwegian ran a time of 3:58.07. The sub-four minute mile has been a benchmark for athletes since Britain's Roger Bannister first achieved the feat in 1954. 'This was probably my favourite goal that I've reached,' said Ruthe, via Reuters. 'I've definitely enjoyed this one the most, with all the people here supporting me. 'This has been the most set up for me, so I'm really happy to have gotten this one.' The 2009-born athlete calmly shrugged as he crossed the finish line while Tanner celebrated alongside him. Ruthe comfortably bested his previous record of 4:01.72 that he set at the Cooks Classic in the New Zealand of Whanganui in January. He became the youngest-ever senior male national champion in any event by winning the 3000m at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships earlier this month. ()

NZ boy becomes first 15-yr-old to run sub-4 minute mile

Australia's teenage middle distance sensation Cam Myers looks to have an Oceanian rival as, across the Tasman, New Zealand celebrates a young athletics phenom who's run his way into athletics folklore. At the tender age of 15, Ruthe became the only lad of his age - and the youngest athlete in history - to run a sub four-minute mile on Wednesday, some 71 years since Roger Bannister first achieved an athletic landmark once fondly believed to have been impossible. Ruthe, who looks like another great New Zealand miling superstar in the making like Jack Lovelock, Peter Snell and John Walker, smashed the landmark by two seconds at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland, helped to a time of three minute 58.35 seconds by pacemakers. View this post on Instagram A post shared by CITIUS MAG | Running + Track and Field News (@citiusmag) Ruthe, who finished second in the race, beat his previous mark of 4:01.72 achieved at the Cooks Classic in Whanganui in January. The previous record for youngest sub four-minute miler was held by the Norwegian superstar Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who clocked 3:58.07 at 16 years 8 months 8 days eight years ago and has since gone on to become a double Olympic champion. Next up, Ruthe, who achieved the record-breaking run 24 days short of his 16th birthday, will doubtless be after the record for the best time ever run by a 16-year-old - the 3:55.44 clocked by Canberra's Myers, who's since gone on to achieve his own remarkable feats. Canberran Myers, now 18, has broken the under-20 indoor world mile record twice this year already, clocking his latest landmark of 3:47.48 in the Wanamaker Mile in New York in February - the first time a teenager had broken 3:48 for the mile, either indoors or outdoors. Now it's Kiwi Ruthe's turn to stagger the athletics world. "This was probably my favourite goal that I've reached. I've definitely enjoyed this one the most, with all the people here supporting me," said the lad from the North island harbourside city of Tauranga. "This has been the most set up for me, so I'm really happy to have gotten this one." Ruthe, like Myers, has been creating athletics headlines all summer, having shattered the age-15 world best for 3000m in November, and having lowered it twice more, most recently clocking 7:56.18 at the New Zealand Championships to become the youngest ever senior male national champ in any discipline.

AUCKLAND: New Zealand's Sam Ruthe has made history by becoming the youngest athlete and the first 15-year-old to run a mile in under four minutes, breaking the record by two seconds on Wednesday at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland. The middle-distance prodigy completed the race in a record three minutes and 58.35 seconds, with pacemakers Sam Tanner and Ben Wall also finishing within the four-minute mark. "This was probably my favourite goal that I've reached. I've definitely enjoyed this one the most, with all the people here supporting me," Ruthe said. "This has been the most set up for me, so I'm really happy to have gotten this one." Ruthe, who achieved the record-breaking feat 24 days short of his 16th birthday, beat his previous best time of four minutes and 1.72 seconds, which he achieved at the Cooks Classic in Whanganui in January. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, a two-time Olympic champion and holder of three world records, ran the race in 3:58.07 at the age of 16, while Australia's Cam Myers holds the current best time for a 16-year-old at 3:55.44. — Reuters
