Gavin Betts pitches 22-save shutout, leading Canada to Hlinka Gretzky Cup bronze medal

Gavin Betts had a 22-save shutout as Canada earned bronze at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup with a 3-0 win over Finland on Saturday in Brno, Czech Republic. Cooper Williams, Ethan Belchetz and Daxon Rudolph supplied the offence as Canada won its 30th medal at the under-18 men's hockey tournament. The Canadians fell to the United States in a 4-3 shootout loss in Friday's semifinal. "It was tough to lose in the semifinals because we came here to try to win gold, but sometimes things do not work out the way you want them to," said Belchetz. "We were a little down after yesterday's game, but we wanted to leave here with a medal and bring something home to our families." Canada has won 25 gold medals, three silver, and two bronze since the international event was first held in 1991. William Gammals stopped 27 shots in net for Finland. The United States beat Sweden 5-3 for gold later Saturday. The Hlinka Gretzky Cup will be held in Edmonton in 2026. It will be the fifth time the international under-18 showcase is played in Canada, with Alberta previously hosting three times (Edmonton — 2024; Red Deer — 2022; Edmonton and Red Deer — 2018). Canada won gold at all three of those tournaments, defeating the Czechs 2-1 in the 2024 final. "We are thrilled to bring the Hlinka Gretzky Cup back to Edmonton next year, and to kick off the 2026-27 hockey season with the top under-18 players from eight countries competing for a gold medal," said Dean McIntosh, Hockey Canada's senior vice-president of revenue, fan experience and community impact. "This is a prestigious tournament with a deep history that is an important part of the international hockey calendar, and we look forward to hosting a world-class event for teams, players and fans next August."

LSU baseball drops series opener vs Auburn as Kade Anderson takes first loss

LSU baseball drops series opener vs Auburn as Kade Anderson takes first loss Watching Friday night's game against Auburn was as fun as stepping on a Lego piece for LSU baseball fans. After sweeping back-to-back SEC series, the Tigers' streak ended as Auburn won game one 8-4. Coming off of his best start this season, Kade Anderson stepped onto the mound on the Plains and it did not go well for him. Auburn scored six runs in five innings. Auburn held the lead and went wire to wire. In the bottom of the second inning, Auburn got on the board with a two-RBI double to left-center field that was just out of the reach of Derek Curiel. LSU could not get anything going offensively and Auburn just kept piling it on. In the bottom of the fifth inning, a three-RBI triple and an RBI single gave Auburn a 6-0 lead after five innings. Auburn scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI off Cooper Williams to make it 7-0. In the top of the seventh inning, LSU was finally able to get on the board as Curiel hit an RBI groundout and Jared Jones hit a two-RBI double to cut the lead to 7-3. LSU transfer, Sam Dutton has been the Ace for Auburn all year and he was great for them tonight. Sam pitched six full innings and only allowed three hits on seven strikeouts and two walks. Anderson's night finished after 4.1 innings where he gave up six runs on six hits, five strikeouts, and one walk. Mavrick Rizy entered the game after Cooper Williams and he pitched two innings and allowed one run on five hits, two strikeouts, and no walks. In the top of the ninth inning, Chris Stanfield hit a double with two outs and Curiel followed that up with an RBI double to cut the lead to 8-4. That was as close as LSU could come to making a comeback as the good Tigers fell 8-4 in Game One. With the loss, LSU falls to 31-4 overall and 10-3 in conference play. Game two will be on Saturday night with the first pitch scheduled for 6 PM.

Prince Albert Raiders Take 2025 WHL East Division Title

The Prince Albert Raiders are division champions once again. After an intense affair with the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday, the Raiders edge out their blue and yellow adversaries for the top spot in the East division. Cooper Williams opened the scoring for the Blades, after a dogged effort from David Lewandowski. Harrison Lodewyk would then respond for Prince Albert late in the first, with a terrific shot over the shoulder of Evan Gardner. The Raiders would then get a couple more, courtesy of Aiden Oiring and youngster Ty Meunier, but the Blades were not going down without a fight. Hunter Laing and Hayden Harsanyi both tallied one to tie the game at three halfway through the third period, but Lukas Dragicevic put home his 18th of the season with three minutes left to put Prince Albert ahead for the second and final time. The Raiders are now locked into a round one brawl with the Edmonton Oil Kings, and Saskatoon awaits their opponent as that will be decided by Sunday's matchup between the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Calgary Hitmen.
