No motion yet on one-third seat call for Sabah and Sarawak, proposal still with Cabinet, says Dewan Rakyat Speaker
KUCHING, April 23 — Dewan Rakyat has yet to receive any formal motion from Members of Parliament regarding face-to-face negotiations on the demand for one-third of parliamentary seats to be allocated to Sabah and Sarawak. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said the proposal, put forward by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, would fall under government policy matters, which must first be decided by the executive. 'I haven't received anything yet. Perhaps discussions are still ongoing at the Cabinet level, in which I am not involved in,' he told a press conference of the 4th Meeting of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (WAIPA) 2025, held at Damai Lagoon Resort here yesterday. Johari Abdul clarified that his role was solely to oversee proceedings in the Dewan Rakyat, while decisions on what issues are tabled for debate lie with the executive branch. 'I leave that to the executive. I'm just the Speaker who manages the debates. 'That is a policy-level matter which I believe must be initiated by the government,' he explained. When asked whether the proposal could be debated in Parliament if formally submitted, Johari Abdul said it would be entirely up to the government. 'In Parliament, it depends, because any matter to be debated there is at the discretion of the executive.' Previously, Fadillah proposed that negotiations to amend the quota to ensure 35 per cent of parliamentary seats go to Sabah and Sarawak should be conducted face-to-face, particularly with MPs from Peninsular Malaysia. He said a similar approach was taken by the current Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, during his tenure as Minister in Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) in efforts to amend Article 160 of the Federal Constitution. 'The demand to allocate one-third of parliamentary seats to Sabah and Sarawak is a complex and challenging issue. 'It not only requires discussions with ministries and government agencies, but more importantly, it involves political negotiations with every Member of Parliament to gain their support and clearly explain why the amendment is needed,' added Fadillah. — The Borneo Post

Proposal for new laws to combat online abuse against women in politics
Johari Abdul speaks at the press conference. – Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has proposed the introduction of new laws to address the growing issue of fake news and online harassment, particularly in politics. The proposal comes in response to the growing challenges faced by women in politics, and highlights how relentless online attacks ranging from slander to threats discourage women's participation in public and political life. 'Sometimes, the suffering they endure is too much. We sympathise with them, which is why we must look at the law,' Johari Abdul told a press conference. The press conference was held for the 4th Meeting of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (WAIPA) 2025, at Damai Lagoon Resort here yesterday. Johari Abdul, who is president of Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), stressed the need for society to understand the root causes behind women's limited involvement in politics, pointing to the widespread dissemination of fake news and online defamation as major deterrents. He also addressed the persistent issue of female underrepresentation in Malaysian politics. 'Just look at Parliament; we don't even have 14 per cent, yet we need 30 per cent,' he said. 'Although women now make up the majority in many universities where some institutions reporting up to 70 per cent female enrolment, this progress has not translated into equal representation in the workforce or political arena. 'If we do nothing, this imbalance will continue.' In addition to these comments on gender equality in politics, Johari Abdul praised the Sarawak government for its initiative to provide free education to students in the state. He described this as an 'extraordinary opportunity', especially for the youth to pursue higher education and prepare for careers in fields like technology and energy. 'I'm thrilled to hear from the Premier that Sarawakian students can pursue university education for free. 'This is the kind of opportunity that should not just be celebrated but expanded. I hope it spreads to Peninsular Malaysia as well,' said the Dewan Rakyat Speaker. Among others present were Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg; Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah; Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; and Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar Datuk Johari Abdul fake news online harassment women's rights workplace

Iraq's Teachers declare nationwide strike on Sunday
Shafaq News/ Teachers declared a nationwide strike, demanding better pay and benefits, with the Coordinating Committee calling the action a necessary step to secure their rights. Ali Rahim, a committee member, emphasized that the Sunday's strike is aimed at securing rights for teachers, including the inclusion of educators in the Educational Service Law and granting them allowances equivalent to those offered to university staff under the Ministry of Higher Education. 'Key demands involve the inclusion of teachers in the cost-of-living allowance, along with increases in transportation, spousal, and children's allowances,' Rahim explained. For his part, Secretary-General of the Iraqi Teachers' Union Nafi' Al-Zalzali stated that the syndicate has yet to decide its position on the strike but will hold a meeting on Sunday to make its decision based on discussions. The member of the Parliamentary Education Committee Zuleikha Elias Qadu, expressed support for the teachers' demands but warned that the strike's timing, close to final exams, could harm students. The strike follows ongoing disputes over compensation and inclusion in the Educational Service Law. The Teachers' Union announced on Facebook on March 28 that, during a meeting with Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani, it presented two key demands: an increase in professional allowances and additional compensation based on geographic location.
