KUCHING: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has proposed the introduction of new laws to address the growing issue of fake news and online harassment, particularly in politics.
The proposal comes in response to the growing challenges faced by women in politics, and highlights how relentless online attacks ranging from slander to threats discourage women's participation in public and political life.
'Sometimes, the suffering they endure is too much. We sympathise with them, which is why we must look at the law,' Johari Abdul told a press conference.
The press conference was held for the 4th Meeting of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (WAIPA) 2025, at Damai Lagoon Resort here yesterday.
Johari Abdul, who is president of Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), stressed the need for society to understand the root causes behind women's limited involvement in politics, pointing to the widespread dissemination of fake news and online defamation as major deterrents.
He also addressed the persistent issue of female underrepresentation in Malaysian politics.
'Just look at Parliament; we don't even have 14 per cent, yet we need 30 per cent,' he said.
'Although women now make up the majority in many universities where some institutions reporting up to 70 per cent female enrolment, this progress has not translated into equal representation in the workforce or political arena.
'If we do nothing, this imbalance will continue.'
In addition to these comments on gender equality in politics, Johari Abdul praised the Sarawak government for its initiative to provide free education to students in the state.
He described this as an 'extraordinary opportunity', especially for the youth to pursue higher education and prepare for careers in fields like technology and energy.
'I'm thrilled to hear from the Premier that Sarawakian students can pursue university education for free.
'This is the kind of opportunity that should not just be celebrated but expanded. I hope it spreads to Peninsular Malaysia as well,' said the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
Among others present were Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg; Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah; Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; and Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar Datuk Johari Abdul fake news online harassment women's rights workplace

Govt refining efforts to officially recognise PLKN 3.0 certificate
PEKAN: The government is currently refining efforts to officially recognise the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 certificate as a benefit for trainees in gaining admission to higher learning institutions or to secure employment. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said the matter was discussed with the National Service Training Department director-general Major General Datuk Ya'cob Samiran. 'This is a credential that can be accepted by all parties, not just the government but also society at large. (With this certificate) we can confirm that the trainee has been exposed to a range of knowledge upon completing the PLKN training,' he said. He said this in a press conference after attending a dialogue session with PLKN trainees at the 505 Territorial Army Regiment Camp here today. Johari also said that the outcome of the discussions is expected to be announced soon. 'We are working with the Public Service Department and several other parties to ensure that the certificate we issue carries merit. Otherwise, it will be just another ordinary certificate -- we want it to have value,' he added. Meanwhile, Ya'cob said several PLKN 3.0 trainees have successfully qualified to join the Malaysian Armed Forces and will begin training in the next intake at the Basic Army Training Centre. 'If we look at the previous intake, around 60 per cent of those who participated in PLKN 3.0 chose to serve in uniformed forces, either in the regular or reserve units,' he also said.

Malaysia seeks tariff relief below 10% for key sectors in upcoming US talks
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is seeking lower tariff rates for selected sectors under the United States' (US) 10 per cent minimum tariff, particularly for industries deemed critical to both economies, ahead of another round of negotiations in Washington on June 18. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said the talks aim to secure fairer terms for Malaysian exporters affected by the new baseline tariff announced by the US administration. "The US currently imposes a 24 per cent tariff on certain Malaysian exports. And of course, our first target is to reduce that rate. The second is to identify sectors that should ideally be subject to tariffs below 10 per cent. "We need to consider sectors that are important to Malaysian exporters and also crucial to the US economy,' he told a press conference after launching the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan 2026-2030, here today. However, the specific sectors under negotiation were not disclosed. In April 2025, the US government announced new tariff measures affecting more than 60 countries, including Malaysia. The implementation of these tariffs has been temporarily paused for 90 days to allow room for negotiations. - Bernama
