Pedri named winner of the Barcelona Players Award 2025

La Liga club Barcelona has named midfielder Pedri Gonzalez as the winner of the 2025 Barca Players Award. This award, which is determined by the FC Barcelona Players' Association, recognises players who demonstrate the club's values, not only on the surface but also in their off-field activities. Last season, Pedri had six goals and eight assists in 59 appearances for Barcelona and was a vital cog in his side's successful season. FC Barcelona Femeni's Claudia Pina was also named the winner. With this recognition, Pina takes over from Aitana Bonmati, winner of the last four editions of the award. Earlier this year, Barcelona winger Raphinha was honoured with the La Liga Player of the Season after the Brazilian played a major role in his side winning the domestic treble, with club teammate Lamine Yamal named Best Under-23 player. Raphinha contributed 34 goals and 25 assists in 57 club games across all competitions, with Barca winning the league title, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. The 28-year-old signed for Barcelona in 2022 from Leeds United and recently signed a contract extension keeping him at the Spanish club until 2028.

Brazil have won all but one of the previous nine editions of Copa America Femenina, but it's Colombia who enter as tournament favorites. Linda Caicedo is probably the single most destructive force in women's soccer, and she has one hell of a partner in crime in dominant forward Mayra Ramirez. Led by their legendary un-retired striker Marta, the Selecao are in the midst of a promising rebuild under Arthur Elias. After failing to make it out of their group at the last World Cup, they've made it to the finals of both the CONCACAF W Gold Cup and Olympics, where they were beaten by the U.S. on both occasions. Colombia have had an awful run of luck at successive major tournaments, getting knocked out by eventual finalists England at the last World Cup, world champions Spain (on penalties) at the Olympics, and the U.S. at CONCACAF W Gold Cup. Quito 2025 could, and maybe should, mark a turning point for Las Cafeteras — and perhaps a wider power shift in South America.
