Steelers updated salary cap space after the release of RB Cordarrelle Patterson

On Monday, former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Cordarrelle Patterson announced his own release on social media with a brutal shot at his former team. This was a move we expected to happen well ahead of the start of training camp and based on his response, Patterson did as well. Patterson had been absent from the team's first four training camp practices with no word of an injury. According to Over the Cap, the Steelers came into the day with $17.654 million in salary cap space. The exact number to spend is a bit different and based on the Top 51 contracts, the team has around $32.3 million to spend. The release of Patterson puts $950,000 in dead money on the books and frees up an additional $2.8 million in cap space. Despite having plenty of cap space, it doesn't feel like the Steelers are in any rush to bring in any more players. The team did sign safety Chuck Clark this past week but his hit for a veteran benefit contract would only be around $1 million. Many fans and some pundits still think the Steelers need to look to free agency to add more talent at wide receiver. However, the team seems fully committed to the guys on the roster and is hoping young players Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin can step up, and the offense is going to lean heavily on tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith as well.

Veteran RB Cordarrelle Patterson says he's been released by the Steelers, leaving All-Pro returner without a team

The Pittsburgh Steelers are making moves on offense by taking out one of their strongest veterans. Running back Cordarrelle Patterson, a four-time Pro Bowler, revealed Monday that he had been released by the Steelers — on his day off, no less. Patterson, 34, announced the news himself, taking a sarcastic tone in a post on X. (The Steelers have yet to announced the move, and Patterson is still on the official roster.) "Breaking news!" Patterson wrote. "Pittsburgh Steelers release old washed up cordarrelle patterson on his day off!!!" The versatile veteran, who has played for six different teams in his career, joined Pittsburgh last season as a running back, wide receiver and kick returner. Patterson's accolades include four First Team All-Pro selections (2013, 2016, 2019, 2020), two straight years as the kickoff return yards leaders (2019-2020) and a Super Bowl victory during his sole year in New England (2018). Patterson primarily worked as a running back for the Steelers last season, but occasionally subbed in as a kick returner and receiver as well. With 13 seasons under his belt, Patterson was one of the most experienced players on Pittsburgh's roster. Now, the Steelers are left with a relatively small and inexperienced running core, even before the end of training camp. Without Patterson, who was listed as a running back/kick returner, Pittsburgh has only five players on the roster listed as running backs: rookies Kaleb Johnson (the Steelers' third-round pick) and Max Hurleman (undrafted), second-year Evan Hull, Trey Sermon and Jaylen Warren. Sermon and Warren, with five and four years of experience, respectively, are the most veteran players in the run game. As for Patterson, it's unclear where the veteran will end up next.

‘Washed up' veteran Cordarrelle Patterson announces Steelers cut him on day off

Veteran utility player Cordarrelle Patterson said the Steelers released him on his day off. The 34-year-old Super Bowl champ, nicknamed 'Flash' for his speed and versatility on the field, jokingly called himself 'washed up' in a tweet that revealed the news on Monday. 'Breaking news,' Patterson wrote, adding four exclamation point emojis. 'Pittsburgh Steelers release old washed up Cordarrelle Patterson on his day off!!!' Advertisement When someone wrote, 'Took long enough,' Patterson replied with, 'Right! I said the same s–t!' He also replied to tweets from NFL reporters Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport about the decision after signing a two-year deal with Pittsburgh in April. Rapoport reposted Patterson's tweet and added a GIF of Ice Cube and Chris Tucker from the movie, 'Friday' — which had the famous Tucker line about getting fired on your day off. The former first-round pick replied, 'For real' with three crying-laughing emojis. Patterson likely won't be a free agent for long. He was limited to 13 games due to an ankle injury in 2024. Retired quarterback Tom Brady previously nicknamed Patterson, 'The Experiment' because of his abilities to thrive at running back, wide receiver and kick returner. Patterson played for the Chicago Bears from 2019-21, before playing for the Atlanta Falcons from 2022-23, and then Pittsburgh.
