Wallabies name their team: Ellis Park star rewarded with first captaincy
Flanker Fraser McReight becomes the 91st captain of the Wallabies while Corey Toole makes his debut at left wing. Wallabies flanker Fraser McReight was rewarded after his man-of-the-match performance against the Springboks at Ellis Park, being named captain for the second Test in Cape Town. McReight will become the 91st player to captain the Wallabies when the second Rugby Championship match kicks off at 5.10pm. Corey Toole will make his Wallabies debut at left wing. He replaces Dylan Pietsch, who suffered a jaw fracture in the first Test. It's one of three changes to the starting side, with back-to-back John Eales Medallist, Rob Valetini returning to the team at number eight, replacing regular captain Harry Wilson who is being managed after limping from the field in Johannesburg. New captain for the Wallabies A former Australia Under 20s skipper, McReight will become the 91st player to captain Australia. He also took over as Captain in last weekend's test after Harry Wilson left the field Tom Robertson is the final change to the matchday 23. He'll start at loosehead prop, after James Slipper returned home under HIA protocols, joining Billy Pollard and Taniela Tupou in the front row. Nick Frost and Will Skelton are again named as the second-row pair, with Tom Hooper completing the back five of the scrum. The experienced halves pairing of Nic White and James O'Connor have been selected for what is the second Test of the side's 2025 Flight Centre Rugby Championship campaign. White is the only player in the matchday 23 who was involved the last time the Wallabies played in Cape Town back in 2014. Len Ikitau inches closer to his 50th cap for the Wallabies, starting at inside centre in his 45th appearance for his country. He'll again partner with Joseph-Aukuso Suallii in the midfield, the outside centre scoring his first try in a gold jersey last Saturday. Toole's club teammate Tom Wright will start at fullback for the 18th time in the last 19 Tests, with 20-year-old Max Jorgensen to line up on the right wing, completing the back three. Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Angus Bell and Zane Nonggorr will again provide ballast as the substitute front row, with Jeremy Williams and Nick Champion de Crespigny the remaining forward cover. Queensland skipper Tate McDermott is the reserve scrumhalf, having showed his versatility again in Johannesburg; spending time on the wing before finishing the game at halfback. Sydney's Tane Edmed is the replacement flyhalf, with Andrew Kellaway finalising the matchday 23. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said: 'The squad as a whole has recovered pretty well from what was a very draining and physical Test match on the highveld last week. 'We struggled to contain a powerhouse Springbok start last weekend and we know that we have to improve leading into what's likely to be a bruising encounter in Cape Town on Saturday night.' It's Toole-time for the Wallabies as history beckons
Speedster Corey Toole will make his Test debut in one of three changes to the Wallabies starting side as they attempt to go back-to-back against the Springboks in South Africa for the first time since 1963. The 25-year-old Paris Olympics sevens star will replace injured winger Dylan Pietsch for their Rugby Championship clash in Cape Town on Sunday (1.10am AEST). Skipper Harry Wilson has failed to overcome a knee issue with Rob Valetini making a timely return at No.8, while Tom Robertson will start in the front row after James Slipper was ruled out after a head knock. Wilson's Queensland teammate Fraser McReight will lead the side, the flanker becoming the 91st player to captain Australia. Your 23 Wallabies to take on South Africa 🦘 MATCH🆚 Springboks🗓️ Sunday August 24 | 1:10am AEST🏟️ DHL Stadium, Cape Town📺 @stansportau#Wallabies — Wallabies (@wallabies) August 21, 2025 After their astounding 38-22 comeback win over the Springboks last week at Ellis Park, the Wallabies are looking to duplicate the 1963 tourists, who claimed victories at Johannesburg and Cape Town. No Australian side has won in Cape Town in 33 years, with the Wallabies losing their last seven straight at the picturesque venue. ACT Brumbies flyer Toole has been knocking at the door for a Test call-up for the past three years and likely would have made his debut last year but was drafted into Australia's sevens teams for Paris. With the more versatile Andrew Kellaway remaining on the bench, Toole's start comes after Pietsch required surgery on a fractured jaw after his tackle went wrong. Known as the fastest man in Australian rugby, Toole has been one of the Brumbies' best performers in the past three seasons, bagging 28 tries. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt said the side had recovered well after the physical encounter at altitude and had identified their slow start - trailing 22-0 - as an area they needed to improve. "The squad as a whole has recovered pretty well from what was a very draining and physical Test match on the highveld last week," he said in a statement. "We struggled to contain a powerhouse Springbok start last weekend and we know that we have to improve leading into what's likely to be a bruising encounter in Cape Town." Rather than match South Africa's six-two bench split, Schmidt has retained the five-three selection among his reserves, although has replaced Langi Gleeson with Nick Champion de Crespigny. WALLABIES: Tom Wright, Max Jorgensen, Joseph Suaalii, Len Ikitau, Corey Toole, James O'Connor, Nic White, Rob Valetini, Fraser McReight (capt), Tom Hooper, Will Skelton, Nick Frost, Taniela Tupou, Billy Pollard, Tom Robertson. Reserves: Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Angus Bell, Zane Nonggorr, Jeremy Williams, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Tane Edmed, Tate McDermott, Andrew Kellaway.

O'Connor out as Schmidt opts for youth
James O'Connor's dreams of earning a recall for Australia's hosting of the British and Irish Lions appear over after the veteran playmaker was overlooked for the Wallabies squad to face Fiji in three weeks. Coach Joe Schmidt yesterday named a 36-strong squad to assemble on Sunday in Sydney for the Wallabies' season-opening international in Newcastle on July 6. The squad comprises 20 forwards and 16 backs, with Western Force back rower Nick Champion de Crespigny and Brumbies winger Corey Toole the only two uncapped players selected. But there was no room for O'Connor despite Schmidt last month saying the Wallabies could use the 34-year-old's experience following his impressive run of form in helping the Crusaders reach tomorrow's Super Rugby Pacific final against the Chiefs. Schmidt has instead pinned his faith in youth, with Noah Lolesio, Ben Donaldson and Tom Lynagh the three No10 options selected. O'Connor's omission leaves prop James Slipper, Australia's most-capped player, as the sole survivor from the squad that lost the 2013 series to the Lions 2-1. In-form Brumbies No 9 Ryan Lonergan and injured Queensland forwards Seru Uru and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto are other notable absentees but could yet force their way into a larger squad to be named for the Lions series on July 11. Waratahs hooker David Porecki has been named in the national set-up for the first time since captaining the team during the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, while another former leader, giant lock Will Skelton, is the only overseas based-player in the squad. Western Force stars de Crespigny, Dylan Pietsch, Harry Potter, Tom Robertson, Darcy Swain and Nic White have been picked but will remain on the west coast to prepare for the clash with the Lions in Perth tomorrow week. Wallabies squad.— Forwards: Allan Alaalatoa, Angus Bell, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Matt Faessler, Nick Frost, Langi Gleeson, Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight, Zane Nonggorr, Billy Pollard, David Porecki, Tom Robertson, Will Skelton, James Slipper, Darcy Swain, Carlo Tizzano, Taniela Tupou, Rob Valetini, Jeremy Williams, Harry Wilson. Backs: Filipo Daugunu, Ben Donaldson, Jake Gordon, Len Ikitau, Max Jorgensen, Andrew Kellaway, Noah Lolesio, Tom Lynagh, Tate McDermott, Hunter Paisami, Dylan Pietsch, Harry Potter, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Corey Toole, Nic White, Tom Wright.
