Tom Brady challenged in the broadcast booth as one of his biggest rivals takes lead role for first Chiefs game

A former rival of Tom Brady 's has been tapped to call YouTube 's first exclusive NFL game. The company will broadcast the season opener between the Chiefs and Chargers on September 5 in Brazil. And as reported by The Athletic, ex-NFL star Kurt Warner will be the lead analyst for the game. YouTube is still searching for a play-by-play man for its broadcast of the contest, which will take place at Corinthians Arena. Nonetheless, it should be an exciting assignment for Warner, who also calls games for Westwood One Radio and NFL Network. The former Rams and Cardinals star was in the NFL for 10 seasons alongside Brady, who bested him in Super Bowl XXXVI as the Patriots beat St. Louis' 'Greatest Show on Turf.' While Warner tossed 365 yards in the game (compared to Brady's 145 yards and a touchdown), it was the Patriots who won 20-17. Warner ultimately retired following the 2009 season with one Super Bowl ring and two MVPs before getting inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017. He's been on a staple on NFL Network since he hung up his cleats, while Brady - who only retired for good in 2023 - joined his fellow ex-passer in the broadcasting ranks last year. After signing a 10-year, $375million deal with Fox Sports, Brady served as the network's lead NFL game analyst and ultimately helped call the Eagles win over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. YouTube's broadcast of the Chiefs-Chargers game will also reportedly include alternative 'watch along' streams featuring influencers, in addition to the main broadcasting that Warner will co-host. However, the streamer is said to be having some difficulty finding a partner for Warner, with college and NFL games filling the rest of the weekend for broadcasters following the Friday night game. The Athletic reported previously that top networks were hesitant to allow streamers (including Netflix) to use their talent. However, CBS' Matt Ryan and Nate Burleson are said to be under consideration for Netflix's Christmas doubleheader. Another one of Brady's contemporaries, Drew Brees, has also been tapped by Netflix for one of those Christmas games.

Travis Kelce U-turns on NFL Brazil game anger after fuming he would be 'miserable' playing in 'f***ing heat'

Travis Kelce has backtracked on his fury over the Kansas City Chiefs starting the NFL season in Brazil, insisting he 'can't wait' to play in the South American country. Before the 2025 schedule was released in full, Kelce confirmed to older brother Jason on their New Heights podcast last week that the Chiefs' season opener was taking place in Brazil, something he didn't sound very happy about. It was later revealed that they will be facing the Los Angeles Chargers at Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo. After pointing out that he'll be playing football in the 'f***ing heat', the 35-year-old fumed: 'There's just something about getting close to the equator, I don't want to put on football uniform. I've been in Jacksonville in September, that's f***ing miserable. 'Sao Paulo, is that by the water? I'd rather it be dry than humid, I'm a sweaty guy. If it is humid, I am going to be miserable. But I am going to find a way to get a win.' Jason, whose former team the Philadelphia Eagles played in Brazil last season, also claimed that the field was 'atrocious' for their 2024 game against Green Bay Packers. Yet on this week's episode of the podcast, both Travis and Jason U-turned on their recent criticism of the NFL staging a fixture in the country. 'We're going to be on a bunch of f***ing primetime games,' the Chiefs star said. 'The season opener against the Chargers is going to be on a Friday night in beautiful Sao Paulo, Brazil. 'Can't wait to get down there and see all the Brazil fans and how they get rocking for some American football, man.' Jason then added: 'By the way, we heard everyone from Brazil. Apparently September in Sao Paulo is not hot, so we don't have to worry about that.' The Kelce brothers suggested they have received a backlash from Brazilian NFL fans in the wake of their comments last week, who accused them of turning their noses up at international fixtures. 'There were a lot of Brazil fans, I think, that were under the impression that we don't like international games. I think I speak for both me and Travis: we both love them,' Jason stressed. Travis then continued: 'Whaaaat? Sign me up! Don't get me wrong, I love playing in Arrowhead and I love playing in America, but I'm down for at least one or two international games. 'Get me out of this country, I want to play in front of some new fans man.' 'We just don't like the heat,' Jason explained. 'I'm wearing two shirts right now. It connects, here and the back... I'm a furry son of a b***h. Me and heat just don't do well together, Travis concluded. 'I apologize if it came off as that I'm not excited about this. I'm still excited, I'm just going to be doing some wardrobe changes throughout the game.' Kelce nearly retired in February in the aftermath of his Kansas City team losing the Super Bowl to the Eagles in New Orleans. But he eventually announced he is coming back for at least one more season, partly because he didn't want his glittering career to end on such a low note. If he is to lead the Chiefs back to Super Bowl glory, it is going to be the long way back to the top with the first game in South America. The Thanksgiving Chiefs game, which sees Patrick Mahomes face the team he grew up supporting, means Kelce and his men play another holiday on top of their Christmas game against Denver Broncos. Kelce could also be playing on his 36th birthday this year, with it falling on Sunday, October 5.

YouTube to stream NFL's Week 1 Chargers game in Brazil for free

The NFL is heading to YouTube for its Friday game in Week 1 of the 2025 season. The game will be in São Paulo, Brazil, at Corinthians Arena on Sept. 5, with the Los Angeles Chargers playing as the home team. The contest will be the first NFL game to stream live and for free on YouTube, the league and the digital platform announced Tuesday. Advertisement Last week, The Athletic reported that YouTube emerged as the heavy favorite to stream the Brazil game. The deal represents another landmark agreement between the league and a behemoth digital platform. However, this partnership differs from its agreements with Amazon and Netflix, as it is not tied to any paid subscription. Most of the world will be able to tune in, except for select countries, and subscribers to the cable-like, U.S.-based YouTube TV will also have access to it. The NFL will announce the Chargers' opponent Wednesday when it releases the full 2025 schedule at 8 p.m. ET. Week 1's Friday game will kick off the league's international slate, which includes the Minnesota Vikings playing back-to-back games in Dublin, Ireland, and London. There are no details yet on who will produce and call the Week 1 game for YouTube. The league's digital streaming partners do not have in-house game production crews for NFL games. Netflix paid CBS to produce its Christmas games. Prime Video has its own announcers, but has a long-term production agreement with NBC.

Google YouTube favored to stream exclusive NFL game for first time: Sources

Google YouTube has emerged as the heavy favorite to stream its first exclusive NFL game on Friday of the opening week, sources briefed on the discussions told The Athletic on Thursday. The deal would represent another landmark agreement between the league and a behemoth digital platform that is redefining how fans watch games. Advertisement However, this partnership would be different from the agreements with Amazon and Netflix, as it is anticipated not to be tied to any paid subscription. The game is expected to be available globally for free on YouTube. It would be free in the United States, as well, while subscribers to the cable-like and U.S.-based YouTube TV will be able to access through that service, as well. The game will be played in São Paulo, Brazil, at Corinthians Arena, with the Los Angeles Chargers already slated to be one of the teams involved. An official announcement will likely occur next week during Advertising Upfronts, when networks and platforms like to make big news. Indeed, the NFL announced Thursday that it will reveal its international games on Tuesday, followed by the full NFL schedule the next day. Google YouTube and the NFL both declined to comment. Sports Business Journal had previously reported YouTube as a possibility for the game. While this would be the first exclusive game streamed on YouTube, the service is in the midst of a seven-year contract worth around $14 billion with the NFL for the rights to Sunday Ticket. Sunday Ticket is a subscription product that allows fans to watch out-of-market games of their favorite teams. The games are simulcast and produced by Fox and CBS on Sundays. The NFL continues to increase its relationships with digital partners. In 2023, the league began an 11-season agreement with newcomer Amazon Prime Video for Thursday Night Football, while continuing with ESPN, NBC, Fox and CBS. The deals are worth $110 billion. Since then, the league has struck a partnership with Netflix to have a doubleheader on Christmas. Last season, the Brazil game was exclusively on Peacock, the streaming service of NBC. After the 2029 season, the NFL has opt-outs with Amazon, NBC, Fox and CBS. Following the 2030 season, the NFL can opt out of its agreement with ESPN's Monday Night Football. With the NBA's 11-year, $76 billion contracts with ESPN, Prime Video and NBC/Peacock set to begin next year, the NFL is expected to either opt out or use the threat of doing so to garner even more money when the 2030s begin. Advertisement The exact price of what Google YouTube would pay for the opening week game is not yet known, but it would likely be around or a little more than the $105 million that Peacock spent for last year's matchup between the Eagles and the Packers in Brazil. The other matter at hand is who will produce and call the games, which is still undetermined. The digital streamers do not have in-house game production crews to produce NFL games on their own. Netflix paid CBS to produce its Christmas games. Prime Video has its own announcers, but has a long-term production agreement with NBC.
