Michael Jordan celebrates wife's birthday at buzzy new West Palm cocktail lounge
WEST PALM BEACH — Trendy cocktail lounge Mary Lou's has been turning heads since it opened in January in an unconventional space — an iconic former bait-and-beer shop called the Corner Store on Southern Boulevard, a short jaunt across the bridge from Mar-a-Lago.
The throwback-style club, which seeks to evoke 1970s-era Palm Beach glamor with muraled walls, leopard-print furniture and a disco ball, has been packing in revelers and generating online buzz.
Last month the West Palm Beach nightspot received a visit from one of the biggest boldface names around: basketball legend Michael Jordan.
Jordan, whose main residence is in Jupiter, stopped by the club Saturday, April 5, with his wife, Yvette Prieto, and friends to watch the DJ duo Forester perform.
Since then, videos of him at Mary Lou's have been making rounds on social media, including one that shows Jordan dancing to Kendrick Lamar's hit "Not Like Us," and one showing Jordan greeting the DJs as he departs.
'M.J. requested his wife's favorite songs and they danced with their friends,' a club publicist said via email. 'Overall it was a fun, great evening.'
Jordan, widely considered the greatest basketball player in history, married Prieto in 2013 at The Church of Bethesda-By-The-Sea in Palm Beach.
As The Palm Beach Post reported in November, Mary Lou's is named after the late fashion and business entrepreneur Mary Lou Curtis, who had a branch of her boutique clothing store La Shack in Palm Beach and is the grandmother of the club's co-founder, Alex Melillo.
The unique building with the conical roof where the club exists today was long known as the Corner Store, an Old Florida icon that for a half-century sold bait and an eclectic mix of craft beers and wines, catering to both fisherman and well-heeled Palm Beachers.
Today, Mary Lou's website describes the lounge as 'a love letter to a bygone era — where velvet booths, candlelit tables, and the hum of laughter set the stage for long, lingering nights.'
The club is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 5 p.m. until late. For more information visit
