Tiruchi's new walking track and inclusive park a hit with residents

The newly inaugurated walking track and inclusive park with recreation facilities for all sections of people, including persons with disabilities and elders, on Race Course Road in Tiruchi, has been a breath of fresh air for residents. The one-of-its-kind park in the city, which has been established on the walking tracks around the Anna Stadium in Khajamalai at a cost of ₹7.52 crore under Corporation General Funds, has gained popularity among the public. About 2.1 km of the existing tracks were redeveloped, and the space between the tracks was utilised to develop activity-based recreational spaces. Walking tracks with decorative trees, modern LED lamps, and granite benches were installed, and provisions for yoga and meditation for senior citizens, an open-air gym, a play area for children, and wheelchair access have been provided. The tiles on the walking tracks have been replaced with anti-slippery pedestrian platforms to ensure the safety of users while the children's park is equipped with modern play equipment and amenities. The project was aimed at encouraging non-motorised transport and walking among residents. 'The park and walking track are a perfect spot to unwind and get some exercise. Since it is summer holidays, children are enjoying themselves and are away from mobile and television,' said S. Vinotha, a visitor. Welcoming the initiative, N. Jamaludeen, a civic activist, pointed out that Tiruchi has very few entertainment and recreation spots and that the new walking track with amenities is a great addition to the city's infrastructure. 'The civic body has set its eyes on redeveloping open spaces and waterbodies, which is crucial in creating a liveable and sustainable environment. However, the authorities should focus on maintaining the park and equipment, preventing public littering and curbing stray dog menace to attract more visitors,' said Ghouse Baig, a city resident.
