Record heat across Alberta Thursday, 2 tornadoes confirmed from Monday's storms

According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast, Friday will be cool, Saturday hot, and Sunday seasonal. Twenty record highs were set in Alberta on Thursday. That includes both the Edmonton Blatchford weather station and the station at Edmonton International Airport. Blatchford hit 32.7 C, breaking the old record of 32.2 C set in 1936. 32.7 C also appears to be the third-hottest May temperature on record. EIA's high of 32.8 C also breaks the old record of 31.1 C set in 1986. We'll post the full list of records below, but first let's deal with the tornadoes from earlier in the week. Severe thunderstorms last Monday produced two tornadoes at Atmore and Avenir in northern Alberta. Those communities are about 200 km northeast of Edmonton (near Plamondon). The Northern Tornadoes Project did on-site storm assessments and has determined the tornado near Atmore at 7 p.m. had an estimated wind speed of 175 km/h. There was some damage to a few homes and the preliminary rating is EF1. At 7:25 p.m., a tornado near Avenir did some damage to trees in the area and has a preliminary rating of EF1. There are no tornado reports from the severe storms that hit Alberta on Thursday evening, although there are reports of wind damage from gusts in the 60 to 100 km/h range. Some of the strongest gusts were reported at the Edmonton International Airport. That area had gusts in the 115-130 km/h range. Those storms came on the heels of Thursday's record-setting heat. Edmonton weather: Weekend outlook has some heat, storms, smoke and a cool down

According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast, Friday will be cool, Saturday hot, and Sunday seasonal. Still a little breezy in the Edmonton area this morning, but the wind should back off midday and this afternoon. Sunshine and temperatures hitting 23 or 24 C this afternoon. That's a few degrees above average, but a long ways off yesterday's record-setting 33 C. There were 20 new record highs set in Alberta on Thursday ahead of thunderstorms that brought damaging wind gusts to some areas, including southern parts of the Edmonton region. Edmonton International Airport recorded wind gusts over 100 km/h. The climate station on site had gusts to 115 km/h and the main weather station had a 130 km/h gust. The Blatchford weather station maxed out at 60 km/h. Heat returns for Saturday as temperatures climb to near 30 C in the Edmonton area in the afternoon. However, another cold front will blast through the area Saturday night. Showers and thunderstorms (possibly severe) will move through areas from around Edson northeast to Fort McMurray in the afternoon and then push ESE. There's a slight risk of some supper-time showers/storms in the Edmonton region Saturday, but the best chance will be through the nighttime hours Saturday. Behind that cold front, we'll drop to a high near 18 C on Sunday. Wildfire smoke is not expected to be an issue in the Edmonton area through the day Saturday, but we may see it move in for Saturday night and early Sunday. Most of the modelling has the smoke moving out of the area for Sunday. Northern Alberta, especially the northeast, could have smoky skies through much of the weekend with a chance for some very thick smoke on Sunday. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Mainly sunny. Breezy this morning, wind easing in the afternoon. High: 24 Tonight - Mainly clear. 9pm: 22 Saturday - Mix of sun & cloud. 30% chance of a late-afternoon shower or thunderstorm. Morning Low: 15 Afternoon High: 30 40% chance of showers/thunderstorms in the evening & overnight. Sunday - Partly cloudy in the morning. Sunny in the afternoon. As CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel reports, there is a chance Edmonton will see storms on Thursday. As CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel reports, there is a chance Edmonton will see storms on Thursday. 31 C today; windy and risk of storms later Heat warnings continue for most of Alberta today as temperatures will get to the upper 20s/low 30s again this afternoon. Edmonton hit 29 C on Wednesday and should get a couple degrees hotter today. I'm going with a forecast high of 31 C. A cold front slashes across the province moving from west to east this afternoon and tonight bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms to most of Alberta. The showers and storms will develop in west and northwestern Alberta this afternoon and we're expecting them to move through the Edmonton region this evening. There's a high risk of some severe thunderstorms affecting a few spots, particularly in central and north-central Alberta. Those storms will have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy downpours. We'll know more about the location of those storms later this afternoon as they start to develop, so pay attention to any weather alerts that get issued through the day. As always, most areas will not get hit with severe storms. However, I think almost everybody will at least get some strong, gusty wind and rain. Temperatures drop back to a high of about 22-24 C on Friday. But, we'll heat up again on Saturday and possibly see some more showers and thunderstorms Saturday night. Those storms will, once again, have the potential to turn severe in some areas. A lengthier stretch of cooler temperatures will settle in for next week with daytime highs in the 18 to 22 C range from Sunday through Thursday. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Mainly sunny. Wind: S 20 gusting to 40 km/h High: 31 Tonight - 70% chance of showers and/or thunderstorms.
