For Colourpop, Dupe Culture & Community Reign Supreme
LOS ANGELES, CA - MARCH 24: A general view of atmosphere at Jaime King x ColourPop Launch #ALCHEMY ... More at Chateau Marmont on March 24, 2016 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo byfor ColourPop) When it comes to makeup, it's no secret that the field is oversaturated. At every turn, a celebrity is starting a new beauty brand, or cult-classics are releasing new state-of-the-art products, touting luxury and high-end. In 2024, the global cosmetics market generated an estimated $646.20 billion in revenue, with the U.S. market alone accounting for $100 billion. However, despite the high numbers, the beauty industry is beginning to see a shift in the desire for luxury cosmetics. Dupe culture has become popular over the last year, as consumers search for ways to achieve the same trending makeup looks while saving every penny they can. Roughly one-third of all makeup users utilize dupes, and this number climbs to almost half for millennials and Gen Z, indicating a shift. Consumers are no longer relying on the household name a brand may carry, but rather on whether they can achieve the same results for less. While luxury brands struggle to remain innovative and beat the dupe culture trend, one California brand has thrived off of it. Cult Classics Founded in California, Colourpop Cosmetics is known for its colorful and affordable products, from eyeshadow to gel liners, foundation, and more. True to its name, the brand is known for its eclectic and colorful collaborations, some of which include the New York Knicks, Winx Club, and most recently, New Moon of the famous Twilight series. The brand first gained popularity in 2014 with the release of its Super Shock Shadow. The now cult-favorite and best-selling item taunted something that had never been done before: a creamy, high-pigmented shadow for less than $10. It was almost blasphemous. 'When we launched with the crazy idea to sell $5 eyeshadows online, we were able to build a direct connection to our loyal community–something we've never lost sight of,' says Vivian Weng, Brand President at ColourPop. Weng's analysis of the community is spot-on. At the time of launch, Colourpop took a gamble. For consumers, colorful packaging and an affordable version in the midst of high-end hype drew curiosity. 'Back in 2014, I was going to IMATS frequently and blogging, and in the whole MAC world. I loved me some variety of color, but I wanted it to be cruelty-free free and ColourPop came out with their super shock shadows,' says Emma, account owner of Colourpopcult. 'This was a novelty at the time, to have a cushy, creamlike product that was both pigmented and affordable. They were $5 each, which made it an easy addiction to collect every shade, every drop. There were even some crazy conspiracies because how could they be so inexpensive?' The shadows exploded, and Colourpop quickly grew to fame. Single shadows quickly turned into full palettes, they released foundations, blushes, shadow sticks, and lip products, all while built on the promise of affordability that didn't compromise quality. A Colorful Community While far-out at the time, the idea worked. According to ECDB, ColourPop's online store generated $147 million in revenue in 2024. The e-commerce world saw a boom during the pandemic; however, as the economy faces new challenges amid inflation and tariffs, the rate of growth has started to slow compared to pre-pandemic times. However, the California brand stands a chance against taking a hit among the harsh waters, according to analysts. 'Colourpop's business model of offering affordable, high-quality makeup products is sustainable, especially in the short to medium term. However, its long-term success ultimately depends on their ability to innovate and stay ahead of trends while maintaining product quality and affordability,' says Anna Yen, CFA at MoneyLion and analyst. 'Colourpop has a good chance of lasting long as long as they continue to meet consumer demands and adapt to market changes.' As dupe culture began to explode within the last two years, the brand would see even more praise. Glowing reviews of their lip masks, which were an alternative for the popular Laneige sleeping masks populated over YouTube, while the recent heart-topped blushes that envied Rare Beauty's Soft Pinch blush flew off the shelves at Ulta Beauty. Open any Colourpop reel on Instagram or trending TikTok video, and the response speaks for itself. Tens of thousands of views and comments flooded with heart eyes and comments pouring praise. The brand even now has dedicated fan pages, including Colourpop WOC and Emma's account, consumers who have dedicated themselves to the brand and keeping up with every release, and providing swatches and creating bright and bold looks. 'We focus on building relationships that feel authentic and mutually beneficial, prioritizing partnerships that amplify our creative message, while oftentimes leaning into nostalgia, emotion, and whimsy,' Weng reveals. The brand thrives heavily on influencer relationships and licensing partnerships, with recent partnerships with former Dance Moms stars Brooke and Paige Hyland. It even tugs on consumer heartstrings with nostalgic cartoon collaborations, including Winnie the Pooh and The Powerpuff Girls, to name a few. 'They found a niche with duping products but they also have great ideas and are innovators in the field,' Emma continues. 'I don't see them just as a dupe company, it would be a disservice to reduce them to that. Their creative team is always hard at work with breaking the mold in terms of collabs and different types of products for all skin tones.' As makeup brands continue to face challenges to remain afloat, from the rise in tariffs to making sure their products are inclusive under the watchful and critical eye of influencers, the West Coast-based brand believes that no matter how new the product or how fancy the packaging, success boils down to one thing: community. 'The beauty industry is very tight knit so we like to purposefully review what our community is saying and take it into account,' says Weng of Colourpop. 'Versus simply replicating what is already available.'

Stop Hoarding Your Old Beauty Products, And Buy These
An E.l.f. Cosmetics affordable cleansing balm that starts out solid, melts into an oil, and then turns into a milky texture to rinse off clean. It'll be so satisfying to watch your makeup practically wash away. Plus, it contains hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides to leave your skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Or, a beloved K-beauty cleansing oil designed to clean makeup residue, potentially clear up blackheads and sebum, and help minimize the appearance of pores and acne. Its hypoallergenic and gentle formula plays well with sensitive and acne-prone skin, and many reviewers actually use it as a step in their double cleansing routine. Double cleansing = using an oil-based cleanser (like this one) and then a water-based cleanser afterward! An E.l.f. Cosmetics melting lip balm in the shade "Ecstatic," which reviewers say gives the same effortless, your-lips-but-better look as Clinique's "Black Honey" — but for a fraction of the price. This balm-lipstick hybrid glides right on, so you can add a sheer wash of color while keeping your lips hydrated. It's the kind of low-maintenance, throw-it-in-every-bag essential that makes getting ready way easier. A hair wax stick formulated with beeswax, vitamin E, avocado oil, and more plant-based ingredients to provide a nongreasy, nonhardening solution to smoothing frizzy hairs and stray strands. This is especially great for fans of the slicked-back ponytail look. A tube of Essence Lash Princess mascara to give you lashes so dramatic, no one will believe you when you tell them you bought it for less than $5 on Amazon. No need to spend hours wrestling with falsies to get the long lashes of your dreams. Reviewers also rave that this lasts all day. Thank goodness! You have better things to do than reapply throughout the day. Or an E.l.f. tubing mascara that wraps each lash and gives it a length only false lashes could compete with. PLUS, it's resistant to clumping, flaking, and if THAT wasn't enough, it comes off so easily that you'll no longer dread the process that is wiping off your mascara at the end of the day. A rosemary mint scalp and hair-strengthening oil formulated with a combination of over 30 essential oils and nutrients to help nourish your locks, possibly increase circulation, and potentially provide relief to an itchy scalp. It's great for all hair types and works particularly well on types 3a–4c hair. A colorful eyeshadow palette featuring 40 matte, shimmer, and metallic shades that'll make doing your eye makeup feel like painting. If you remember the James Charles x Morphe palette but never bought it because of its $40 price tag, then this veryyy similar under-$10 alternative is perfect. A set of freckle pens (yes, you read that right) if you've always been a lil' jelly of your friends with natural freckles. Now, you can rock 'em too! The best part about these pens is they're waterproof, anti-stain, and feature a quick-drying formula so you can go about your day with confidence that your little secret won't be revealed via smudging. A lightweight snail essence (no snails are harmed in the making of this product, promise) that'll deliver seriously good hydration, and can help brighten your skin and reduce/prevent acne. Plus, it sinks in fast without any sticky residue, so your face feels refreshed and bouncy, instead of a glazed donut left out too long. A One/Size blurring setting powder — consider yourself warned: You will kick yourself for not owning this sooner because wowie, this stuff is GOOD. It helps to set makeup for long-lasting wear and without looking cakey, but wait! It does more! It also helps to decrease shine and the appearance of fine lines and pores. Airbrushed skin, here you come. And if powder isn't your thing, then this Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is a MUST! It'll help prevent smudging and fading. For context, it kept one BuzzFeed Swiftie's makeup in place ALL night when she went to The Eras Tour (a 3.5-hour-long show, mind you). If that's not a testament to how well it works, IDK what is. The Olay Super Serum body wash — a little luxury for your shower that actually earns its spot in the corner with your shampoo and conditioner bottles. Packed with niacinamide, peptides, and vitamin C, it's like a fancy skincare cocktail, but for your whole body. Basically, if your skin could put in a special request at the bar, this would be it. Or, a moisturizing body wash containing notes of white jasmine, red currant, and sweet amber to help make shower time a whole lot more luxurious for under $10. Reviewers say it smells JUST like Baccarat Rouge having to spend $335 on a bottle of perfume! An E.l.f. liquid blush — whether you've been on the liquid blush train for some time now or you're looking to hop aboard, this less-than-$10(!!!) option is the perfect pick. It boasts gorgeous pigmentation and blends so smoothly. And! Reviewers say it's very similar to Rare Beauty's Soft Pinch liquid blush (which is more than double the price). A pack of overnight hydrogel masks because anything that works tirelessly to improve skin while you channel your inner Sleeping Beauty is an automatic "add to cart" moment. To use, just pop it on after your nighttime skin routine, leave it on while you sleep (don't worry, it won't leave residue on your pillow), and remove it the next morning! It could help hydrate, brighten, tighten, and lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A no-fuss self-tanning mousse that delivers a deep, bronzed glow minus the streaks or orange tones. This fast-developing formula gives you that just-back-from-vacation look without the sun damage. Because a great tan should be that easy! A popular Nivea gel cream featuring a lightweight formula and a star ingredient called Q10 to help make your skin feel oh-so-smooth. Many reviewers report noticing that their skin was firmer with consistent use. Oh, and did I mention it costs less than $15?!!! An under-eye brightener that's gone super viral super quick and FOR GOOD REASON! This awesome stuff contains hyaluronic acid and shea butter to nourish and brighten the area under your eyes. Your new holy grail for concealing dark circles hath arrived! A wake-up eye gel formulated with hyaluronic acid and caffeine to up your eyes — and by that, we mean keep the skin around them hydrated while helping to cut down the appearance of puffiness and swelling. Evidence of the fact that you keep going to sleep too late because you can't stop watching Real Housewives, begone! A L'Oreal glow-enhancing lotion that'll give the expensive bronzing drops you've been eyeing a run for their money. This glycerin-infused illuminator can be mixed with your favorite moisturizer or foundation and worn as a makeup base, OR as a highlight or bronzer. Glowy skin, here you come. Bio-Oil, a cult-favorite skincare oil to help reduce the appearance of scars left behind by acne, pregnancy, injuries, or surgeries, thanks to a powerful (but gentle) combo of vitamin A, vitamin E, sunflower, lavender, and chamomile oils. Your skin will thank you. A 2-in-1 eyeliner that also happens to be false eyelash glue because your time is precious, so saving yourself the step of having to apply eyelash glue OVER your eyeliner without smudging it in the process will really pay off in the long run. A set of Hero Cosmetics acne patches you can apply over a popped whitehead. Simply put the patch over a zit, let it sit overnight or throughout the day, peel it off, and watch it take all the pore-clogging gunk with it. A fan-favorite E.l.f. Cosmetics primer that glides on like butter and helps reduce the appearance of pores. In turn, this makes for SEAMLESS makeup application. When I say your foundation will GLIDE right onto your skin and look airbrushed, I mean it!!! A body gel cream featuring a fast-absorbing formula that's essentially a drink of water for your skin. You may already be familiar with Neutrogena's Hydro Boost water gel face cream, and it's time to bring that same moisturizing goodness to the rest of your body. A styling mousse that's especially great for folks with curly or textured hair. It's made with coconut and shea oils to help give locks some volume, definition, shine, and hold without unwanted stiffness. Say adios, crunchy hair! A Briotech spray reviewers say is a GREAT alternative to the pricier Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Spray — both are formulated with hypochlorous acid. It'll help calm inflammation and redness. Just give your skin a little spritz and bask in the relief! An E.l.f. Cosmetics creamy color corrector that boasts it can help camouflage skin discoloration, dullness, redness, and blemishes. It comes in five shades, so all you have to do is find the right color for your skin tone and apply it before applying your foundation or concealer. A collagen hair protein treatment to help repair damage from things like heat, sun, and dye, just to name a few, because we want you to be able to do all the cool, experimental things with your hair. Go ahead — dye it, fry it, do whatever makes your heart happy. This stuff has your back. A multi-balm hydrating collagen stick featuring a portable design that's super easy to bring on the go anytime your face is in need of a lil' moisture boost. Not only that, but this nifty stick may just help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, and smooth fine lines. An eyebrow soap designed to help give sparse brows a more volumized look. It comes with an easy-to-use spoolie, and the soap is made of mild ingredients, so you can achieve that ~on fleek~ style quickly, easily, and for less money than the name brands — buh-bye, Anastasia Beverly Hills. A biotin shampoo that could help hair look thicker by strengthening strands to prevent breakage. It's made with a blend of botanical extracts to help nourish and cleanse your scalp. If your shower had a VIP section, this bottle would definitely be on the list. A pack of exfoliating pads aimed at helping reduce the appearance of pores. I know, I know — it sounds too good to be true, but gimme a second to tell you how these work. One side of the pad (the ~exfoliation side~) cleans out pores and dead skin cells, while the other side of the pad (the ~embossed side~) smooths and tones for a silky finish. Don't believe me? See for yourself! A long-lasting liquid eyeliner that just so happens to be waterproof — a must for anyone whose tear ducts are suffering the consequences of summertime allergens. It's also great for those who live in an eternal state of sweat during the warmer months but still want their makeup to stay intact. Yes, it is possible! A L'Oreal Paris rinse-out lamellar water treatment with a cult following that'll leave your locks looking shiny and silky in just eight seconds. Salon-level hair all day, every day, BB. It's like an espresso shot for your strands — fast and effective. Alexa, cue Sabrina Carpenter. ☕ A spray-application foundation that's super buildable for customizing your own level of coverage. Not to mention, it's v lightweight — and thank goodness for that because foundation that leaves your skin feeling oily and weighed down is just NOT the vibe anymore! When you want an airbrushed look, you also want an ~airy~ feel. A Neutrogena moisturizing face sunscreen you'll want to add to your daily skincare routine PRONTO. Containing vitamin E and SPF 60, this serum provides hydration, UVA and UVB protection, and works great as a makeup primer, too! Oh, and it does it all without leaving behind a white cast on your skin.

Rare Beauty reveals Selena Gomez's favourite makeup products
Imagine having Selena Gomez as your boss. For Rare Beauty's Chief Product Officer, Joyce Kim, this is her day-to-day reality. And according to Joyce, even after six years of working together, the buzz of receiving FaceTime calls from the international superstar still feels 'bonkers.' The LA-based businesswoman was recently in Sydney as the keynote speaker for the Vogue Codes 2025 summit and during her speech she revealed some surprising facts about the pop star. For instance, Selena is so dedicated to her beauty brand, she often spends her weekends dressed in disguise and hanging out at her local Sephora. 'She sneaks into the store, usually wearing a mask, stands near the Rare Beauty gondola and just listens to what customers are saying,' Joyce told the audience. While she was in town we got the chance to pick Joyce's brain on all things Rare Beauty - from Selena's favourite makeup hacks, her must-have beauty products and the one beauty item that was the most frustrating to perfect. WHAT'S SELENA GOMEZ LIKE AS A BOSS? 'She's so dreamy, I don't know how else to describe it. Being in her physical presence is dreamy. She's so kind and so vulnerable. She makes you feel like you were the only person in the room… it's so romantical.' WHAT'S THE ONE PRODUCT SELENA USES EVERYDAY? 'The Brow Harmony Flexible Lifting Gel, it's her go-to jam. She uses it every day. She needs to leave the house with her brows done and that's her little black dress of 'I feel put together'.' Brow Harmony Flexible Lifting Gel, $34 at Sephora WHAT OTHER PRODUCTS ARE IN SELENA'S MAKEUP ROUTINE? 'Her makeup artist, Hung Vanngo, is the best and he uses a lot of Hope and Happy on her - he likes a tonal look. So if it's Hope on the cheek, he'll do Hope on the lip in the soft pinch lip oil.' Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush (Hope), $45 at Sephora Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Luminous Powder Blush (Hope), $48 at Sephora WHAT ARE YOUR THREE BEST BEAUTY HACKS? 'First one is layering liquid and powder blushes. I love blush. I love that it makes me look alive. I love a liquid blush and then a powder blush right on top of it to really hold it in and set it in place.' Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Luminous Powder Blush (Happy), $48 at Sephora 'Second one is I like to use a fluffy eyeshadow brush for my concealer. I think it gives it more of an airbrushed look verse just a flat foundation brush.' 'And I love to use bronzer as a little hit of eyeshadow on the crease to give it a little bit of depth.' WHAT'S YOUR CHEAPEST BEAUTY HACK? 'This is very questionable, but I love Johnson & Johnson Baby Lotion. I know it's crazy. I use it for my daily moisturiser. I also use it to remove eye makeup if I don't have an eye makeup remover with me, it really breaks down waterproof eye makeup. And also, this is kind of gross, but I also use it to shave.' WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST COMMON MAKEUP MISHAP? 'Skip sunscreen. Oh my gosh, I meet so many people that don't use sunscreen. You've got to put the sunscreen on, from your forehead down to your shoulders.' Always read the label and follow directions for use. Prolonged sun exposure should be avoided. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE YOU IN YOUR MAKEUP ROUTINE? 'I'm a tinted moisturiser girl. Obviously I'm a little bias but I love our tinted moisturiser.' Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Luminous Powder Blush (Cheer), $48 at Sephora THE ONE ITEM THAT'S ALWAYS IN YOUR HANDBAG? 'My lips are really dry all the time, so I have to have some sort of gloss balm. 'I also love the Biodance collagen mask. I literally will sleep in it for eight hours, I'll wake up, peel it off and I feel younger.' Biodance Bio Collagen Real Deep Mask, $29 at Amazon Australia WHICH PRODUCT TOOK THE LONGEST TO PERFECT? 'Mascara. It's such a fine balance of formula, brush wiper and the type of lashes you have. It's so personal. For the development, we tried 30 iterations of different formulas and brushes.'

Leonard Lauder, philanthropist who globalized family cosmetic business - Estee Lauders Companies, dies at age 92
NEW YORK — Leonard Lauder, a renowned philanthropist who expanded the family cosmetics business into a worldwide empire, has died at the age of 92. Estee Lauders Cos. announced the news in a release on Sunday and said he died on Saturday surrounded by family. Lauder, the oldest son of Estee and Joseph H. Lauder, who founded the company in 1946, formally joined the New York business in 1958. Over more than six decades, Lauder played a key role in transforming the business from a handful of products sold under a single brand in U.S. stores to a multi-brand global giant. He had held the title of chairman emeritus at the time of his death. Estee Lauder's products are sold in roughly 150 countries and territories under brand names including Clinique and Aveda, according to the company's latest annual report. The company generated sales of nearly US$16 billion in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024, the filing said. Estee Lauder went public in 1995, but members of Lauder family still have about 84 per cent of the voting power of common stock, according to the latest annual filing. Lauder served as president of The Estée Lauder Cos. from 1972 to 1995 and as CEO from 1982 through 1999. He was named chairman in 1995 and served in that role through June 2009. Under his stewardship, Lauder created the company's first research and development laboratory, brought in professional management at every level, and was the impetus behind The Estée Lauder Cos.' international expansion, helping to spearhead the company's sales and profits exponentially, according to the company. Lauder led the launch of many brands including Aramis, Clinique, and Lab Series, among others. Until his death, he remained deeply involved in the company's acquisition strategy, including the acquisitions of such brands as Aveda, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone London and MAC, the company said. During his years as chairman emeritus, Lauder was closely involved in the business and day-to-day operations and was a constant fixture at its global headquarters in New York and at its stores around the world until the time of his death, the company said. 'Throughout his life, my father worked tirelessly to build and transform the beauty industry, pioneering many of the innovations, trends, and best practices that are foundational to the industry today,' said William P. Lauder, son and chair of the board at The Estée Lauder Companies in a statement. 'He was the most charitable man I have ever known, believing that art and education belonged to everyone, and championing the fight against diseases such as Alzheimer's and breast cancer. ' Lauder was a longtime patron of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and, in 2013, pledged his 78-piece collection of Cubist art to the museum in the largest single philanthropic gift in the museum's history. He later added five major works to that pledged gift, the company said. In concert with his Cubist collection donation, he helped establish the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art at the Met to support a program of fellowships, focused exhibitions, and public lectures. He also was the Whitney Museum of American Art's chairman emeritus and a trustee from 1977 to 2011. Lauder was married to Evelyn H. Lauder, who had been the senior corporate vice president at the cosmetic company and the founder of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, from 1959 until she passed away in 2011. On Jan. 1, 2015, Lauder married Judy Glickman Lauder, a philanthropist and internationally recognized photographer. Lauder was born in 1933 in New York City. He was a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, and the Officer Candidate School of the United States Navy. Lauder studied at Columbia University's graduate school of business. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and as a Navy reservist, for which the U.S. Navy Supply Corps Foundation later recognized him with its Distinguished Alumni Award. In addition to his wife and son William, Lauder is survived by his other son Gary M. Lauder and wife, Laura Lauder; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many stepchildren and step grandchildren, as well as his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, and wife, Jo Carole Lauder, and their daughters, Aerin Lauder and Jane Lauder. Article by Anne D'innocenzio.
