NHL Insider: Oilers Have Reached Out About Red Wings' Goalie Prospect
Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has managed to assemble one of the deepest prospect pools in the National Hockey League, which includes two highly regarded goaltenders expected to develop into future starters. 2023 First Round selection Sebastian Cossa and 2023 Second Round selection Trey Augustine are both considered to have tremendous potential and could form one of the league's most formidable tandems in the coming seasons. Appearing on The Sekeres & Price Show, League Insider Cam Robinson - Content Director and Director of Film Scouting for Elite Prospects - revealed that he's been told the Oilers have reached out to Detroit about potentially acquiring Cossa to present to their fans as their goaltender of the future. "I've heard that they're looking a little more long term, and their field of vision is a little wider here," Robinson said of the Oilers. "I've been told they've contacted Detroit, I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine and think it was just a non-starter. Steve Yzerman and company really love that kid, and they should." "But they have a 6'6", 6'7" former first rounder in Sebastian Cossa sitting there, who is slowly been progressing up the way, played a full season in the East Coast League," Robinson continued. "They're not soured on him by any means, but I think they're hoping that he'd be quicker along the path, and the fact that they have Augustine there in the Red Wings system potentially allows him to be an expendable chip." Cossa has already begun his professional career in the American Hockey League after having played for the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings and the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. This past season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Cossa amassed a record of 21-15-5 while posting a 2.45 goals-against average. But Cossa's numbers weren't as strong down the final stretch of the regular season, and he faltered during the Calder Cup Playoffs, finding himself benched after surrendering nine goals in just two games. Meanwhile, Augustine has thrived not only with the Michigan State Spartans but with the United States in international play. "If Edmonton does want to get themselves someone that they can tag as like, 'Here's our goalie of the future that's maybe only a year or two years away', he'd be a great bet to go on," Robinson concluded. Unless the Oilers were to present Yzerman with a Godfather-style offer he couldn't refuse, the chances of Detroit trading Cossa are remote. At the same time, Yzerman did not sound optimistic about Cossa seeing NHL action in the 2025-26 season. "Today, I'm not prepared to say he's going to play in the NHL next year," Yzerman said on April 29 of Cossa. "He's got to do more." If the Oilers want to acquire a young goaltender with a high ceiling, they'll have to find a deal elsewhere, as the Red Wings aren't going to be parting ways with either Cossa or Augustine. Detroit Red Wings call up goaltender Sebastian Cossa under emergency conditions
DENVER — A day after losing Petr Mrazek to injury, the Detroit Red Wings called up goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa. The team listed the call-up as under emergency conditions, though both Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot are also on the team. A team can only designate a call-up as an emergency if it does not have the required personnel available at a certain spot, such as the two goaltenders needed to dress for a game. The Wings did not hold a morning skate Tuesday at Ball Arena, ahead of their evening game against the Colorado Avalanche. Lyon was in net for Monday's 5-1 victory at Utah Hockey Club, taking over after Mrazek suffered an undisclosed injury 1:36 into the game. Immediately following that game, coach Todd McLellan indicated Talbot would start against the Avalanche. The No. 15 selection from the 2021 draft won his NHL debut on Dec. 9 against the Buffalo Sabres, including turning away two of three shootout attempts. The Red Wings are still rebuilding, but they appear closer than ever to closing that chapter of their story. To expedite the process, they need to acquire more young players who can have a big impact. Right now, they have many prospects and draft picks they could use to acquire these impactful players. However, some of their prospects should remain with the team because they are better suited to be part of the solution instead of being an asset used to acquire another player. These are the three prospects that the Red Wings need to make sure they don't lose in any trades. The 19-year-old Axel Sandin-Pellikka is having a great season in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). The 17th overall draft selection from the 2023 NHL Entry Draft is playing in his second season in the SHL and is improving on his offensive totals. He currently has a 16-10-5 record, a 2.38 goals against average (GAA), a .913 save percentage (SV%), and one shutout. With his great numbers, combined with his 6-foot-7, 220-lb frame, Cossa is shaping up to be a great starting goaltender. However, he will have some competition for that role in a few years. Finally, the Red Wings need to take a hard look if they ever consider trading Trey Augustine. Augustine may be smaller than Cossa, but his work this season isn't any less impressive. The 6-foot-1 and 183 lb netminder backstopped Team USA to a second straight World Junior Gold Medal. He's also been lights out in the NCAA. Augustine is in his second year with Michican State University. He currently has a 17-6-4 record to go with a 2.09 GAA, a .925 SV%, and two shutouts. Finding good offensive defenders and fantastic goaltenders is a tough job for an organization. Everything has a price. When it comes to hockey, you need to give to get. The "future considerations" loophole aside, if you want to acquire talent, you must draft, trade, or sign a free agent. With the trade deadline approaching, it's time to look at who could leave the Detroit Red Wings locker room. This is a list of players who are either rumored to be on the trade block or have expiring deals, making them appealing to teams making a Stanley Cup run. Here are four Red Wings players who could find themselves with a new team by the end of this year's trade deadline. A few things in life are guaranteed: death, taxes, and Vladimir Tarasenko popping up in trade rumors every season. All jokes aside, Elliotte Friedman has mentioned in the last 10 days that the Red Wings are potentially looking to move on from the veteran Russian forward. But how likely is it that the team moves on from him? His price tag isn't the greatest, but with the salary cap shooting up over the next three seasons, it wouldn't be difficult for another team to acquire him. The question lies with the acquiring team: why would they want him? The Florida Panthers feels like a fit, while others have hinted at the Toronto Maple Leafs. I also wouldn't count out the possibility of the Vegas Golden Knights making a play. Either way, I wouldn't count on Tarasenko playing out the rest of his contract in Detroit. The Red Wings crease is crowded like a $2 all-you-can-eat-sushi-buffet. Currently, the Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon duo are getting the job done for the Red Wings. With that being said, something has got to give. In the minors, they have prized prospect Sebastian Cossa, reclamation project Jack Campbell, and Ville Husso. Cossa has become the de facto starter, and Husso has accumulated the second-most starts among the netminders. However, Cossa's dominance and Campbell's serviceability make Husso more than expendable. The veteran winger didn't need new linemates, just a new boss calling the shots. That being said, he's on an expiring contract and performing well. If the return makes sense for the Red Wings, he could be traded to a contending team. He's already received one of four bonuses tied to his contract. His $1.5 million bonus was paid out after he played 10 games. He has another $1 million in bonuses remaining, two of which are tied to the playoffs. While Kane may stay with the Red Wings, his leaving to win a cup somewhere else should not be ruled out. Ultimately, only time will tell. But Red Wings fans should keep their eyes on these four players, as it's almost guaranteed that they won't all return next season.
