Walton County mandates safety stickers on low-speed vehicles for safety

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Walton County and law enforcement continue to crack down on LSV safety violations. They say they want to make sure everyone, from residents to visitors, knows that LSVs follow all the same rules as your car, with additional limitations on where you can drive them. 'The difference from an LSV and a golf cart is an LSV is a low-speed vehicle. It is exactly like your normal vehicle. The only difference here in Walton County in the state of Florida is an LSV is only supposed to be on roadways that are 35 mile an hour speed limit or less,' Sheriff deputy Dustin Cosson said. While the sticker is part of an ordinance, making it enforceable, the Walton County sheriff says they are focusing on informing the public. 'The important thing for us is that enforcement through education, we're not looking to write a bunch of tickets. There absolutely is going to be an extended grace period to this because it is a new thing, and it's different. But we just want to make sure that people are out there being safe and treating these levees exactly like their normal vehicle,' Cosson said. 'On the backside of the sticker, there's a QR code that takes you directly to our website, and it lists all the laws that are applicable to the state of Florida when it comes to low-speed vehicles.' The ordinance has been about a year in the making, but it isn't the first time local leaders have tried using stickers to push LSV safety. They previously worked with local rental companies to put a similar sticker on their windshields, but it was on a voluntary basis. Cosson said the most common violations include not wearing seatbelts, children not in proper car seats, unlicensed drivers, and driving on prohibited roads. Licensed drivers, of course, no drinking and driving. And please, please, please keep your children in child restraints if they need to be in one in a vehicle, do the same thing,' Cosson added. You can pick up a free sticker by visiting the Walton County Sheriff's substation on Santa Rosa Beach, the tax collector's office. Deputies will also have stickers in their vehicles.
