Naomi Osaka blows chance to reach Wimbledon fourth round, Ben Shelton wins in 55 seconds
Naomi Osaka blew a golden opportunity to reach the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time as the Japanese star was beaten by Russian world No 50 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Friday. Osaka was in a strong position after taking the first set on Court Two, but her bid to finally make the last 16 imploded as Pavlyuchenkova battled back to clinch a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. The 27-year-old is a four-time grand slam champion, but she has not won a major since 2021. Osaka's four previous appearances at Wimbledon ended in two third-round defeats and losses in the first and second rounds. Once again she fell short at the grass-court grand slam. Naomi Osaka's wait to reach Wimbledon fourth round goes on
Four-time major winner Naomi Osaka came up short in her quest to reach round four of Wimbledon for the first time after surrendering a one-set lead against former French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The former world number one – a two-time champion at both the US Open and Australian Open – was playing in the third round of the Championships for the first time in seven years. Advertisement She looked set to claim a small piece of personal history before failing to capitalise on two break points at 4-4 in set two and subsequently going down 3-6 6-4 6-4. Unseeded Osaka missed the 2021, 2022 and 2023 editions of the tournament due to mental health issues, injury and pregnancy respectively. She was visibly frustrated at being broken early in the deciding set, repeatedly banging her racket on the soft barrier at the back of Court Two. Aided by some fine forehand winners, the 27-year-old Japanese world number 53 hit back from 3-0 down to level, only for her Russian opponent to regain the initiative and progress in two hours and six minutes. Advertisement Pavlyuchenkova, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2016, will take on either British number three Sonay Kartal or France's Diane Parry for another place in the last eight.

Defending champion Krejcikova edges Dolehide at Wimbledon
LONDON :It was far from convincing, but Barbora Krejcikova kept her Wimbledon defence on track on Thursday - just - with a laboured 6-4 3-6 6-2 second round win over American Caroline Dolehide. The Czech creaked rather than cruised into the third round, moving past the American in a match as scrappy as a Henman Hill picnic after a seagull attack. Court Two spectators, many blissfully unaware they were watching the reigning champion, might be forgiven — Krejcikova herself barely looked the part. A season dogged by back and thigh niggles has left her short of sharpness, and her patchy 4-3 record for the season coming in was on full display in a match strewn with errors. Still, the 17th seed did just enough to scrape through to gentle applause and a sterner test ahead: 10th seed Emma Navarro, who won't be quite so generous.
