NFL Writer Places Cowboys' Backfield Decisions Under Fire
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When it comes to the backfield, the Dallas Cowboys have some question marks heading into the 2025 NFL season, hence the reason why they've been linked to a handful of trade suggestions for running backs. However, Dallas isn't expected to jump at the opportunity to make changes already. With some new faces in the backfield, the Cowboys look forward to heading into the new year with Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders headlining the unit. Despite their current confidence in the group, one NFL writer pointed to Dallas' decision to allow Rico Dowdle to walk in free agency as a move that contributes to what could be viewed as a mediocre offseason. "Dallas' running back situation is uninspiring," writes ESPN's Seth Walder. After five seasons in Dallas, Dowdle packed up and took on a new deal after his best season in a Cowboys uniform. While Dowdle won't break the bank with the Carolina Panthers, he reached a one-year deal, which is worth a reported $6.5 million. "Dowdle left for Carolina for under $3 million despite a very good 2024 season," Walder added. "In his stead, the Cowboys brought in Williams (who had minus-84 rush yards over expectation in 2024, per NFL Next Gen Stats) and Sanders (minus-44). Dallas also drafted Jaydon Blue in Round 5." The latest DraftKings promo code offer unlocks $200 in bonus bets for Cowboys-Giants, giving bettors funds to bet on any TNF market, including Dallas RB Rico Dowdle scoring the game's first joined the Cowboys in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina. During his rookie season, he took on seven attempts and four returns on special teams. In 2021, a hip injury during the preseason sidelined Dowdle for the entire year. He returned in 2022, making appearances in just five games. He didn't produce on offense. After another quiet run in 2023, Dowdle finally got a chance to take on feature back production in 2024. He started all but one of the 16 games he played, and took on 235 carries. Averaging 4.6 yards per carry, Dowdle rushed for 1,079 yards. He reached the endzone twice. In the receiving game, the ex-Cowboy caught 39 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns. The Cowboys went for backs with more consistent production over the years in free agency. In Javonte Williams, they landed a four-year veteran who averaged 191 carries per season with the Denver Broncos. Although Williams never cracked the 1K-yard mark, he totaled over 2,300 yards and 11 touchdowns, while catching 158 passes for 966 yards and five scores. Williams is younger and has fewer miles on him than Miles Sanders, but the Cowboys added a former Pro Bowler in the ex-Panthers running back. Sanders started his career as a Dallas rival, playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. He thrived in that system, averaging nearly 1,000 yards per season. Sanders' Carolina run wasn't as inspiring. In 27 games across two seasons, Sanders totaled 637 rushing yards for just three touchdowns. The Cowboys might not get the Philly version of Sanders, but they are confident the Sanders-Williams combo could help the offense find success on the ground. For the time being, there's skepticism behind that idea. While there are other moves that raised eyebrows, the loss of Dowdle to the open market headlined a "C" grade of an offseason, according to ESPN. Jerry Jones Hints At Cowboys Week 1 Opponent
FRISCO - Will the Dallas Cowboys play in the 2025 NFL Kickoff Game in the traditional opener against the defending Super Bowl champs, this time the Philadelphia Eagles? Will they play an international game, perhaps as the "road" team against the New York Jets in London? Or will their opponents again be old reliable, better known as the New York Giants? Advertisement The NFL is all about parity, but this is obscenely predictable. Despite a Week 1 visit to the lowly Cleveland Browns last season, the Cowboys have opened against the Giants seven times in the last 13 years. Are we about to see it again? In speaking to the Cowboys' new rookies last week at The Star, Jerry Jones appears to let it slip that his team will be lining up in Week 1 against the Giants. "We need you to be smart and come in here and dig and go for it and get it out so we can line up against the Giants Week ..." Jones said. "Can you do that?" Maybe Jones inserted the Giants simply as an NFC East rival to fire up the troops. Or, did he catch himself and stop short of saying "Week 1"? Advertisement The league loves Cowboys-Giants to begin the season - usually on a Sunday or Monday night. America's Team vs. America's biggest TV market always produces boffo ratings. Even during dreadful seasons, the teams played to a record TV audience last Thanksgiving in Arlington. Not that the Cowboys should complain if it's the Giants again. In the seven recent openers they are 6-1, including the memorable 40-0 shellacking in prime time at MetLife Stadium in 2023. By contrast, Dallas last opened against the Washington Commanders in 2010; the Eagles way back in 2000. The NFL full schedule will be released Wednesday at 7 p.m., but marquee games will begin trickling out Monday. Giants' Kayvon Thibodeaux on Cowboys, NFC East: 'They can all burn'
Retired New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck and running back Brandon Jacobs hated the Dallas Cowboys during their playing days and that disdain remains in retirement. There's never been any love lost between the two franchises, but with the Giants a shell of their former selves, they've been forced to suffer in silence over the past decade. No more, says linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux. After a week-long feud with Dez Bryant that has played out on social media, Thibodeaux appeared on radio row at Super Bowl LIX alongside teammate Bobby Okereke and laid into the Cowboys. '(Expletive) the Cowboys,' Thibodeaux told Zach Gelb. 'Much love to Dez. He's a media connoisseur and me, you know, I just like to roast people. When (the) offseason comes and I've got a little more free time, why not give the fans something to see?' The back-and-forth between Thibodeaux and Bryant began during the NFC Championship Game and continued over the course of a week-plus. At one point, Bryant suggested the 'rap' in person, which Okereke admits he'd like to see. 'Charity boxing match,' the veteran suggested. 'Coming soon.' Meanwhile, Thibodeaux acknowledged that the beef isn't over and likely won't be for some time. 'No, the beef is never over. As long as he represents the Cowboys the beef will never be over,' Thibodeaux said. 'There's no personal beef but all just Cowboys-Giants beef. There's just no room for a Cowboy.' Asked if Dallas is the team he hates most, Thibodeaux initially said 'no' but then went on to address the NFC East as a whole. 'I hate the Eagles more,' he said. 'Honestly, I hate them all equal. They can all burn. I hate them all equal.' Maybe, just maybe, Thibodeaux can help give the Giants back an edge they've been missing over the past 10-plus years. The players should hate the Cowboys. And the Eagles. And the Commanders. That's what NFC East football is all about.
