Cowes Sports secure victory thanks to 89th minute winner

Isle of Wight football team Cowes Sports secured an emphatic win against Tadley Calleva in the Hampshire Senior Cup on Tuesday, August 12. A steady start to the game saw chances at either end, with Cowes sustaining spells possession but opponents Tadley playing more long balls and counterattacking football. The visitors then broke the deadlock, capitalising on a misplaced Cowes pass which provided the opportunity for a cross for the mainland team's striker to head it across goal, making it 0-1. Going into half time behind, the Yachtsmen took Long off and brought on George Colson, before bringing on Scott McFarlane and Jimmy Mumford shortly into the second half. Tadley's short free kick from their box was to end in disaster, as Jordan Cook gained possession, passing to SCOTT MCFARLANE who levelled the match. A disallowed goal for the visitors set the tone, as Cowes felt momentum shifting away from them. However, it was to be the Yachtsmen's night, as Colson drew Tadley's centre-back out of position, passing to SCOTT MCFARLANE for his brace and to win Cowes the match. Ryan Hughes was awarded man of the match. The Island team progress into the next round of the Hampshire Senior Cup.

Will it be the Yachtsmen or old rivals Vics with the Midas touch in Gold Cup final?

THE most anticipated match of the local football calendar — the Isle of Wight Senior (Gold) Cup final — will be extra special when holders Cowes Sports take on old rivals East Cowes Vics tomorrow (Saturday). The match will be played at the Zilch Waste Stadium, commonly known as Westwood Park, the home of Cowes Sports. The Yachtsmen, who finished a comfortable 12th in the Wessex Premier, go into the game as favourites, with home advantage, as they look to make it a hat-trick after victories last year and in 2023. However, their opponents will be going into the match on a real high after securing promotion to the Premier from Wessex League Division 1 after winning the play-off final, away at Frimley Green, last Saturday. Vics skipper Liam Newbold has had an outstanding season. This season, Smith's side went one better — finishing fourth and dramatically winning the play-off finals and promotion. Vics will be hoping for one more minor miracle to beat a strong Cowes Sports side, led by Ian Potts and Mark Woodhouse. Not since the halcyon days of the 1980s have East Cowes Vics had any success in the competition. The last time they lifted "the world's most expensive trophy" was in 1989 — their seventh in an amazing ten-year period for the club. (Image: Robin Caddy) Since then, the Gold Cup has been largely dominated by Newport and Cowes Sports. Potts, who has been involved in every Gold Cup final since the 2012-13 season as a coach and assistant, is desperate to win it this year as a co-manager for the first time. "It's all positive at the club. I came in when we were bottom after the first ten games, but the lads have kicked on and been magnificent since, helping us finish this season in a good place," said Potts. "We will be approaching the final like every other game and we won't take Vics for granted. "Vics have come from nowhere really in recent times and have done really well. They're a good club, with good people and a good team. We'll respect them." After the team suffered from the loss of injured players towards the run-in, all is well now with a fully fit squad to choose from for the final, comprised of "a good mix of youth and experience". "We'll need to show nerve, passion and a bit of experience and, whoever wants it most on the day, normally wins it." Smith will be approaching the final in similar fashion and has an almost full squad to choose from, bar a few players cup-tied having played for other clubs in the competition earlier this season. Following Vics' heroics in the play-offs, Smith said he and the players are feeling confident, excited and looking forward to locking horns with Cowes. "I have a lot of faith in the group, but we're not delusional. Cowes are good side and, bookies may say they are the favourites, but we believe in ourselves and what we do," said Smith. "We go about things the right way and what we've achieved this season — so far — is a little bit of proof we do do things properly. "Cowes finished their season a few weeks ago, whereas we've been in full flow and feel comfortable playing in big games, in front of big crowds — which I'm sure there'll be for the final. Vics have not won the Gold Cup since 1989. Let's hope we ca make a little bit of history." Kick-off on Saturday will be at 3pm.

Cowes Sports beat Ventnor to book place in cup final

Cowes Sports booked their place in the final of the Isle of Wight Gold Cup with a disciplined victory over Ventnor. After an edgy start for both teams at Beatrice Avenue, in East Cowes, the first chance fell to the Yachtsmen's Jake Wright, who touched the ball past the post from a Charlie Marsek cross. Ventnor threatened from a free kick four minutes thereafter, and two minutes later, Cowes got the breakthrough. Scott McFarlane beat the offside trap and took the ball past the Ventnor stopper to slot into an empty net. Cowes Sports taking on Ventnor. Second half, Wright made way for Flynn Jackman and Cowes continued to control the game, an effort flashing over the Ventnor bar on 49 minutes. The first chance for the trailing Ventnor came on the 59-minute mark but stopper Ed Hatt denied them the leveller. Cowes Sports supporters at the game. A lack of end product remained an issue into the closing stages, but Cowes were seldom troubled at the other end, and the game ended 1-0.
