First new antibiotic in 50 years could help treat superbug labelled ‘urgent threat'

The drug, which targets one of the bacteria considered to pose the biggest threat to human health, has been hailed as an 'exciting' development in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Yesterday, Roche, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant, announced it will take zosurabalpin into the third and last phase of testing on humans. It is the first drug in five decades to show promise of tackling Acinetobacter baumannii, a pathogen which is described as a 'priority' by the World Health Organisation and an 'urgent threat' by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the US national public health agency. The drug-resistant bacteria disproportionately impact patients who are in the hospital, causing infections such as pneumonia and sepsis. It is estimated that between 40pc and 60pc of infected patients, many of whom are immunocompromised because of conditions such as cancer, die as a result of the bug. One of the reasons it is so difficult to treat is that it has a double-walled 'membrane' protecting it from attack, so it is difficult to get drugs into it and to keep them in, experts said. Zosurabalpin, which has been developed alongside researchers at Harvard University, targets the 'machine' which stops the outer membrane from forming properly. It works differently to all existing antibiotics and it is hoped that it could lay the foundations for future drugs. 'Our goal is to contribute new innovations to overcome antimicrobial resistance, one of the biggest infectious disease challenges to public health,' Michael Lobritz, global head infectious diseases at Roche, said. The phase-three trial, which it is hoped will start later this year or in early 2026, will look at around 400 patients with a carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii (Crab) infection who will either receive zosurabalpin or the current standard of care. It is hoped that the drug will be approved by the end of the decade. Pharmaceutical companies have in the past been unwilling to pursue new antibiotics because of a difficult market in which the drugs are used sparingly to try and avoid resistance. However, the UN has warned that if nothing is done to address the issue, drug-resistant diseases could cause 10 million deaths each year by 2050.

Mille-feuille, Skewers, and Parfaits: New Takes on Seafood Bringing Diners Back to the Table

Japan's kaisendon seafood bowls are known for overflowing toppings of morsels like tuna, salmon, sea urchin, and scallops over white rice. Unlike simple servings of nigirizushi , their popularity has traditionally based as much on their visual impact as their satisfying volume. In recent years, though, a new wave of kaisendon has appeared that is making waves for 'cuteness.' The icon of this new wave is not found at some seaside port but in the middle of Tokyo, in the underground floor of Daimaru Tokyo department store, where restaurant Sōsaku Sushidokoro Takimoto serves up Dream Pretty Mille-feuille (¥1,695; all prices in this article include consumption tax) kaisendon . The name might be a bit over the top, but the clear square dish packed with layers fresh seafood and rice truly feels like a 'treasure chest of the sea.' Pictured at bottom is the standard Dream Pretty Mille-feuille. At top left is the Zeitaku (Extravagant) Mille-feuille (¥2,100), with the Crab, Sea Urchin, and Roe Premium Mille-feuille (¥2,980) at right. (© ) This kaisendon comes in seven layers. The top layer has luxurious ingredients like abalone, salmon roe, and crab. Below that, standing in for the cake and custard of the namesake dessert are layers of vinegared rice interspersed with salmon, cod, mustard greens, cloud ear mushrooms, and more. The clear container lets you see the beautiful layering from every side, making it perfect for going viral on Instagram. The beautiful green layer weaves mustard greens and salmon. The bottom is lined with pickled, sliced ginger. (© ) Four Years as Top Seller Daimaru Tokyo's underground food floor Hoppetown connects to the Tokyo Station Yaesu exit. It forms a 60 meter long ' obent ō street' lined with shops drawing travelers looking for meals to take on their long-haul train trips. The floor as a whole sells over 1,000 different types of bentō boxes year-round. And for four years in a row, the champion of this station lunch battleground has been the Dream Pretty Mille-feuille. In 2024, over 60,000 were served. The shopfront is lined with mille-feuille sushi. (© Kawamoto Daigo) Takimoto's Daimaru Tokyo branch manager Deguchi Noboru explains the dish's popularity, saying with pride, 'The appearance is important, of course, but the rice and each topping is also properly seasoned, so I think it's also satisfying to eat. It's not just about the looks!' The shop started selling a pricier ¥2,100 Zeitaku Mille-feuille in 2010. Word of mouth helped popularity grow, but when the slightly smaller and more affordable Dream Pretty option appeared around five years ago, it became a huge hit with social media-savvy younger women. It is now a long-selling hit with repeat customers, so it is no mere fad. The Zeitaku Mille-feuille, with its heaping serving of herring roe, is also a steadfast seller. (© ) If the toppings overflow the dish, it makes it hard to eat on a moving train, explain Daimaru Tokyo PR staff. 'The dish lid can be used as a plate, so we recommend sharing out the toppings bit by bit. It's also a treat to mix up the mille-feuille layers and eat them together.' A pouch of soy sauce is attached, but the dish itself is well seasoned, so many people do not seem to need it. Making good use of the lid is key, whether for picking through toppings or holding soy sauce. (© ) From Sashimi Skewers to Sushi Parfaits Sushi Café Kanno, in the Tsukiji Outer Market, has the vibrant atmosphere of a trendy Shinjuku crepe shop. It is popular for serving up sets of salmon and tuna nigiri with a drink as a casual snack. One of Tsukiji's famous treats is the kushitama , a skewer of tamagoyaki rolled omelet, but this shop's flagship product is the Osashimi-gushi, a skewer of tuna and salmon selling for ¥500. Younger customers seem to love snapping pics of the colorful array. Sushi Café Kanno stands near the Monzeki-dōri entrance near the Tsukiji 4-chōme intersection. (© ) Osashimi-gushi is perfect for snacking and strolling. (© ) The shop's other recommendation is the Sushi Parfait, which comes in large (¥1,000) and small (¥500) versions. It has heart-shaped tamagoyaki over tuna, shrimp, salmon, and squid, and is sprinkled with roe. It's a hit with customers of all ages. This outlet is connected to the more orthodox shop Tsukiji Kanno, which serves sushi and kaisendon , so the quality of its seafood is never in doubt. Owner Kanno Miho says, 'We opened it to let international tourists and young people enjoy delicious seafood at reasonable prices, with no preconceptions.' Despite the dishes' compact sizes, they offer satisfaction going well beyond the low prices. She says, with a laugh, 'Profitability isn't what we're after here.' Osashimi-gushi and small Sushi Parfait, both ¥500, hold incredible value for the prices. (© ) Playful Mini-Sushi Merch From time to time at Tsukiji Outer Market, the unusual sushi shop Tsukiji 1935 shows off a huge crowd. They're not there to eat sushi, but to wear it. Yokaze Natsuko says she grew to love sushi so much, she had to turn it into accessories. The super miniature figures, smaller than a grain of rice, are used to decorate adorable items like necklaces, earrings, cellphone straps, and ballpoint pens. Nigirizushi earrings (¥2,200). (© ) Yokaze shares the joys of sushi with customers. (© ) There are gunkanmaki topped with ikura, and nigiri with tuna, salmon, shrimp or egg. All are colorful sushi staples. Customers who have just enjoyed a taste of fresh seafood seem drawn to stop by the shopfront, and many buy in bulk for fun Tsukiji souvenirs. Japan is seeing a trend in young people eating less seafood, but these kinds of highly visual tricks could well help bring some of them back to the fold. As new dishes add enjoyment for the eyes to enjoyment for the tongue, we could well see a resurgence in seafood consumption on the horizon. This popular sushi pen is a lovely accent for your shirt pocket (¥1,650). (© ) Small items like keychains run ¥1,100 each or five for ¥3,300, so bulk buying is common. The Hummer EV can navigate tight spaces with new King Crab rear steering

We weren't that impressed with the Hummer EV when it first came out — too big, too expensive, and crazy inefficient — but we did appreciate the novelty of the Crab Walk feature that let the massive truck rotate all four wheels to drive diagonally at low speeds. Our reviewer, Emme Hall, called it 'the weirdest sensation' and 'a good party trick.' Now, for the updated 2026 model year, the Hummer EV is getting even more crablike. The feature is now called 'King Crab,' and it allows for even more maneuverability than before. At low speeds, King Crab turns the rear wheels slightly faster than the front wheels, enabling the hulking Hummer to dart in between boulders or through a narrow copse of trees. GMC says it will ship the 2026 Hummer, both pickup and SUV, with the new feature. Existing owners will get it through an over-the-air software update later this year. The feature is the result of GMC's putting the call out to Hummer EV owners for 'epic' software update ideas. The automaker is also releasing a new limited carbon fiber edition of the truck and SUV with improved performance. With a new 24-module battery, the carbon fiber edition will accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. (The original model was able to sprint to that speed in three seconds.) The 2026 Hummer is now getting bidirectional charging capabilities, meaning it can send power out from its battery to another EV or even a home. And it comes with enhanced Super Cruise, allowing drivers to automatically change lanes when the vehicle's built-in map is being used.

James Murray accused of sending inappropriate messages to minor, allegations surface amid 'Impractical Jokers' fallout

James Murray, star of the comedy series 'Impractical Jokers,' is under scrutiny after a Reddit user accused him of exchanging inappropriate messages with her when she was a minor. The allegations emerged on March 27, 2025, just days after fellow comedian Joe Gatto faced separate sexual misconduct claims. The woman, using the handle @Pretend_Crab_9160, shared screenshots on the subreddit r/ImpracticalJokers, which have since been removed. The messages allegedly took place from February 2012 to January 2013, when the fan was 16 years old and Murray was 35. In one message, Murray reportedly wrote, "Haha, you're awesome… Once you turn 18, email me the same question and I'll be happy to answer." When the girl teased him about staying single until she came of age, he allegedly replied, "I'll do my best, promise." Oh Oh that's more accusations regarding Murr from the Impractical Jokers — Flutac 🇵🇸🇨🇩 (@Flutaccc) March 27, 2025 The user, who identified herself as Melyssa, claimed the two also exchanged messages about explicit topics, including "d*ldos," and even said "I love you" to each other. She wrote, "I've only shared what I feel comfortable with at the moment. Censored for obvious reasons. I was 16/17 when I first reached out to say I was a fan, that's when he offered meet and greet tickets." According to her post, the pair met in person in both London and New York. "We met up again a few times when he came to London. I would go to the parties and stay in his hotel," she stated. "He bought me lots of nice things, gave me money for private taxis, and things no adult would have been needing money for." One text from Murray allegedly read, "I will not say until me meet in person!!" She said she was uncomfortable with the secrecy and labeled it as "unfair" at the time In a particularly troubling recollection, she alleged that during a trip to New York City, Murray invited her to meet him in the middle of the night. "This all happened between the ages of 16-18. Please remember I was young, I thought this celebrity liked me and that it was the coolest thing ever at the time. I acknowledge my part in this, but people need to be aware so something worse doesn't happen." She added, "His management and team were there. He gave us all access passes, and at the afterparty, both of us minors were given shots all night." The screenshots also appear to show Murray thanking her for a video, calling her "cute," and arranging tickets to his show. "Haha, thanks! Anytime!" she responded to one of the compliments. Murray has yet to respond publicly to the allegations. Notably, one Redditor pointed out he had liked a TikTok video discussing Joe Gatto's case, further fueling online criticism.
