Legendary Metal Drummer Reveals a Broken Stick Led to Total Freak Injury
One of the biggest metal bands in recent history is Mastodon.
Since forming twenty-five years ago, the band (comprising of vocalist/bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, vocalist/drummer Brann Dailor, and former guitarist Brent Hinds) has brought down the thunder with landmark albums such as Leviathan, Blood Mountain, and Crack the Skye.
But sometimes, when you rock too hard, you get injured. Such was the case for Mastodon's drummer, who ended up bloody after a freak accident.
'You ever get a giant splinter in your head?' asked Mastodon on May 28 when sharing a video of Dailor explaining what happened.
'A stick broke on a cymbal in the middle of 'More Than I Can Chew,'' the drummer said, referring to a song from their most recent album, Hushed and Grim.
'It broke in this perfect fashion where it created a little shard,' he explained. Cue a close-up of the 'shard' that is on his head.
'The pointy part of it stuck in my forehead [and] it was just dangling there,' he said. 'So while I was singing and playing, I got up and batted it out, so I started bleeding a little bit.'
Fans had a pretty much the same reaction in the comments section: 'This is just about as metal as it gets.'
'He looked like Alice Cooper with this blood coming down his face,' said one fan, who thought the blood mimicked the shock rocker's iconic makeup.
Others were concerned over how close the splinter got to his eye. '[That] could have been really bad,' said one fan. 'Thank god it wasn't in your eye,' said another.
Mastodon is currently wrapping up its tour with Coheed and Cambria and Periphery. The band is currently in need of a new guitarist after Brent Hinds, who co-founded the group in 2000, left the band in March.
