Airdrie announce exit of 'consistently reliable' defender
Craig Watson has parted ways with the Diamonds after a four-year spell Airdrie have announced Craig Watson has left the club after four years with the Monklands men. The Diamonds defender helped the club to Championship survival this past season and was also part of the League One promotion-winning squad in 2023. A former Hamilton Accies and East Fife player, the 30-year-old is now on the lookout for a new club. A club statement read: "After four years and over 150 appearances for the Diamonds, Craig Watson is moving on with our thanks and best wishes. "Defender Craig joined from East Fife in May of 2021, having caught the eye of then boss Ian Murray with a number of solid displays against his side. "Featuring regularly over four seasons in central defence and the right full-back role, the athletic former Hamilton man impressed the Airdrie faithful with his no-nonsense defending and ability on the ball. "'Janny' also showed an eye for goal, finding the net 11 times over his 153 appearances – with a couple of Goal of the Season contenders in the shape of outstanding strikes against Montrose and Alloa Athletic. "As a model professional, a positive influence in the dressing room, and a consistently reliable squad member during a successful period for the club, we wish Craig the very best of luck with whatever comes next in his football career. He will always be welcomed with open arms at the club he served with such distinction. All the best, Janny!"

Airdrie staying in the Championship would mean everything, says star
Craig Watson reckons Airdrie have to put everything they have into the play-off Airdrie star Craig Watson says staying in the Championship via the play-offs would mean everything to the club after a turbulent season. And he says the Diamonds can't feel sorry for a Hamilton Accies side that were relegated after being docked 15 points by the SPFL for various offences, saving Airdrie from dropping into League One. Airdrie face a semi-final first leg away on Tuesday and home on Saturday against Stenhousemuir, with the winner facing either Cove Rangers or Queen of the South in the final. Watson says Airdrie have to put everything they have into staying up. When asked what it would mean to stay in the Championship, Watson said: 'I think it means everything for the club, it's huge. 'It's got huge implications on and off the pitch, depending on what league you're in, so we'll be doing everything we can, covering everything on and off the pitch, to make sure that's the case. 'We're looking at it as a positive that we're in the play-off, 100 per cent. It's a lifeline that we've been gifted, outwith our control. 'We know a bit about the teams we might play. In the footballing community you talk to players in other squads. A couple of seasons ago we were playing against these teams. 'Because we've been promoted out of that league, we know how much it means to get out, and we want to stay out of it. 'We want to be positive, aggressive, take the game to them, and definitely not taking anything for granted.' Former Accies defender Watson added: 'It's a shame for Hamilton, for the players and manager that have been working hard all season – but that's football. 'We cant feel bad for them, we've got to concentrate on ourselves. We've been blessed with this opportunity. 'We're in the position that we were in simply because we weren't good enough for the first six months of the season, so we've now got two – potentially four – massive opportunities to right our wrongs.'

Airdrie anger in 'meaningless' Ayr clash shows how much we want survival, says star
Craig Watson says there was an angry exchange at half-time of Friday's defeat Craig Watson says angry words exchanged at half-time in a 'meaningless' game show how much passion Airdrie have to stay in the Championship. Trailing to a Ben Dempsey goal just before half-time, Airdrie ultimately succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Ayr United in their league finale, a game that had nothing riding on it at all. Frankly, it would have been stupid for the Diamonds to go hell for leather against Scott Brown's side, given that they have a relegation play-off semi-final to play – likely against Alloa – on Tuesday and Saturday. But stand-in skipper Watson says their reaction to going a goal down shows how much they want to succeed. The defender said: 'I'm ultimately disappointed with the result, but there were phases in that game, we're pleased with how we got in behind and worked our way in the first half. 'We were so disappointed with how they got their goal, it was so soft. 'Obviously being biased, I would say we were the stronger of the two, and had the better chances in the first half, so to concede that a couple of minutes before half-time was a sickener. 'Words were exchanged at half-time, which is good. It shows that even though on paper it was a meaningless game, there are demands from everywhere, especially with two or four potentially massive games coming up. 'It's all about gaining that momentum, looking at the positives from Friday night. Getting that shape, getting everyone involved, getting minutes in the legs – including myself, I've not had as many as I would've liked in recent times – so it was good to get back out there and get the rust off! 'It's two massive games and we were focused on keeping boys, who have been playing very regularly, fresh and getting boys moving that haven't been getting the game-time, and their sharpness up, so that if and when everyone's called upon, everybody's ready.' Watson was skipper, with Adam Frizzell rested, and said: 'It was good. With Frizz having a bit of a rest, it's always good to take that responsibility on and being the senior player in the squad, I'll take that on anyway. 'I try to help the young players as much as I can through the season, pass on what I've gone through and learned through my career. 'It's nice to get a bit of recognition but that was just a side-note of today.'
