Wow, James Gunn Really Hated Those ‘Peacemaker' Cameos in the Old DCU

The second season of Peacemaker, starring WWE champion and actor John Cena, is just around the corner. With it comes a lot of questions about how the anti-hero will fit into both the old and new DC canon, given his limbo status, which has even led DC Studios head James Gunn to voice his frustration. Speaking with Den of Geek ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, Gunn reiterated that the second season of Peacemaker will address all the continuity confusion questions related to DC's past and present. 'There are certain things from the old universe that we refer to in Peacemaker season 2, but until then, they're not canon,' Gunn told Den of Geek. 'Almost everything from season 1 is canon, but season 2 will explain everything that is or is not canon.' While on the press tour for DC Studios animated series, Creature Commandos, Gunn made his sentiments on canon clear: that it doesn't really matter matter. More precisely, in an interview with IGN, Gunn said canon has become more critical post the height of the Marvel Cinematic Universe than he thinks it should be, and Gunn hopes his vision under DC will buck that trend and put strong scripts at the forefront. 'One of the weird things to me is none of this is real,' Gunn told IGN. 'It may be alarming to people, but none of it is real.' Yet, that hasn't stopped Gunn from joining in on DC fans' tepid headache over what is and isn't canon when it comes to Cena's Peacemaker. Divorced from season 1's finale, which saw the Justice League show up late to the cataclysmic final battle but just in time for one last Aquaman jab for the road, the series has become cameo fodder in other DC projects. Key among them being Peacemaker's Harcourt and Economos showing up in Shazam: Fury of the Gods to headhunt Billy Batson into the Justice Society, as well as an appearance in Dwayne Johnson's vanity project, Black Adam, which added to the confusion, particularly with its own post-credits scene featuring a cameo by Henry Cavill's Superman. 'They're not canon! I hate it!' Gunn said. As GamesRadar+ notes, Gunn had 'no idea' why the pair of characters would be scouted for the Justice Society. Given what we've seen from the official teaser trailer for Peacemaker season 2 and the vigilante's own cameo in Superman, the HBO Max series will attempt to dispense with its vestiges of old DC continuity through the concept of pocket universes. Given that the final moments of Peacemaker's teaser trailer saw him draw a gun on his alternate universe doppelganger, the tidying up of DC canon might take Kylo Ren's 'let the past die' monologue to heart. Either that or therapy in Gunn's DC universe is way more drastic than our own. Peacemaker season 2 premieres on HBO Max on August 21. Want more io9 news? The new 'Superman' is a hit. So what's coming next in the DC universe?

James Gunn had a very specific plan for his audience when launching the interconnected new DC universe with 'Superman': The less they know at first, the better. 'I wanted it to feel like what I felt like as a kid reading comic books, like I didn't know anything about these guys,' says the 'Superman' director and co-head of DC Studios with Peter Safran. 'I'm seeing Superman and his friends with a guy with a magic ring and a bald guy that can transform his body into stuff and all these different people. There were robots and flying dogs and kaiju and all this sorcery and science that seemed like sorcery. And I loved just bringing that magical world to the screen.' Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox While the new DCU technically started last year with the animated series 'Creature Commandos,' 'Superman' (in theaters now) truly launched the rebooted universe. The latest take on the superhero stars David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as arch nemesis Lex Luthor, and a supporting cast of characters who'll no doubt show up in other TV shows and movies down the line. For example, Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern and member of the Justice Gang in 'Superman,' will also play a role in the upcoming HBO Max series 'Lanterns.' Now that 'Superman' is a runaway hit after its big first weekend ($122 million at the domestic box office), here's a rundown of what's to come in the first 'chapter' of Gunn's DCU, labeled 'Gods and Monsters.' John Cena returns as Peacemaker this summer Played by John Cena, the antiheroic Peacemaker first appeared in Gunn's 2021 movie 'The Suicide Squad' and then was seen in the 2022 'Peacemaker' TV series. Season 2 of the HBO Max show premieres Aug. 21 and features not only Cena's character but also Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), a military man from 'Creature Commandos' whose son was killed by Peacemaker. So there's probably revenge on his mind. The 'Peacemaker' trailer also teased an appearance from the Justice Gang, a supergroup featuring Gardner, Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) that appeared in 'Superman" and is bankrolled by billionaire Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). Expect more intel to come out of the show's Comic-Con panel on July 25. Milly Alcock flies as 'Supergirl' in 2026 One of the bigger cameos in 'Superman' was Milly Alcock's first appearance as Supes' cousin Kara, who drops by somewhat inebriated to pick up her pup Krypto. She will be back on the big screen next summer in 'Supergirl' (in theaters June 26, 2026), a cosmic adventure/revenge quest that will mark Jason Momoa's debut as the fan-favorite alien bounty hunter Lobo. The film is based on the comic book 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,' and Alcock matched Gunn's vision for a 'pixie-ish, punk rock' version of the character, he tells USA TODAY. 'It's like this sort of drunken sorority girl Supergirl who's just also really tough. And it's the Supergirl that I always wanted to see that I never knew I wanted to see.' 'Lanterns' kicks off a new slate of DC TV shows Expected to premiere on HBO early next year, 'Lanterns' is a eight-episode series that will feature members of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps investigating a murder on Earth. Kyle Chandler plays Green Lantern veteran Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre is rookie John Stewart, and Fillion will reprise his role as the brash Guy Gardner. Other shows in development include 'Waller,' a series with Viola Davis back as Suicide Squad head Amanda Waller, and 'Paradise Lost,' a drama set on the Amazons' island of Themyscira before Wonder Woman's birth. The comedy 'Booster Gold' will feature the time-traveling hero from the future, and also in the works is a 'Blue Beetle' animated series (with Xolo Maridueña reprising his 2023 movie role) and a second season of 'Creature Commandos.' More DC movies are on the way – maybe 'Superman 2'? 'Clayface,' a horror movie centered on the Batman villain, has a release date (Sept. 11, 2026), a director ('Speak No Evil' filmmaker James Watkins) and a star (Tom Rhys Harries). And if you've got a Dark Knight baddie, you need a Dark Knight, though Gunn hasn't cast a Caped Crusader yet for 'The Brave and the Bold.' That will feature Batman (one different from Robert Pattinson's take on the character in 'The Batman' world) as well as son/sidekick Damian Wayne (aka Robin). The DC braintrust also is in need of a new Wonder Woman for her film, one of many in development including 'The Authority,' Luca Guadagnino's 'Sgt. Rock' and James Mangold's 'Swamp Thing.' But don't forget the Man of Steel: David Corenswet has said he's already signed on for another movie, a no-brainer considering the enthusiastic reception for the new movie.

Superman ending explained: Post-credit clues, Supergirl reveal and Justice Gang setup

Superman released in theatres on July 11, officially kickstarting James Gunn's new DC Universe. While Creature Commandos came first on the release schedule, this is the first full-blown live-action film of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. With David Corenswet taking on the cape, this reboot was under huge pressure to get things right after the DCEU ended in 2023. The story is packed. Superman faces off against Lex Luthor, meets fellow heroes, protects Metropolis, and finds out shocking truths about his parents. But most importantly, it quietly sets up the wider DCU without being too loud about it. Here's how the movie ends, what those mid- and post-credit scenes really mean, and where things go from here. Lex Luthor's masterplan backfires Lex Luthor secretly teams up with Boravia's corrupt president. He gives them weapons in exchange for a deal to split the neighbouring country, Jarhanpur, after a full invasion. But it's all a cover. Lex doesn't care about politics; he wants to destroy Superman. It took damn near 50 years but we finally got a good Lex Luthor in a Superman movie To trap him, he uses pocket universe tech that he earlier used to imprison 'Supes'. This dimension begins to tear Metropolis apart, creating a growing rift. Superman wants to fly off and stop Boravia, but Mister Terrific warns him that the rift could soon wipe out the whole world. Lex sends the Engineer and a masked warrior named Ultraman after Superman. After a brutal fight, it's revealed Ultraman is a clone of Superman, created from a single strand of hair. They battle near a black hole created by the rift. Superman wins by knocking his clone into the void, and Terrific closes the rift just in time. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen expose Lex Luthor Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, flying above the chaos, piece together the story. With help from Eve Tesmacher, who secretly sends them photos, they find proof that Lex was behind the invasion plan. His deal with Boravia and his plan to kill Superman are made public. Superman storms Lex's flying office and stops him from fleeing. With his lies exposed and his allies defeated, Lex is arrested and taken to Belle Reve Prison. Justice Gang saves Jarhanpur JAMES GUNN on the JUSTICE GANG:"They're good. They just are not saintly.'Via @EW While Superman handles Metropolis, the Justice Gang: Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific team up with Metamorpho to protect Jarhanpur. They stop Boravia's army. Hawkgirl ends the fight in brutal style by dropping the Boravian president from the sky. Metamorpho, meanwhile, joins the Justice Gang. Supergirl introduced in the DCU The movie ends with Superman returning to the Fortress of Solitude. His Superman Robot helpers are just being repaired when someone crashes through the wall, it's Supergirl (played by Milly Alcock). Milly Alcock's Supergirl is gonna be Generational 🔥 She's drunk, confused, and looking for her dog. That dog turns out to be Krypto, who's been with Superman all along. Kara jokes with Clark, plays rough with Krypto, and slurs him for looking after her pet. Then she flies off again. Her outfit and attitude are straight from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, which her upcoming movie is based on. Mid-credit scene: Moonlight moment between Superman and Krypto The first credits roll using the classic Superman font, backed by the song 'Punkrocker' by Teddybears and Iggy Pop. Then we see Superman and Krypto sitting side by side on the moon, looking down at Earth. It's a quiet tribute to All-Star Superman (2011) animated film and also one of the film's posters. Post-credit scene: Mr. Terrific annoyed In the second scene, Superman and Mister Terrific look at a rebuilt Metropolis building that seems a bit uneven. Superman says, 'It's just a little off,' and Terrific snaps. 'What do you want me to do!? Take it apart and rebuild it!?' They argue briefly, with Superman awkwardly apologising. Terrific storms off. It's a light scene, but it adds personality to the new DCU, more bonding than setup. What does it mean for the DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) James Gunn didn't end Superman with a big multiverse twist or surprise villain. Instead, the film completes a full arc, sets up new heroes, and hints at future stories. We meet the Justice Gang. We meet Supergirl. And we get a glimpse of how different this new DC Universe might be. The quiet confidence in these final scenes says one thing clearly: the DCU is just getting started.

James Gunn discusses Superman film, DCU future plans, and online rumors

James Gunn, writer-director of the upcoming Superman and co-head of DC Studios, is shaping the future of the DC Universe while offering a rare level of transparency along the way. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn discussed everything from his hands-on role in launching DC's new chapter to addressing internet rumors and social media speculation. Gunn's rebooted Superman, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, is set to debut July 11 as the inaugural film in DC's "Gods and Monsters" phase. He emphasized that while this is the first major step, it's not merely a proof-of-concept film—he's simply trying to tell the best Superman story he can. Still, Superman is "very important" to the overarching DCU story, unlike Creature Commandos, which he sees more as a standalone entry. While Gunn actively engages with fans on social media, he admits to scaling back due to the overwhelming spread of misinformation. 'Some of these false stories hurt people—actors or directors we're talking to—so I step in when it matters,' he said. This public engagement also reflects how closely Gunn monitors fan expectations while steering the DCU's future. He clarified that although he's less active online, he still works hard to maintain transparency and protect those involved in projects. Gunn also touched on upcoming projects, including Lanterns, Peacemaker Season 2, and Supergirl, while confirming Clayface is in development with filmmaker Mike Flanagan. He also teased a personal favorite DC project that has yet to be announced. As for Elseworlds titles like The Batman Part II, Gunn confirmed those are moving forward but reiterated the studio's focus on unifying the DCU with clear creative oversight. With Superman nearing release and other titles in production, Gunn says the challenge lies in balancing macro storytelling with focused creative work. 'If I try to do everything, it's too little of any one thing,' he said. For now, the future of the DCU seems to be in capable hands—grounded in fan connection and driven by storytelling.

James Gunn Talks Supergirl, Lobo, Constantine, and Reveals He's Not a Kyle Rayner Guy — GeekTyrant

James Gunn has got a long road ahead of him as he builds up the DC Universe, and he's had heavy involvement with Creature Commandos , which set things in motion, and Superman and Peacemaker Season 2, which are right around the corner, but we'll start to see that universe widen, with other storytellers stepping into the spotlight. That includes Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow , directed by Cruella and I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie. Gunn recently opened up in a new DC Showcase interview about the state of the movie, the vibe of its characters, and how Jason Momoa's Lobo brings it all together. "Craig is such a joy to work with. I was really excited to get to work with him, and he's been just a dream in terms of for his you have an idea that you believe, you really fight for it." As for the casting of Milly Alcock, that came before Gillespie boarded the project. According to Gunn, she was always his top pick for Kara Zor-El. "I wanted her to be this little pixie-ish, but very attitudinal character. [Milly] was the first person I brought up." Gillespie also pushed for a more terrifying take on Krem of the Yellow Hills, the villain from the Woman of Tomorrow comic. Gunn teased that Krem, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, will be a real standout. "Dude, wait till you see how scary he is in the movie," Gunn said. He called Schoenaerts "scary," "creepy," and "cool" in the role. But the real curveball is Lobo. Momoa is swapping his Aquaman trident for a space bike, playing the wild, intergalactic bounty hunter. And according to Gunn, he's essential to making Supergirl work as a movie. "The comic is very much a bunch of little stories. We needed to create one throughline, one three-act story, so Lobo helps us to do that." Elsewhere in the interview, one of the hosts shared his favorite DC characters with Gunn, which include Kyle Rayner, John Constantine, and Mister Miracle. The latter is getting his own animated series, and while Gunn's a fan of Hellblazer, he's less keen on Kyle. "I like all three of those characters. The second two, I'm a way bigger fan of. I've been online enough to know everyone has their favorite Green Lantern. I'm a Guy guy, right?" He went on to talk about why Constantine, in particular, resonates with him. "Constantine, I'm actually a pretty huge fan of. I read every Hellblazer comic as it was coming out. He's a great character, and I like that approach to magic where it's not too overwhelming and he's too powerful." As for Kyle Rayner? Don't hold your breath. Gunn's focus seems to be on Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and, of course, Guy Gardner.
