Maidie Music House opens to support Black artists in Nova Scotia
Katrina Lopes chats about creating Maidie Music House, an artist development company rooted in Black Nova Scotian heritage and culture. Maidie Music House, a Halifax-based artist development company, is opening its doors Friday. 'Aug. 1, on Emancipation Day, which was intentional because its symbolic of liberating ourselves from these systems that were never built for us,' veteran music executive, Katrina Lopes told CTV Morning Live. 'That's what Maidie Music House is about.' The company, founded by Lopes, looks to support and promote Black artists across Nova Scotia. 'Building something that's for us, by us, that understands what our needs are because there has been no infrastructure here,' Lopes said. Maidie Music House hopes to close the gap for Black artists in the province and help them develop their careers. 'The biggest gap has been artists development and performance couching,' Lopes said. To celebrate the opening of the music company, a concert is being held as part of the Crescendo Fest. The audience can expect performances from Reeny, Zamani, Haliey Smith and Jody Upshaw.
